“Nthambo Tree Camp”
Reviewed 30 August 2013

We had a wonderful time at Nthambo in August 2013. The accommodation was superb and had everything we needed, and it was great to stay in an elevated wooden "chalet" with views over the bush that surrounded us. From the pickup in an open Land Rover from the airport, we spotted game along our 45 min drive to the lodge. Our tracker Isaac, was extremely knowledgeable. Our Ranger, Kevin, was so helpful and informative, and they both went the extra mile to find us thrilling sightings of Elephants, Cheetah, a Pride of Lions with two 3 month old cubs, to name only a few. We enjoyed our few days there so much that we will certainly return. Everyone was friendly and helpful and the ambiance around the campfire and dinner table was relaxing and chilled. It was a very special experience.

This place is wonderful! A truley great experience. We arrived early afternoon, had lunch then off to our 1st game drive. We had a great show from one of the elephants and saw many other animals in the bush, lions, giraffe, buffalo and more. Arriving back at camp we were met by Harvey then had great conversation by the boma while listening to the lions calling in the wilderness. Then a nice dinner and off to the tent where a elephant came to visit us before we went to bed. Each day was a new experience. Kevin and Enoch as well as Harvey and Isaac were fantastic at finding the animals. Yolandi and the camp staff did a great job. Everyday we felt like we were at home in Africa. A truley unique experience!

Room Tip: Ask for one where the elepants will pay you a visit.

My wife and I spent 5 wonderful days at nThambo. This was our first trip to South Africa and we were celebrating our 27th wedding anniversary and wanted a different holiday experience. And we did. The Hoedspruit airport pick-up by Enoch went smoothly and we were at the camp within 45 minutes. As we approached the camp we saw two giraffes and there was a troop of baboons at the camp itself almost welcoming us! Check-in was quick and were shown to our tented camp on stilts! We were the only guests for two nights and had the entire place all to ourselves.

The meals were excellent home cooked fare. I was actually looking forward to each meal after an exciting day of game drives. Hospitality was excellent and we felt like family rather than guests. Credit goes to Kevin and Enoch who accompanied us on the game drives every day and showed us the Big Five. Kevin shared his extensive knowledge of the bushveldt and animals which made the game drives enjoyable. You have uninterrupted views from the balcony and I always enjoy just looking out over the bushland.

The hot water bottles in bed were a really nice touch during the winter evenings. The rustic setting was perfect and the beds were really comfy. Most nights we could hear animal noises nearby which was exciting. Occasionally, we spotted elephants, hyenas, honey badgers and warthogs wandering around the camp. Lots of birds around. Gawie and/or Yolandi were always on hand to welcome us back with a nice drink at the end of a drive and to ensure that things went well.

Overall, a really enjoyable stay. Excellent hospitality, delicious meals, enjoyable game drives, wonderful atmosphere in a tented safari camp on stilts! Highly recommended for those who want a safari holiday with a difference.

Room Tip: Our villa was two villas away from the lodge. If you want more privacy please ask for the villas fur...

"Ditto" to everything that has been written about the friendly, personable and very informational , knowledgeable guides, the home cooked and varied plentiful foods, the breakfast and afternoon cocktails while in the bush, the comfort of the rustic tree houses and lodge. (The hot water bottle placed under our covers warming the sheets was an unexpected pleasure.) And add to all of this, a superb safari experience! Gawrie, Kevin and Yilandi thank you again for such an incredible experience and for treating my son and me like family. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at nThambo. and if only I could remember 1/10 of the information you imparted to us I'd be quite knowledgeable. Just to show off a bit: collective noun for zebras is a dazzle.

Room Tip: You can't go wrong unless its booked up.

Our host, Harvey, made us feel so welcome to this small, interesting camp. The "tree houses" are beautiful, and the staff are happy to open up the tent walls, if you would like, so that you can sleep out in the open with just mosquito netting. Harvey's extraordinary knowledge of nature and specifically of the animals in his area, and his willingness to share that knowledge, was a highlight of our trip to South Africa. I can't recommend Tree Camp more highly.

Room Tip: There are only 5 guest rooms, and they seem identical to me.

I was awakened a little after midnight by rustling and chewing. Laid there, trying to envision what might be making that particular sound. Got up and looked out the back window and there was an elephant, eating the tree that was up next to my tent! The scary part was how close it was to my car, which was parked just next to it. They do pull down trees, you know.. By the time I got my camera it had moved across the driveway to another tree but the field full of impalas in front of the tent photographed quite nicely.
OK, calling this a 'tent' is a little misleading. Accommodations at nThambo are in canvas suites with thatched roofs - on a platform, a full story above the ground. Bathroom inside at the rear, a big deck in the front, lighting inside by an electric system that uses solar power. I cannot imagine a more natural place to spend the night - in real comfort - in the bush. I felt a certain charm to the tents, the main lodge, even the folks in charge. Yolandi and Gawrie Grobler are two experienced Rangers who operate nThambo. Yolandi was one of the first female Rangers in South Africa and she now manages the lodge while Gawrie guides the guests. But they add a level of energy and expertise to the experience far beyond that simple statement. Moments to remember include the surprise breakfast in the bush at the end of a morning game drive. Gawrie's great stories on the game drives. I rate this one of the true values in safari travel. I Plan to be back in October. Though I may never catch up with the couple from London who were there also; this was their tenth stay at nThambo!

Room Tip: I didn't see that any one suite was better than the others.

The accommodation was simple, tasteful with all you need for a comfortable bush outing. The wifi is a bonus. The food was hearty, varied and delicious. Best of all it is in a small, intimate setting. Our ranger's enthusiasm for the bush was infectious and our two trackers were simply unbelievable. They all led us to thrilling encounters with the wildlife and freely shared their knowledge and love for the bush. Outstanding.
