We visited the Thorneybusg Safari Lodge in January 2017, for a weeks safari. This turned out to be an exceptional experience, well beyond our wildest dreams. Two safari drives each day with Clement and Ishmael allowed us to view not only the big five but, hundreds of animals in their own habitat. Both Clement and Ishmael were excellent, going out of their way to ensure that our holiday was mind blowing. Staff were exceptional, Elvis deserving of special praise for the way that he looked after us at Breakfast and Dinner.

Room tip: All accommodation in in private suites solely for each couple.

What a place. This lodge was unbelievable. The rooms were clean and very spacious and luxurious. We had 6 game drives over 3 days, each morning and evening. Our guide Malcolm was wonderful, We managed to see the 'Big 5' and even got up close to a Leopard eating her kill. The food at this lodge was exceptional, the portions were huge. BEWARE though of the wandering hippo's during the night, what a wonderful sight!!!!

We stayed for two nights after two nights at neighbouring Kapama reserve.

Although the trucks can seat 9 people, it seems that as much as possible they try to keep numbers to 6. On our first night we were in with a family of 4 and on our second night it was just the two of us. Taking to others in the lodge, leopard sightings seem fairly common although unfortunately we didn't see one. Our guide and tracker however made every effort to track one down for us and it felt like we were very close. It was fascinating to watch!

The location of the lodge is stunning with a huge deck over looking a dried out River bed. The camp is unfenced so after your night time drive you need to be escorted to your room and back to dinner which we found a little restrictive.

Dinner moves around which gives a nice experience. We had a buffet in the Boma with our group plus an a la carte meal just the two of us.

While we were there, most of the rooms were occupied by a large American tour group and apparently the day we checked out, the who place was booked out by a group. I think the fact that couples / families were in the minority during our stay did have a slightly negative impact on the atmosphere.

Overall though we had an enjoyable stay and given that leopards are seen here fairly often, who knows, we might be back to complete the big 5!!

I am sharing a personal viewpoint about the Thornybush Collection as a whole. I have had the pleasure and privilege to visit 6 of the lodges over the past few years. Service excellence seems to be paramount wherever I've been. I haven't had an instance where the service was not exceptional. The game drives are so interesting both in terms of the variety of animals but also because the rangers are more than happy to share their knowledge and one gets more intimate with nature
