“Fantastic experience”
Reviewed 18 February 2014 via mobile

We just came back from South Africa , safari at this park and lodge was an absolute highlight of the holidays. Beautiful cabins, great staff, fantastic hosts and of course trackers. We actually saw all Big Five in one day! There was absolutely nothing to complain about, all was perfect!

What an amazing 3 days we had here! 5 star service, rooms with indoor and outdoor showers, swimming pool, fireplace, and of course Braai and puddings every night with our famous chef :)

We saw the following animals during game drives (safari):

- Lion
- Rhino, black and white
- Elephant
- Buffalo
- Leopard
- Hippo
- Crocodile
- Monkey
- Baboons
- Porcupine
- Wildebeest
- Impala
- Shongololo - warm with thousand feet
- Inyala
- Kiddo
- Turtles
- Chameleon
- Waterbuck
- Civet
- Snakes
- Warthog
- Tree squirrel
- Giraffe

Birds: awel, kingfisher, hornbill, egyptian geese, eagles, vulture, ground hornbill...

We also saw various kinds of spiders...

Some of us had the opportunity to take outdoor shower at the lodge with Inyala hanging around!

The last game drive was very special. We got to see all big 5 in one go, especially the last one remaining which was the leopard - the most difficult to find.

At the end, we felt that the bush wanted us to stay! First we were blocked by elephants playing on the road, then a whole herd of buffalos.

As part of the game drive experience, we had nice morning tea and sundowners with picnic table, table cloth, drinks, and snacks. We were accompanied by various animals at these stops including giraffes, elephants, and warthogs.

Thanks to the team at Waterbuck Game Lodge for making it such a memorable experience. I will definitely come back again.

We stayed at the lodge for a week with 6 friends - a great experience with sightings of all big 5 and many smaller mammals and birds including the rare wild dogs lodderick and Gareth were a great pair seeing things we had missed . The food was excellent and we all left sadder but heavier . The lodges were very comfortable , private from each other , but with a natural communal area around the pool and bar

Room Tip: Room 4 with a view of the dam - and there's no fitness centre (thank goodness)

We stayed at Waterbuck for 4 nights in December and loved everything about it.

Game drives - Gareth and Loderick do a fantastic job. Although there are other lodges in the reserve, you hardly ever see the other vehicles and really feel like you're out there on your own (in comparison, at another lodge I saw other jeeps all the time which made it feel a bit more like a zoo). They really track the animals and let you know what they're doing, which adds to the fun. It's clear that they both not only want to give the guests a great experience, but also appreciate the wildlife themselves. We saw the 'Big 5' and much more.

The staff - everyone there is incredibly welcoming, friendly, and great at their jobs. Tarryn and Gareth are really nice hosts and fun to be around, and cheerfully answered my million questions about living in the bush.

The food - so so so so good. Antoinette and her colleagues are amazing.

Overall I highly recommend Waterbuck. I stayed 2 nights at another nearby lodge which was also a terrific experience, but if I get the chance to go back to one, I'd choose Waterbuck. The other felt more like a fancy hotel experience, whereas Waterbuck feels like being at really gorgeous, amazing home of a friend.

Waterbuck Lodge was an amazing place to take in the South African bush area. From the hospitality to the food to the game drives, all of it was top notch. Gareth and Tarryn were great hosts, made us feel very much at home and were great company to be around. Loderick and Gareth do a great job tracking any animal you might want to see and make sure they do everything they can to get you the view/shot you're looking for.

The food Antoinette and her staff put together is absolutely some of the best food we have ever eaten. From the chicken and waffles for breakfast to the Kingklip for dinner, and everything in between, it was all amazing.

Couldn't say enough great things about Waterbuck and the staff there. They make the experience what it is.

This was an experience of a lifetime for us...and did not disappoint. In fact from the friendliness of the staff, to the excitement of each game drive, and the knowledge and skill of Hannes and Lodrick, it was perfect. We saw so much in a week and were never rushed. And of course I should mention Antoinette's amazing food washed down with delicious SA wines. THANKYOU to the whole team.

I will never forget eating under the stars down by the dam. Pure magic. The staff really want to make your holiday whatever you want it to be. We saw not just the big five but learnt so much about how the whole environment is interdependent from the dung beetle to the lion and everything in between. The lodges are the ultimate in luxury and the food is never less than utterly delicious. Hannes`s enthusiasm and knowledge along with Anita`s hospitality make this the best African safari you could ever have.

Room Tip: No tip needed - every lodge is equally wonderful!
