Such an amazing trip that there are no adequate words to express The ranger and tracker were beyond well versed, I felt incredibly comfortable and happy, and was lulled to sleep by the lions roaring. The food was amazing, the lodge was beautiful and the game drives were out of this world! I highly recommend this place!

Like everyone else I only have great tyings to say. Wayne and Herman were our Ranger and Tracker and were both knowledgable and great fun. Rooms were great as was food. Only 8 people at a time made it feel very personal.

We came with teen grandson. The attention he got from staff was"icing on the cake". The animal sightings were superb and the natural history information made the safari so memorable for him as well as for us. The presidential suite was jaw-dropping...really luxorious and rejuvenating after game drives. Meals and staff friendliness and competence were outstanding also. Altogether a great experience. We highly recommend Shumbala...a place where lions and happy tourists sleep.

This is my second visit to Shumbalala, - but not my last. Accommodations are spectacular, the food is outstanding, and the kindness, friendliness and service of the management is admirable. We felt a sincere welcome, safe and comfortable during the entire stay. We traced and observed literally every major animal in South Africa in 4 days. Our tracker and ranger were exceptionally knowledgeable, answered all our questions and assisted our experience in every possible way.
Shumbalala (where the lions sleep) meets every possible expectation!

This was our first safari and our first stop. Couldn't have asked for more. We felt secure on all the day trips and saw all the large animals, including elephants, African buffalo, giraffes, lions, cheetahs, leopards and countless species of birds. A bonus was the absolutely delicious food. Our guide was knowledgeable and friendly, as were all the staff. Recommend this without equivocation.

Room Tip: All rooms seamed to be the same.

This was the 4th lodge we have stayed at and even though all the others were also excellent this may have been the best. The location is perfect overlooking a riverbed and a permanent (concrete filled) water hole. This was important because on one day (after a morning game drive and not finding the lions) at the lodge we saw giraffes, zebras, kudu, impala, warthogs and monkeys. The place is small with at most 8 guests with maybe 12 if all in a group. We had 4 to 6 on our game drives. Wiehan was our ranger/guide and Palance was our tracker. Wiehan may have been our most informative ranger yet. Clearly the two work well together and enjoy their job. In one day we saw the big 5. The food was also quite good. We particularly enjoyed the raw ostrich Carpaccio. We liked the wine cellar that provided you options of a range of South African wines to buy. The staff, headed by Michelle was great. We had a nice group of people on the drives that really heightened the fun experience. While this quality of lodge is not cheap it is worth saving up to stay in such a nice place to really make the most of what is often a once in a life time experience. We would stay here again on our next safari.

My wife and I had the pleasure to stay at Shumbalala on our 10th anniversary and I can't imagine a more special place to celebrate a very special event. Jeandra, Wayne and Herman made us feel so welcome...more like members of the family than patrons. The game drives were exceptional and we were amazed at Wayne's breadth of knowledge of not only the animals, but birds and plants as well. He and Herman also served the most unexpectedly elegant coffee breaks and "sundowners" in the middle of the bush...I miss those now that I'm back at work. The accommodations and cuisine were fabulous and truly exemplify what the hospitality industry should be all about. I only hope we get the chance to return and once more enjoy the lodge and its staff.

Room Tip: You can't go wrong with any one of the cottages.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
It’s a vast, wild place where the lions roam at Shumbalala Game Lodge, deep in the Thornybush GameReserve, one of the country’s great tracts of untamed game-viewing.Set as it is in a dry, singeing savanna of Mopane, Acacias and Umbrella thorns, quartered by easterly-flowing rivers densely shrouded in giant figs, fever trees and phoenix palms, the land is an ancient tapestry of natural wonder.Over-head the Loeries call their sharp warning while horn-bills swoop in an ungainly ballet between trees whilst vultures elevate on thermals portending an electric storm. As you push on through the bush it is the serendipity of nature that amazes most as your vehicle skirts art deco zebra, dozy giraffe, bright eyed bush babies, wildebeest (made, it is said, by the committee of left-over parts) and the rest Africa has to offer. It is even more of an adventure when you stumble upon a leopard lazing in the V of a Jackalberry tree or; a hyena giving you a lazy yellow eye in the gathering dusk; a majestic bull elephant crashing its way through the riverine thicket in search of sweet reeds or; a surprise sunrise encounter with a lion pride on the prowl. This is the world of Shumbalala. ... more   less
