I spent two nights at Tangala and it was an amazing experience. Having breakfast overlooking the waterhole guests watched a herd of over 300 buffalo come to drink. The camp is lit by oil lamps and the dinner was set around the camp fire....very atmospheric. On the second night a young bull elephant came to drink from the swimming pool. During drives there were sightings of Lions (with adorable cubs), Elephants, Black & White Rhinoand much more

Thank you Louw and your team for a thoroughly enjoyable experience. The setting with its view of the watering hole from camp, the welcome, friendly staff, dinner around the camp fire, great drives on which we saw more than just all of the Big 5..... A+ on all of these.

We had the privilege of watching a Nyala family right outside our accommodation, the little one running around with boundless energy.

Sighting Leopard on all our drives, Lions mating, baby Rhino with mom, the squirrel at the bar....

Kudos to you all - you doing a fabulous job.

Louw - thank you to your family for the sacrifices they make - we so appreciate having them share you and your vast knowledge with us.

Thank you for the memories.

Room Tip: Little Nyala seemed to hang around Room 5 - also close to Lapa.

We already made another booking, that says it all! Thanks to Louw Booysen and his staff we had an amazing weekend and we also met wonderful people. Please leave your makeup at home and enjoy nature!

Remember this is Africa and the sun is harsh even in June, remember a hat and sunscreen. There is enough time to relax, so do remember a magazine or book.

Arriving at an unfenced bush camp is not merely arriving at your hotel accommodation. We were met by the manager of Tangala Safari Lodge, Louw Booysen. We checked in and the do's and don'ts were explained to us. Don't walk around after dark, remember to close the door to your room, the beating of drums will invite you to dinner ........ We realised that a special experience stretched out in front of us!

Animals were always present at the waterhole in front of the lodge. Nyala, elephant, buffaloes and wildebeest were only a starter to the awesome experience we had on the late afternoon game drive. Louw is a very knowledgeable game ranger and we acquired a load of new facts and stories about animals and nature from him. Our tracker, Bennett, guided us to four of the big five and we were speechless when a leopard dragged a freshly killed warthog into a tree! This was a National Geographic moment!

On our return, the camp was lit by small burning lamps and lanterns along the walkways and in the dining area. Hot face wipes and sherry were handed to us as we got off the vehicle. What a charming moment this was! A three course dinner was served around the fire and we felt happy and very much part of this unique bush camp. Our rooms were prepared by staff members - burning lamps, draped mozzie nets and backfolded linen.

Early morning drive delivered the last member of the big five - rhino mother and calf. Cherry on top was sighting of a cheetah. Breakfast was served on the deck and we all agreed that we could stay here for a long time.

Thank you to Tangala Lodge and every staff member for this unforgetable experience. This is truly elegance from a bygone era.

So interesting that you use the word 'elegance': we don't attempt to be anything but really relaxed and authentic and I guess that the natural flow of nature and the easy rhythm of the bush, does bring with it an African elegance.
So glad you visited us. And thanks for taking the time to write a lovely review. See you back, soon.

We HOPE that the fact that quality of sleep only rated a 4, was because of the lions who are so active at night at the moment, and not for any other reason! Thanks for the lovely feedback and we are certainly looking forward to welcoming you back again, too. We were fortunate to spend 2 nights at Tangala for our 21st wedding anniversary. The accommodation was very comfortable and clean with no unnecessary frills often found at upmarket bush establishments which are nice, but unnecessary. The staff are welcoming and friendly, especially our ranger Thomas. I have to say, that Thomas provided us with the best game drives we have ever been on, and as seasoned SA travellers, we have been on quite a few! His enthusiasm for and knowledge of the bush is great, his guest -relation skills exceptional too. He and his tracker Reuben, are no match for any coy lion!
The food at Tangala is very tasty, no frills or fuss, but wholesome and very filling - we just loved the venison pies. Keeping breakfast warm was a challenge, but bear in mind, the camp has no electricity, so no microwaves will be nuking your food. Management provided us with a private table on our second night, and a bottle of sparkling wine on the house - it was lovely and I shall remeber it always, so thank you!
Overall, I would recommend Tangala to fellow SA's and the overseas tourist who is looking for a private game lodge experience that remains authentically african, no frills and fuss, but very comfortable and very reasonabl value for money for a private game reserve.

The stay we had here was outstanding. It really confounds me to see that this camp is eleven out of eleven in thorneybush according to trip advisor. Because of the 'low' rating the camp did not even come up on our radar screen. Very unfortunate.
We initially opted for one of the top three camps in the area according to Trip Advisor. Just a disaster. It was a real dump. They hadn't made any capital improvements in at least 10 years.....Obviously someone was sandbagging our initial accomodation on trip advisor. To make a long story short, we met some new friends (professional safari goers, five or more a year) at the first camp and they highly recommended we switch toTangala. We cancelled our last two days at the initial camp and headed over to Tangala, and boy we were not disappointed!!!! The difference between the two camps was like night and day. Tangala was EVERYTHING we had hoped for in a safari. Great, comfortable, accomodations. Good showers. Great food. Great staff. And wonderful intrigueing travel companions at the lodge to pass the time with. Oh and did I mention that the game drives were fabulous. Florin was great. We saw the big five and had an outrageous stay. I highly recommend this place for value, warmth and friendliness.
