Simbavati River Lodge
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 20 August 2014

This is an excellent location adjacent to Kruger National Park. We stayed in the luxury tents (with private bath and balcony) and the amenities were excellent. The schedule kept us busy, but not too rushed - early morning game drive starts at 6:15; return to lodge and breakfast around 9:30; rest and relaxation time until 2:30, then lunch; afternoon/evening game drive around 3:30; back to lodge around 7, followed by dinner at 8ish. Our guide and tracker were fabulous! They were so knowledgeable, friendly and could spot animals that I wouldn't see in a million years! I couldn't recommend this lodge and safari experience enough! You can't go wrong with Simbavati!

If this is camping then lead me to it. Simbavati was excellent in every way. From our welcome to check out we could not fault the friendly, efficient staff. The tents were luxurious and ours had a huge bathroom with big bath and an outside shower. Now that was an experience!. Our driver Christoff (you must ask to see some of his wildlife photos) and tracker Daniel were first class, we still can't work out how Daniel managed to spot a chameleon in a bush while driving along a dark, bumpy track. We saw so much wildlife and even got to see a genet cat in a tree directly above us. The hot water bottles and blankets were much appreciated on the early morning game drives as were the sundowners out in the bush overlooking some beautiful scenery in the evenings. Food and drink plentiful and fabulous. Sitting with a drink looking out at the wildlife wandering along the dry river bed was an experience we will never forget.

Room Tip: All tents were good.

The rooms are wonderful and the sightings are amazing. We drove with guide that is very familiar with the wild and tought us quite a bit. The food is wonderful and to have a drink on the deck overlooking the river is a treat.
The lodge is well equipped with friendly staff and safety is a main concern for the lodge.
We saw rhe great five including wild dogs and many more.
A pleasure to go there

Great location in National Kruger Park/ Timbavati game reserve, already on 1st night elephant next to our tent. We saw large diversity of animals on game drives (a.o. 4 out of big 5: Lion was not seen).

We had a very enjoyable 4 day stay at Simbavati river lodge, with a fantastic and really enthusiatic guide in Christof, very knowledgeable about all aspect of game, birdlife and vegetation. The only slightly disappointing aspect to our stay is that some neighbouring private landowners in the Timbavati reserve do not allow vehices from a neighbouring reserve to traverse their land, meaning that we had several instances of not being able to track or follow sighted animals onto neighbouring land, very frustrating.

Dear David R

Thank you for your review. Your feedback is greatly appreciated.

We are glad that you had an enjoyable stay at our lodge and we will pass on your compliments to Christof.

Thank you for telling us your frustrations. I will pass your comments onto management so that they can see if there is something they could try and do to find a solution to not being able to traverse onto other land owners land..

We hope you will come back and visit again.

This was our second time to visit Simbavati, we stayed 3 nights in 2011 and 5 nights in 2014. We stayed in one of the family rooms both times and they are large, luxurious and wonderful. The only reason I didn't give the lodge a 5 is because it is currently NOT A RIVER LODGE. The damn broke in the flood of 2012 and there is no water. Since this was our second trip we noticed a large decrease in the animal population and we were very disappointed. We did see the Big 5 but we stayed for 5 nights, if you plan a shorter trip you may not get to see some of them. It took all 10 drives to see Cape Buffalo. The resort and the staff are wonderful and even my 10 year old loved the food.

Dear riblackburn

It was great having you visit our lodge. Thank you for choosing Simbavati again :)

Sorry that the animals were not playing their part on your 2nd trip. Being an open system reserve which means no fences animals come and go as they please....sometimes there are herds of animals everywhere other times there is not.

However, we are glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay and that your 10 year old enjoyed our food - that is great news! We like to keep all our guests happy.

We hope you can come back again?

Keep well, kind regards Nadine

As a traveler that has been a fair few places I must say that my headline is no understatement. We stayed here as part of a G adventures tour and it was an amazing experience. We stayed in the luxury tents which had all the amenities of a modern hotel but also provided such features as an outdoor shower, heated beds, universal power adapters, a reasonably priced minibar and staff that were unbelievable. Upon entry we were greeted and given a basket to make our stay more enjoyable as the staff showed us personally to our rooms. Added bonus was reliable wifi in the lobby areas.

We also took 3 game drives with Simbavati and it was an unbelievable experience. All of my family actually enjoyed these game drives more than Kruger. The guides were very knowledgeable and provided a great, safe experience with the animals.

The food was also very nice and unique every night of our staff. In the luxury tents you can actually hear all the animals around you at night. The tents are all separated so privacy is ensured as well.
