We stayed for 4 nights from the 24th of August. We have travelled from the Canadian artic to northern Australia and this is the best camp we have ever stayed in. We were in tent 5, the best one right opposite the waterhole with an open view. Comfy, warm bed with quality bedding which is important in winter, en suite bathroom all spotlessly clean and tidied every day. Food was wonderful. Brilliant eating dinner by the boma under the african stars. I particularly enjoyed cook's announcement of dinner and the jungle drums telling us food was ready. Don't ask what venison is though.
But you don't go to Kruger for the food. What made this camp so special were the highly knowledgable guides and Carolein's consideration for our enjoyment of the experience. We did two bush walks which meant three men going with the two of us for three hours. Eugene and Michael could not have been better. We learned so much and they clearly cared that we had a good time. Got to creep up on the hippo's and elephants. The reserve is private. It is not shared with other camps and we were able to spend quality time with elephants, lion and buffalo observing natural behaviour with Johan and Michael. The highlight for us was our last sundowners with Michael when the two of us had 15 precious minutes alone with a rhino that had come to drink at the dam with the setting sun as a backdrop. Stood there in tears. Had the pleasure of sittiing on our verandah watching the elephant herd and also spotted hyena, honey badger and the jackal from the tent.Birding is superb. A special mention for the head guide, the never to be forgotten Johan who is responsible for the high standards of guiding in this camp and who was our dinner companion each night. Thankyou for taking care of us so well.
I booked direct with Carolein who took care of our transfer back to the airport and had us back in camp for a shower and early breakfast before leaving. I promise we will be back

We can't really say any more than what other have said. This place is simple yet very comfortable and very exciting. The drives we had were made exciting EVERY time with the skills of John our tracker and Michael our ranger. We saw Lions mating, cubs, elephants, honey badgers, croc, hippo to name but very few.

Food was again simple but beautifully announced and very tasty. We never went hungry.

All staff were very friendly and helpful.

If you want to be close to nature but with a few "glamping" elements then this is the place for you. I for one didn't want to leave.

Thank you Shindzela for making this everything we hoped a safari would be and more. We shall definitely recommend you to anyone we can.

my 13 year old son and I visited this camp in August 2013. It is a long way down a bumpy track into the bush. the journey was worth it. We were looked after so well by Johann and Mike. We loved our tent and we enjoyed the daily routine of an early start, safari, breakfast, relax, lunch, safari, dinner, campfire then early night. We saw so many animals, up very close, the highlight being a pride of lions feasting on a buffalo. We could not have been better looked after.
The camp is unfenced and it was fun to watch the animals such as warthog strolling through the camp while we sat outside our tent.
thanks to all there, we loved every minute.

Carolien the booking officer made everything so clear for us thru her emails it was easy to make the booking for 4 nights.
We had arrived at OR international at 7.30am hoping to drive the 6hr scenic journey,as suggested, to make the afternoon safafri at 3.30pm,unfortunately we got delayed at customs for 2hrs.
We arrived at approx 4pm and thought we had missed the afternoon safari, but Andre' one of the owner brothers located the safari vehicle and drove us out to meet up with Michael the incredible guide,we immediately caught sightings of elephants, giraffe, carou and many wild african birds,we stopped for coffee just before the night drive to watch the magnificient sunset, this was in the first 2 hours of our arrival..."Wow"
Dinner was being served by the bossy yet great cook Melita, she would verbally introduce her menu (different every night) but if you didnt listen to her intro she would frown...Lol
During the day we had a herd of 20+ elephants come down to the dry river bed in front of the tents and it was incredible how they dug for water with their feet and drew water with their trunks.
I celebrated my 60th birthday with some new found friends Barry and Jill and had a beer in the middle of Kruger on a manificent sunset, something I will cherish for life.
I may sound bias but if you can get on Michaels team on safari he has so much knowledge that he will explain why Rhinos walk in their dung, to the stars in the sky, he was a most informative knowledgable, well mannered guide you can ask for.
The sightings continued throuhout our stay with lions, rhino, leopard, hippo and crocodile we missed the buffallo so we got 4 out of the Big 5.
I would highly recommend Shindzela to stay, and enjoy, the professional guides and trackers, the great food, service and the friendly atmoshere created by the Shindzela team.
Well done 10 out of 10...a satisfied customer....Chris Abela

Shindzela is a small tented camp in the open bush. It is simple but extremely comfortable and the rangers are superb. It is a fairly structured day there, as your mobility is limited due to the very thing that makes it so extraorinary - the presence of large wild animals. On two of the days we were there herds of elephants came into camp. To see them so close up for extended periods of time was thrilling. But it is the elephants and the lions in the area that mean you are not allowed to walk to and from your tent after dark without being accompanied by an armed ranger ! The accomodations were simple but we had great beds and a lovely large attached bathroom. The meals were simple and hearty. All in all it was a fabulous and special experience - we felt privileged to be there.

This was the first visit to the bush for my wife and I (June 2013). We stayed two nights and wished we had stayed longer. While getting to the camp was a bit tedious - fly to Johannesburg, take the shuttle to Hoedspruit and then another private van to the actual camp, it was more than worth it. The following made it memorable:
1. A warm welcome by Sam, our ranger-cum-guide. He patiently explained all the rules of the camp.
2. The accommodation which is a spacious tent pitched underneath a big roof, on a raised platform and an attaced bathroom of sorts (had a toilet with proper plumbing). It was exciting to be able to hear animals right outside the tent at night. The staff were very thoughtful in tucking hot water bottles into the beds at night, which made the chilly conditions bearable.
3. A common dining area which also doubled up as a 'while-away-your-time' in the gaps between meals and game drives. It was nice to sit here and chat with other camp inmates or play chess, look at Shindzela's collection of books, animal skeletons and liquor. Meal times had a fun element where in the smiling head cook with bright eyes would come in and announce the menu and then drop in again a little later to announce 'mmmm', meaning the dessert!
4. Sitting by the bonfire at night and again indulging in useless gossip with the others, while all the while looking over our shoulders to check if the lions and leopards in our imagination had suddenly materialised behind our backs.
5. The game drives early in the morning and then in the evening (spilling over to post sundown) were the most thrilling part.We never felt unsafe and had the chance to view up close a lot of animals and birds, big and small. Sam was like a living encyclopaedia, telling us names of umpteen creatures, their habits, habitats, diets and even gave us some preliminary lessons in tracking. He indulged us with all our questions. We stopped for a break in the jungle on each game drive, munching biscuits, chips and drinking beverages and even wine!
6. Animals traversing through the camp, such as wild boar and the honey badger, added to the excitement.

All in all a magical two days spent at Shindzela.

Room Tip: If you are not totally sure about staying in a tent out in the wild but want to try, ask for a tent...

We stayed at Shindzela for 5 nights & found it both very affordable and a really good safari experience - had close encounters with lions and buffaloes ( perhaps a little close for some), and had buffalo, elephant and honey badger through the camp. Although there was a couple of 'quiet' drives, when the action was happening, it was really happening!!! One day saw 9 separate lions in different pride formations.
Would definitely stay there again although probably would not do the night at the hide - the real activity happens there at sundown and sunrise and you miss out on both although we did see a lioness and her two young cubs and adolescent male on the drive out.
Staff were very good, food simple but delicious and tents were comfortable. Would recommend tents 5 or 6 for maximum animal exposure.

Room Tip: Would recommend tents 5 or 6 for maximum animal exposure. If you're nervous or new to safari ex...
