This was a no-frills visit to a beautiful camp. Staff went out of their way to be friendly and helpful, and the guides and trackers were first-class. Meals were hearty and informal and we soon became friends with fellow guests around the table. What a pity we could not have a proper braai around the fire due to unexpected showers! Our room was spotless and comfortable, sitting on the verandah for a quiet read was as magical as going on a game drive. Game drives were fun and so informative with Johan trying to teach us to identify numerous bird species. His knowledge is astonishing and his sense of humour utterly refreshing. However, he is by no means a show-off ranger trying to impress guests. Our gifted tracker literally sniffed out lions from under the undergrowth. The early morning bush walk was a memorable experience. What's not to love?

Room Tip: Room 5 or 6, not sure which one exactly, located some distance from main area for privacy and quiet...

We were diving in Mozambique, flying via Jo'burg. Due to the flight scheduling over the New Year, we decided to add in a couple of days on safari and I am so glad we did !

The accommodation is lovely considering its posh camping - watch out for horse flies in the open bathroom though (use the spray - they soon leave !). The food is excellent - food intolerances were also accommodated with no fuss which is brilliant. The staff are friendly, professional and helpful. The camps little band of wild boar are also a world of cute (just don't try and touch them !).

We did four safari trips out and we saw loads, all under the loveliest circumstances - the guides respect the animals and the environment and share their knowledge, identifying everything. Its easy to forget what's in the sky and trees so it was useful having all the awesome birds pointed out. I got some great pics.

On top of all this, we saw four out of the big five !!!

I cannot recommend this Safari Camp more - there may be temptation to scour Kruger in the public areas but this is can be a stressful experience for all concerned (an elephant was shot for charging a car that drove at it to get closer). I believe its safer, more fun and more peaceful doing it this way.

Room Tip: All rooms are the same - and fab. We asked to be near the water but at the time of year we went, the...

Great place for a safari. The guides show miracles with the best spotting ever. Real wild safari, right through the bushes sometimes. Cars are comfi, the tents are very luxurious and cool. Nice food, nice people. Will be back one day!

Well, what can I say. I left with sadness. All that I expected turned out to be beyond my wildest dreams, it is the best Safari yet. The Lodge was like "paradise" (although I did not see any "apple trees". Togetherness of tents in its delightful surrounds. The staff were wonderful friendly people, when it came to caring about all what the visitor needed. The food was yummie (the best), the accommodation was accommodating, accompanied with many strange sounds in the night, if your not asleep. The safari drives were exciting and with never a dull moment, even looking for something that is really not "showing"themselves. But good tracking with my wonderful guide Johan and tracker Raymond we found them anyway!!! This tented lodge was mingled with guests from all around the world, and everyone were ever so friendly and fun to be with. Everyone said hello, chit chatted and were ever so excited when they saw an animal, even when, the "friendly war hog families" mingled about on the lawns. Yes many a photo taken. The big five were there, I saw with my own boggling eyes, the wild dogs put on a performance and posed for photos. Again it was an amazing safari, if "weathering" (age) permits I contemplate returning again next year. Coming from Downunder, this lodge is very reasonable, I do recommend a longer stay if possible, but that is up to the individuals themselves. Anyway thank you ALL for a wonderful stay. Highly recommended.

We stayed 3 nights - which was for us just right. Shorter stay and you don't get the right feeling for the safari live. Longer stay and maybe it will get a bit boring because there is not a lot to do beside the game drives.
We loved the dinner and evenings beside the fire place, the casual atmosphere in the camp, the small groups on the game drive. We did not like: ???

Wonderful location, a real nature camp with wondertful people and wildlife all over the place. Especially the guides were fantastic. Experts in spotting game and taking good care of the guests. Also the food served in the camp was delicious as well as the wine served.

Small lodge with 8 tents and with a cosy, casual and familiar ambiance. Sleeping in tents makes the stay an adventure and gives a real bush-feeling. Excellent food! Batteries can be charged in the main building. The rangers and trackers have excellent knowledge of the bush and animals.

Room Tip: Tent 7 and 8 are further away from the mainbuilding and more private.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Shindzela is an authentic tented bush camp situated in the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve, greater Kruger National Park. The camp accommodates a maximum of 16 guests and is unfenced, making it very much part of the wilderness. Shindzela is not built by an award winning architect, nor is it furnished by an interior designer. What you will find though, is a comfy bed, freshly laundered linen, and décor from local crafters and artists. Shindzela is a comfortable/rustic tented bush camp, where you can relax, enjoy our warm hospitality and immerse yourself in the African wilderness. We love our informal, relaxed atmosphere. Each safari tent is built on wooden decks, and has their own en-suite shower/toilet and hand basin. The camp also has a swimming pool and overlooks our little watering hole, from where you can watch animals come down to drink. ... more   less
