“The Lap of Wild Luxury”
Reviewed 17 June 2013

It really doesn't get any better than this. A luxury private lodge ideal for an extended family or small party. We were a party of four and only met two other (very nice) couples on our 5 day stay. The Game Drives are simply the best I have experienced and the Staff - well - they were fabulous - even to the point of a farewell song when we left. Dining was in a different location every day with a wonderful selection of food. The Lodge has its' own water hole with many animals visiting. Even an Elephant which helped itself to a drink from the swimming pool! Don't hesitate - Go!

Royal madikwe lodge is one of the best lodges I stayed in Madikwe and even in other south African's game lodges, nice and clean room overlooking the waterhole, excellent service and food, free WiFi and very good mobile reception.
its a unique lodge and small so you will be getting a specialized service and I always like such lodge that only can accommodate less guest and game vehicles are not fully packed with guests.

Room Tip: Room No. 4 is the closest to the waterhole.

Royal Madikwe is the best game lodge we have visited in Southern Africa and is as good as any of our game experiences in Kenya. What makes it very special is the staff who are focused on providing excellent service. Amos serves excellent meals with choices of main course for lunch/dinner. All the staff have been there for more than 5 years and it shows in the excellent service. We stayed in the Royal Suite whch has two bedrooms joined by a massive lounge and kitchen. There is a seperate lounge with satelite TV. On the enormous deck there is a jacuzzi which is gorgeous to plunge into. The Royal Suite overlooks the permanent water hole where we saw many animals, including elephants, lion, kudu, zebra and buffalo. The elephants also love to drink water from the swimming pool which we were fortunate to experience during our stay.

During our 5 night stay we saw all the big five as well as wild dogs and cheetahs. The first evening we saw 19 wild dogs on the move and looking to hunt. On the second evening we saw a leopard which we followed into the thick bush. On most days we saw lions with two highlights- first watching a pride of 8 lions feeding on a wildebeeste and secondly sitting between the lions when they are roaring their calls (very powerful and frightening in the dark). On our last day we saw 4 cheetahs chase and catch a young wildebeeste!! Amazing experience. Our ranger was Stefan who is totally committed to the wild life management within the reserve. He was fantastic in finding such great sightings and shared his bush knowledge with us. A great person to spend 5 days with.

As the lodge only accomodates 10 people maximum, it is really a very exclusive lodge.
During our stay the only other people at the lodge were the owners who visit the lodge on a regular basis. They were very friendly and made us very welcome at the lodge. The lodge is managed by Adam and Cherie, a lovely couple, who arranged for our visit and made our stay so enjoyable.
We are looking forward to returning to this wonderful lodge in a great reserve

Room Tip: The Royal Suite is great for 3 to 4 people. If required, request a double bed in the 2nd bedroom. Th...

There are many "hotel lodges" out there. They sleep 80 people, have 5 full packed safari jeeps and 3 restaurants. Royal Madikwe is different. It's your own private lodge. We've been there multiple times and never had to share the lodge with more than 4 people. It feels like you've just won the lottery and built your own private lodge.

Service: Extraordinary. Usually they have more staff than guests - now you can imagine the incredible personal service you get.

Value: The lodge is privately owned by a generous gentleman (It's not built to make tons of profit). You get more than you pay for.

Safari: Excellent. You see plenty of Lions, Elephants, Rhinos, Buffalos, only the Leopard is hard to find. Adam, the ranger, is the perfect guide - he knows everything about the animals and tells you mind-blowing facts on the side. Most of the other jeeps driving around are packed with people. Yours wont be. We had days where Adam would just take the two of us on Safari. The Krueger may have a little bit more action (but never this amount of luxury for this price)

Food: A dream. They cook for the few guests they have like kings. The main lodge house has many spots where you can eat. We've never eaten at the same place twice. They always put the table somewhere else. It's amazing. The food is all-inclusive (except for Wine, which they sell for a very good price).

It's simply the best private safari lodge in South Africa.

I returned to Royal Madikwe from 6-8 September 2012. Following the disappointing experience in September 2011, I was offered a complimentary 1 night's stay for 2 in a luxury suite with a view of the waterhole.

A friend accompanied me and we booked an extra night stay at the September rate. Our stay was very pleasant. We were the only 2 in the lodge over those 2 days, so we were treated like princesses! Our suite was right opposite the waterhole and given how dry the park is at the moment we were constantly entertained with game arriving to drink. Our ranger (Anton) was excellent and we saw lots of game including lion and a brief glimpse of a male leopard. The food was of a high standard and cooked to our specifications. A thoroughly enjoyable 2.5 day break.

Room Tip: Make sure you request a suite with a waterhole view. There is only 1 family unit that has this view...

We were looking for luxury accommodation, within a malaria-free zone which allowed us to bring our five-year daughter along. The Royal Madikwe provided all this and gave us an experience that we’ll remember for a lifetime.

Our stay

We stayed for four nights in late June, which is winter time in the Southern Hemisphere. We flew on a small chartered plane from Johannesburg organised by Royal Madikwe, about an hour’s flight. Flying over the vast open space was breathtaking. We landed on a dirt tarmac and waiting for us was our Adam, our guide for the week in an open air safari jeep complete with plenty of blankets. Upon arrival at the lodge, Cherie our host, had hot drinks waiting for us and she showed us around the property. There are only a few self-contained luxury suites, which have every detail and comfort considered. The style is straight out of a luxury travel magazine, incorporating local artisan artworks but with refined elegance that the most discerning and sophisticated traveller would appreciate. A beautiful swimming pool would be refreshing for the warmer months. Chef Amos and his kitchen staff provided the most delicious food and personal service that made us look forward to every snack and meal. Meals were set up in different spots in and outside the lodge, it really makes you appreciate the unique setting you only get form staying within a game park.

Child-friendly
Chef Amos also went out of his way to make donuts with our daughter. Funnily, we caught a cheeky baboon steal one of the doughnuts from the table outside when we weren’t looking. Cherie also provided some great activities for our daughter including making bead necklaces, face painting and T-shirt decorating. The lodge itself is in the middle of Madikwe game reserve and has a water hole where game of every sort gather at some point in the day.

The Game
We stayed for four nights and Adam magically managed to show us the Big 5. Our days started off with an early morning safari at 7am, returned to the lodge about 10 where a hearty breakfast awaited. Books, games and general relaxing until lunch at 2pm, then 3pm safari. WiFi in the lodge even let us catch up on home news on the iPads and our daughter enjoyed DVDs. While 7am might seem early for a holiday wake up time, the schedule was up to us. Everything about staying at the Royal Madikwe is about what works for you personally. We hope to return one day again.

Best wishes to everyone at the Royal Madikwe!

This is the first time we have ever written a holiday review but it would literally be a crime not to do so.
Royal Madikwe. Where do we start? There are not enough superlatives in the dictionary to describe this place and the experiences you will have here. Heavenly? Most definitely. Spectacular? Infinitely. Magical? No doubt. Worthy of 6 stars and the best holiday we have ever had in our lives to date? One hundred percent.
The truely remarkable experience started from the moment we sent Cherie - who runs the lodge, an accommodation enquiry email. We have never received such a warm, informative and positive
email back from any holiday group or company ever. Cherie has the patience of a saint - in that she answered so politely every question we had, and there were at least 15 emails from us in the
strive for a 'perfect' holiday!
From the moment we landed on the airstrip and whisked away by Adam - our game ranger, in his very comfortable safari vehicle, we realised we were in store for a very special trip. His warmth, knowledge, attention to detail and obvious love for his job was instantly recognisable. On the short drive to the lodge we saw zebras, giraffes, impalas and kudus. On arrival at the lodge we
were greeted by a sea of smiles from Cherie, Skoko and Eva and at once were made to feel part
of their safari family.
The attention to detail of the main lodge and all the lodge rooms are superb. Having stayed at
many 5 star boutique hotels and residences around the world, this definitely surpassed them all.
The design is African chic at it's best and the space vast in size. The main pool is gorgeous, our
private plunge pool deck was magnificent, the beds - the most comfortable we've ever slept in
and being able to bath (or shower outside) whilst watching animals stroll by is something we'll
never forget.
The views are spectacular overlooking the waterhole which was frequented daily by elephants,
zebras, giraffes, white rhinoceros and a whole array of other animals. During meals we felt like we
were watching a live version of 'The Lion King'!
The chef - the ever-smiling Amos, we think is worthy of a Michelin star. Every single meal we ate
was nothing short of exceptional. The wine list is phenomenal and yes, we managed to sample
quite a few! The staff who cheerfully waited on us - Eva and Kerri were an absolute delight.
As for the reason one goes on safari - to view game, our experience was so incredible that it's
really hard to put into words. Adam's passion, experience and desire to ensure you literally have
the time of your lives and see the big five (and more) is inspiring. Every drive was an entirely
different experience, whether we sat metres away from a herd of elephant or watching a lion
devour his prey. His knowledge is infinite and stopping for sundowners towards the end of an
afternoons drive - a very special experience.
Sharing dinner with Cherie and Adam on our last night was the perfect way to end our stay. They are such lovely, entertaining people and the perfect hosts.
We really can't encourage you enough to go and have your own life changing experience here. It is without a doubt the most magical place to stay and this is not just because of the fantastic
lodge, the incredible game viewing but most definitely from the warmth and happiness of the
Royal Madikwe 'family' - Cherie, Adam, Eva, Skoko, Amos, Kerri and anyone else we might have
forgotten (apologies but we're a little jet lagged). We miss you all and wish we were still there! Thanks for the magical memories which will stay with us forever. We're already planning our next trip and look forward to adding to those memories. Thank you again.
