My wife and I had an unbelievable time at Royal Madikwe. From the very initial drive in from the airstrip we saw tons of animals. And the staff (including the chef and waitstaff, Cheri, Adam, Sara and our all world guide Kyle) were tripping over themselves to make us comfortable and ensure we had a great time. The food was excellent and the accommodations, with the watering hole right in front, were simply amazing. It has easily been the best part of our trip to South Africa and give the entire experience 11 out of 10! We already miss it!

We had a really fantastic time at Royal Madikwe. The food was particularly spectacular and our safari guide Adam was really top notch. I would strongly recommend Madikwe - we met people who had been to Kruger and reserves in Botswana and not see rhino or leopards which we were fortunate enough to see more than once - primarily due to Adam's tenacity and skill. Exceptional.

Room Tip: The private lodge we stayed in for most of the stay was superb but the rooms in the main building that we had a couple of nights in are also very nice.

We were hugely excited about our first safari trip to South Africa - and particularly excited about Royal Madikwe, which looked so beautiful on the website. The reality is even better. From the moment we arrived we were transported into a world which was like nowhere we had visited before. The setting is extraordinarily beautiful - right next to a waterhole which ensures a steady stream of visitors, including elephants, giraffes, impala and buffalo - we almost didn't need to head out on the game drives! Although we did, of course - and these were amazing too. We saw everything we wanted to - apart from the ever elusive leopards, but as there are very few at Madikwe that isn't surprising. Our encounters with the varied wildlife of South Africa were often breathtaking - we'll never forget following the lions as they hunted an impala, or watching the wild dogs after they had made a kudu kill. Kyle made a great and entertaining guide, imparting vast quantities of information while always making us laugh - and we particularly appreciated our super-civilised sundowners and coffee stops, complete with starched linen! Yes, Royal Madikwe is a very classy place - but never overly formal or pompous. In fact it's the reverse - we felt relaxed and at home from the moment we arrived. The accommodation is stunning - we stayed in the Royal Villa, which deserves an interior design award - and the public areas are equally amazing. We ate in several different locations throughout our stay, all with something special to offer - we especially loved the many varied table settings, often featuring leaves and flowers - every meal was memorable. And the food… incredible. Amos and Beauty are truly talented chefs and everything was delicious - down to the home-made bread. We seemed always to be eating! Royal Madikwe is run with an amazing attention to detail - nothing has been forgotten - and the whole team has the knack of making their guests feel very, very special. Madikwe itself is wonderful - you see other safari vehicles only rarely - which is exactly how I want my safaris to be. For of course, having experienced Royal Madikwe once, I just have to go back to this South African idyll again, and as soon as possible! It really is a little bit of heaven.

Room Tip: If you can, book one of the rooms next to the waterhole

The Royal Madikwe Lodge surpassed all expectations. It was the last of a number of game lodges we stayed in, we thought it would be very difficult to surpass Shamwari and Thornybush, but it did. Despite beautiful and quite luxurious accommodation, especially the Royal Villa where we stayed, it also felt very homely. The staff are quite amazing, great hosts, awesome kitchen and house staff. Our kids were incredibly well looked after and most importantly safe. The food is mouth watering. The game viewing is real, in all due respects to other game lodges, this isn't a zoo, the land area massive and viewing can be a challenge but failed to ever let us down. Fighting dominant male lions, wild dogs making a kill, elephants, rhinos with calves and cheetahs. We were very lucky to see it all and entertained brilliantly along the way by Adam. We could not have ended our trip in a better way. This place is a must.

Room Tip: If you can afford it, the Royal Villa is simply amazing.

We had such a great holiday at Royal Madikwe. The staff really make you feel very special and the lodge itself is beautiful. The South of the reserve is quiet and the sighting brilliant. We will definitely be back soon!
