“The holiday of a lifetime”
Reviewed 20 July 2014

My wife and I were lucky enough to win two free nights at The Bush House – the owners had donated the free nights to our local hospice in Cape Town, which already tells you something about their generosity. It turned out to be the holiday of a lifetime. The Lodge is wonderful in every way – perfectly situated, attentive staff who are helpful but not intrusive, excellent food (and you can ask for a range of foods according to your dietary preferences and needs), and luxurious and comfortable accommodation. The game drives twice a day with a really excellent and knowledgeable guide are a highlight and were a great joy for us. The lodge overlooks a water hole which is very cleverly arranged so that the fence between the lodge and the water hole is not visible – you get really close to a wide range of animals (we were lucky enough to see about 100 buffalo in the water hole one night – at other times we saw elephant, kudu, impala, rhinos, warthogs, kudu, baboons – we saw lions on our game drives but not at the waterhole). There is an underground hide with very easy access from the lodge and this brings you literally within a metre or so of some of the animals – a really remarkable experience. I have been to other game lodges in southern Africa and enjoyed them but this was by far the best experience in every respect. It is not cheap, but when you see what is on offer, you realise that this is not overpriced for what you will get as a visitor. A wonderful place, with great staff, and an experience to treasure.

Room Tip: We were lucky enough to have the one room which looks out over the water hole and that was wonderful...

I was a little unlucky with the weather but the staff, setting service, food and everything else were simply great. Coupled with the fact you usually see loads of game this is a great choice for any trip to madikwe

We spent one night at The bush house and it lived up to our expectation. A lovely and friendly welcome by Elrie. The bush house is an Old establishment but very tastefully decorated and very comfortable rooms. The food was outstanding and staff attention superb. The waterhole and hide we're truly magnificent and one could just sit and watch the waterhole all day and see so much. We saw big herds of elephant and buffalo come drink. The webcam is also a great idea. Full marks to Thomas our guide for his friendliness and willingness to share his knowledge of the bush. Tumi was great, friendly and attentive and provided us with a magnificent dinner and breakfast. If I have to be critical it would be the shower in the room. Was really bad so we bathed instead. We were sorry we couldn't stay longer. The hot water bottle in the bed when we went to sleep and on the cold morning drive was such a nice touch. Well done guys you made us feel very welcome.

I spent 2 days at the Bush House last weekend, and I never thought time could fly so fast. The house itself is beautiful, perfectly appointed and lovingly decorated. However, the first thing you notice when you enter the grounds is the water hole - and the 5 or so elephants (or giraffes, or impalas, or warthogs) that happen to casually stroll towards it. Right there, under your nose! And then there is the hide, and you get even closer to the animals; and I mean, 3-5 meters close. It doesn't get any better.
But the best are the people. I would say "great customer service", but it felt more like I was visiting friends. To begin with, great email communication with Sue (she and Gordon are the owners); Thomas took us on some incredibly fun and interesting drives (and yes, I was fortunate enough to see all the Big 5 during my short stay there); great conversations with JR; pleasant interactions with everybody else.
The Bush House is THE place to go for animal sightings, as well as great food and good company.

I spent 3 days at The Bush House and loved it. Sue was very helpful with the bookings, and the food was great. Madwike is a great reserve, wild dog, lots of hyena, lions .. all in 3 days. I love the lack of politics with regards the traversing rights (maybe thats a perception, but its so civilized). The hide is fantastic - particularly if you love birds. I will be coming here again next year.

My sister and brother-in-law had been to the Bush House on a couple of previous occasions and raved about it. So, when we were looking for an opportunity to see African animals in the wild during our visit with them in South Africa, we looked no further. What a unique and memorable experience! The owners (Sue and Gordon), along with JR, Thomas, and the kitchen and other staff all treated us with open arms and incredible hospitality. They really made us feel at home.

The Bush House is a small lodge which allows for a really intimate and unique experience. The food is very good and abundant and the rooms are spacious and comfortable. During our 2-night stay, we went on five game drives and were fortunate to see four of the Big Five, along with many other animals and birds, thanks to Thomas's perseverance. Equally amazing was the incredible show we witnessed at the watering hole and in the hide (a bunker of sorts that provides incredibly close views of the animals). I felt like I was watching a National Geographic show! We will definitely recommend the Bush House to anyone we know who is visiting South Africa. Along with being with our family, this was definitely the highlight of our trip.

We took my parents who were visiting from the US to the Bush House over Easter Weekend. From the moment we arrived we knew it was going to be a great stay! We also had our 1.5 year old daughter and everyone was so lovely and accommodating for her. The game drives were fantastic, the food was abundant and very tasty, the small number of rooms (which were very comfortable) makes the lodge very relaxing and intimate. The waterhole and hide was a highlight! For every game drive someone stayed back with my daughter and it was like having our own private game viewing, elephants, buffalo, impala, rhino, warthogs all came to visit the waterhole and my daughter (as well as all of us) was so delighted to be able to see the animals so closely (yet safely)!

We will definitely be back with more family visitors!
