We stayed for a week at in late March with two adults and two kids (8 & 10), all sharing a room. We chose The Bush House because it was one of the few lodges in our modest price bracket in Madikwe. We were blown away by the amazing place and the service was outstanding. Without exception the staff were pleasant, knowledgeable, efficient and friendly. The room was very comfortable. The waterhole is great and there were elephant there most days. This is then made even better with the underground hide which gets you right up to the animals safely! Although the pool is pretty small it kept our kids entertained for hours. The food was extremely good and they catered for our various likes and dislikes. However the highlight was the game-drives. We were worried that, with a full week there, the kids would become bored with two 3-hour game-drives each day. However, in the outstanding care of Tommy we were fully entertained and saw everything we could have hoped for. This included the Big Five and Wild Dogs and Cheetah. Seeing the Leopard was an example of perfect guiding by Tommy and we felt very privileged.
Overall this was an outstanding family holiday and we hope to return one day. Dom Goggs

Just returned from a 2 night stay. Great food, accommodation and staff. The waterhole and hide were a big bonus. Tours were well conducted by Tom who is leaving soon.We saw everything except Cheeta and Leopard (4 tours). Definitely recommend and go sooner rather than later due to increased poaching in coming years. Mornings in August are very cold!

A very elegant site with great service and staff. The morning and evening jeep tours were great and well done. The rooms were very nice, air conditioned and spacious. Food was very good and the hosts were very knowledgable. The water-hole near the lodge was very interesting, and a lot of animals could be seen on a regular basis. We visited before the new tunnel was in place, but I want to go back to see it. The tunnel allows very close access to the water hole. Definitely would go back.... Still need to see a leopard.

Thank you very much for your feedback and comments. We would love for you to see the Hide now that it is completed. Close up viewing of animals at the waterhole is really unique. Hope to see you soon and to find the leopard!

My wife and I were lucky enough to win two free nights at The Bush House – the owners had donated the free nights to our local hospice in Cape Town, which already tells you something about their generosity. It turned out to be the holiday of a lifetime. The Lodge is wonderful in every way – perfectly situated, attentive staff who are helpful but not intrusive, excellent food (and you can ask for a range of foods according to your dietary preferences and needs), and luxurious and comfortable accommodation. The game drives twice a day with a really excellent and knowledgeable guide are a highlight and were a great joy for us. The lodge overlooks a water hole which is very cleverly arranged so that the fence between the lodge and the water hole is not visible – you get really close to a wide range of animals (we were lucky enough to see about 100 buffalo in the water hole one night – at other times we saw elephant, kudu, impala, rhinos, warthogs, kudu, baboons – we saw lions on our game drives but not at the waterhole). There is an underground hide with very easy access from the lodge and this brings you literally within a metre or so of some of the animals – a really remarkable experience. I have been to other game lodges in southern Africa and enjoyed them but this was by far the best experience in every respect. It is not cheap, but when you see what is on offer, you realise that this is not overpriced for what you will get as a visitor. A wonderful place, with great staff, and an experience to treasure.

Room Tip: We were lucky enough to have the one room which looks out over the water hole and that was wonderful...

I was a little unlucky with the weather but the staff, setting service, food and everything else were simply great. Coupled with the fact you usually see loads of game this is a great choice for any trip to madikwe

We spent one night at The bush house and it lived up to our expectation. A lovely and friendly welcome by Elrie. The bush house is an Old establishment but very tastefully decorated and very comfortable rooms. The food was outstanding and staff attention superb. The waterhole and hide we're truly magnificent and one could just sit and watch the waterhole all day and see so much. We saw big herds of elephant and buffalo come drink. The webcam is also a great idea. Full marks to Thomas our guide for his friendliness and willingness to share his knowledge of the bush. Tumi was great, friendly and attentive and provided us with a magnificent dinner and breakfast. If I have to be critical it would be the shower in the room. Was really bad so we bathed instead. We were sorry we couldn't stay longer. The hot water bottle in the bed when we went to sleep and on the cold morning drive was such a nice touch. Well done guys you made us feel very welcome.

I spent 2 days at the Bush House last weekend, and I never thought time could fly so fast. The house itself is beautiful, perfectly appointed and lovingly decorated. However, the first thing you notice when you enter the grounds is the water hole - and the 5 or so elephants (or giraffes, or impalas, or warthogs) that happen to casually stroll towards it. Right there, under your nose! And then there is the hide, and you get even closer to the animals; and I mean, 3-5 meters close. It doesn't get any better.
But the best are the people. I would say "great customer service", but it felt more like I was visiting friends. To begin with, great email communication with Sue (she and Gordon are the owners); Thomas took us on some incredibly fun and interesting drives (and yes, I was fortunate enough to see all the Big 5 during my short stay there); great conversations with JR; pleasant interactions with everybody else.
The Bush House is THE place to go for animal sightings, as well as great food and good company.
