“Equal parts relaxation and adventure!! Amazing Lodge!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 January 2014

We visited Buffalo Ridge Lodge in October during school break. We were in South Africa for 6 nights with 4 nights spent out at Buffalo Ridge. We have done lots of travelling while living abroad but this was by far the most amazing trip we have taken!!
We took a few wrong turns getting out there, but that was our own fault for following the GPS!! Just print off the map and google directions and its dead on.
Got to wonderboom gate and in we went. We were a little freaked out at first since within about two minutes of driving we saw an elephant and then a few zebras. Finally found Buffalo Ridge(once again, don't follow the GPS!!!) and were greeted warmly and shown around the property. It was a bit like swiss family robinson in the front desk area/restaurant which we thought was pretty amazing.
We were taken to our room and told timings for everything and warned NOT to go between the main lodge and the room after dark without a staff member because the lodge area is not fenced....oh right, we're on a game reserve!
When we were standing on the deck the first morning there were lions roaring down below in the canyon and a herd of buffalo wandering past below. We were in awe.
Our room was better than I was expecting. It is a safari lodge not a resort and you should expect that. Caught a massive spider thing in a jar the one morning!!! You're in the bush so that is to be expected!! Other than that I had no complaints about our room, they set up a little bed for our daughter and we had fresh water every day and no issues.
The food. Breakfast was much like you'd find at hotels all over europe, you could also order hot food it you liked. But lunch and dinner were amazing. We had ostrich for the first time and were lucky enough to have it twice, it was delicious! I can't complain at all because we thoroughly enjoyed all of the food. They even went out of their way to cater to my gluten free status and it was still very tasty. We had the boma dinner on our last night which was interesting and tasty.
Now to the game drives. Lazarus, what can we say other than he was absolutely amazing. He went out of his way to make our experience fabulous and we can't thank him enough. If you're trying to decide between two lodges, I'd pick this place just to be able to go on safari with him!!!! He was knowledgeable, friendly and professional and even though I was absolutely terrified at times, he assured me that we weren't in any danger and I very quickly realized I was in good hands. We saw elephants, lions (three times), leopards(twice!), rhinos (twice), zebras, wild dogs(twice), hyenas, warthog, red haartebeest, oryx, birds of every different type, giraffe, wildebeest, buffalo and all of the little deer species around. We went up down and all over that park and crammed our heads full of information. We had two young kids (one with our group and another with the group that was also staying there) and he was excellent with them. Made them feel included, adjusted his information and teaching to their age. Told them stories about Africa. We were so impressed.
This is a co-op run lodge. That means one of the local communities is part owner and runs the place. It was part of the reason we chose it.
I would 100% recommend visiting this lodge and we would return again in the future.

Room Tip: We stayed in #2, good view, close to the main lodge when all the scary things come out after dark ;)

I was taken to Buffalo Ridge as a guest and wasn't sure what to expect. The lodge and rooms are lovely, not super luxurious but comfortable, sympathetic to the surroundings and perfect for staying in for a few days. What really makes the place is the safari. We had Lazarous as our guide for 3 days. His knowledge of the park and animals was superb. We saw so much wildlife and learnt so much about them all combined with fantastic scenery. The staff were great, really friendly and very helpful with our friends young children.

An easy and scenic drive about 3 and a half hours from Johannesburg ,close to the Botswana border.
located on a ridge overlooking the expanses of the game park and the beautiful hills ...an ever changing scene from dawn ( first game drive) to dusk ( another game drive) with magnificent African sunsets.
The accommodation in a thatched cottage was lovely..seemingly rustic but luxurious at the same time with all modern conveniences.
The main lodge is an amazing rustic looking structure with an indoor but outdoor feel.
Dining was exceptional...
Game drives with the most knowledgeable rangers topped the experience.
This lodge is community owned by the Baleti people who staff and manage it.
A wonderful experience all together.

This lodge is quite old already and shows its age.
The closet was broken out of the wall in our "5 star" room, when we complained they eventually moved us to another room.

The food was average, the service was average.

Madikwe is overpopulated, elephants have damaged the place! It is very depressing there.
It feels like a glorified zoo, all the game viewing vehicles all rush to the same places.

Rather go to the Kruger, spend the same amount of money - but it will be out of this world!
We were very disappointed - especially as it is very expensive.

We came as guests of some VIPS so we did not have to pay the full price for this incredibly great experience, however, after having had such an awesome time, we would gladly pay the full price to do it again! We arrived at 2:00 PM and were greeted with hot, scented towels and a cool goblet of delicious apple cider. Our rooms were spectacular and the view of our room, #8, was breathtaking. We had a delicious lunch and then climbed aboard the most comfortable Safari Vehicle we had ever been in and started our two hour Game Drive. We saw most every animal, including Giraffes, Elephants, Rhinos, Lions, Kudu, Wildebeest, Cape Buffalo and tons of smaller game! Our guide, Lazarus, was the most knowledgeable guide we had ever been with and was focused solely on getting us close to all these great animals for once in a life time pictures and videos! The food, rooms, service, and guiding were all deserving of the 5 Star Rating that the lodge has. We can not recommend this place enough!

Room Tip: There are 8 Challets, #8 seemed to have the best view. Bring warm clothes during winter months. T...

I went to spend the weekend at Buffalo Ridge . When we got there we went on game drive , got to see various game and watched wild dogs eat an impala !! Dinner was amazing , great food and good service made the meal quick and tasty !! That night we got a phone call that my mom-in -law had taken a turn for the worst in hospital ... At 2:05 am I phoned the manager and explained that I needed to leave ... In 20 mins he organized someone to open the gates of the park and we were escorted to the gate !! They really went out of there way for me !!!

My boyfriend and I visited Madikwe over Easter weekend and had a wonderful time.

We were surprised by the negative reviews on Trip Advisor as we found the staff to be extremely helpful, warm and welcoming; our game ranger, Isreal, to be very knowledgable; the game viewing to be fantastic (we saw 13 lions (incl. 3 cubs), wild dogs, rhinos, elephants, buffalo, cheetahs and all the usual suspect over the three days that we were there); and the food to be decadent and well prepared.

The trip was real value for money compared to what some of the other lodges on the reserve are charging (over a long weekend - peak time). The experience was relaxing (thanks to luxurious rooms and a beautiful pool) and we cant wait to go back.

We would highly recommend Buffalo Ridge Safari Lodge to anyone who is looking for an 'all inclusive' weekend in the bush!
