We visited Buffalo Ridge Lodge in October during school break. We were in South Africa for 6 nights with 4 nights spent out at Buffalo Ridge. We have done lots of travelling while living abroad but this was by far the most amazing trip we have taken!!
We took a few wrong turns getting out there, but that was our own fault for following the GPS!! Just print off the map and google directions and its dead on.
Got to wonderboom gate and in we went. We were a little freaked out at first since within about two minutes of driving we saw an elephant and then a few zebras. Finally found Buffalo Ridge(once again, don't follow the GPS!!!) and were greeted warmly and shown around the property. It was a bit like swiss family robinson in the front desk area/restaurant which we thought was pretty amazing.
We were taken to our room and told timings for everything and warned NOT to go between the main lodge and the room after dark without a staff member because the lodge area is not fenced....oh right, we're on a game reserve!
When we were standing on the deck the first morning there were lions roaring down below in the canyon and a herd of buffalo wandering past below. We were in awe.
Our room was better than I was expecting. It is a safari lodge not a resort and you should expect that. Caught a massive spider thing in a jar the one morning!!! You're in the bush so that is to be expected!! Other than that I had no complaints about our room, they set up a little bed for our daughter and we had fresh water every day and no issues.
The food. Breakfast was much like you'd find at hotels all over europe, you could also order hot food it you liked. But lunch and dinner were amazing. We had ostrich for the first time and were lucky enough to have it twice, it was delicious! I can't complain at all because we thoroughly enjoyed all of the food. They even went out of their way to cater to my gluten free status and it was still very tasty. We had the boma dinner on our last night which was interesting and tasty.
Now to the game drives. Lazarus, what can we say other than he was absolutely amazing. He went out of his way to make our experience fabulous and we can't thank him enough. If you're trying to decide between two lodges, I'd pick this place just to be able to go on safari with him!!!! He was knowledgeable, friendly and professional and even though I was absolutely terrified at times, he assured me that we weren't in any danger and I very quickly realized I was in good hands. We saw elephants, lions (three times), leopards(twice!), rhinos (twice), zebras, wild dogs(twice), hyenas, warthog, red haartebeest, oryx, birds of every different type, giraffe, wildebeest, buffalo and all of the little deer species around. We went up down and all over that park and crammed our heads full of information. We had two young kids (one with our group and another with the group that was also staying there) and he was excellent with them. Made them feel included, adjusted his information and teaching to their age. Told them stories about Africa. We were so impressed.
This is a co-op run lodge. That means one of the local communities is part owner and runs the place. It was part of the reason we chose it.
I would 100% recommend visiting this lodge and we would return again in the future.
