La Fonda is nicely located on the central square. The bar and restaurant are pleasant places to retreat to. Paying for parking in the back of the hotel is worthwhile, as parking in Taos can be a problem. The rooms upstairs and in the back are the quietest. The more expensive rooms facing the plaza can be very noisy, mostly thanks to loud motorbikes.

This is the only hotel on the plaza, but there are many other choices within a short walking distance. In my view, it is overpriced. The room was nothing special. The TP was cheap. I was on the second floor. Unbeknownst to me, staff live on the 3rd floor. I can testify that they get up at 5 am, so plan to wake up early. The walls of the room were thin, so you hear everything that goes on in the next room. The common areas are nice. Mosaics Restaurant on site is excellent. As a guest, you can get coffee and the like from the coffee shop on the ground floor. There is a little DH Lawrence art exhibit that was interesting, and the woman who showed it to me was quite knowledgeable about it.

My husband stayed at Hotel La Fonda for two nights while visiting the Taos area. The hotel is located right on the plaza, which is super great for walking to dinner and shopping, but not so great for noise. As many past reviews have said, the walls are thin and the plaza noise can get a bit loud...there is a reason ear plugs are provided in each room!

Otherwise, our standard King room was adequate, with one odd quirk that to get coffee, you have to go down to the lobby café and show your room key for a free cup.

The property is an old historic building which adds to it charm.

The hotel is right on the historic plaza, so it's convenient to walk around and shop and dine. The bedroom was clean and lovely and comfortable. We had 3 windows, so it was nice and light. Down sides: room was a bit small and there was a step up to the bathroom that was hard to get used to. Also our 2nd story windows opened onto the plaza and youth outside were annoying loud past 1:00 a.m. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. Nice perks: while not a free breakfast they offer free coffee and hot choc at the "starbucks" type cafe. If you go there, ask to see the special D.H. Lawrence "forbidden" paintings.

After a fun drive up from Santa Fe via the "high road" and through Chimayo, I wandered into Taos late in the afternoon, and without a room reservation anyway. My stop at the Visitor Center about 1 mile outside of town, was fairly benign as they recommended some standard non-descript hotels along the way into the heart of town.

I'm sure the non-descript hotels/motels along the way would have sufficed, but I was on vacation, and I wanted something charming with southwest kitschiness.

I drove into the Plaza, called a B&B a friend recommended, but no one answered the phone (their loss!). I looked up and Hotel La Fonda was right in front of me...so I hung up the phone and wandered in. The hotel certainly had a charming lobby and enough Southwest flair to warrant inquiring about room rates. The attendant at the front desk was a very nice guy (I've forgotten his name), super friendly, easy to talk to, and gave me a great midweek rate and upgraded me to King corner room at no additional charge.

While booking me in, I couldn't help but notice the original woodcarved hotel mail station. Just a nice piece of preserved history increasing the charm and warm of the lobby. They also have an homage of sorts to RC Gorman and lots of his reprints are opposite the front desk. As luck would have it, upon check-in the attendant also gave me a very nice RC Gorman 2014 calendar with framable pictures...nice stuff if you are into this sort of thing.

The King room I got was nicely situated directly in front of the plaza with lots of windows and light. The bathroom was a bit small, and would only fit one person at a time. There is free parking behind the hotel, and free coffee all day at the attached cafe. However, much to my chagrin, they do not provide breakfast. Also, on a bizarre front, the front desk controls your room temps. *Shrug*

For additional intrigue, ask to see D.H. Lawrence's "forbidden" paintings in the conference room.

All in all, I had a nice stay at La Fonda and would not hesistate to return.

Ample parking behind hotel is monitored by camera and security. The gravel was think making it difficult for our motorcycles. There is no pull-in in front so you will have haul your bags from the lot unless you are lucky enough to get a spot out front on the plaza.

Front desk Staff were great and check-in was a breeze. They were very knowledgable of the area and all there recommendations were spot-on.

The room was excellent. Very clean and had a true Southwest feel. The late August weather made for perfect open window sleeping.

I would say the only downside would be the distance from parking to Check-in for some and lack of Laundry service which is nice when traveling on a motorcycle.

I would stay again without hesitation.

This was an outstanding hotel that has been recently updated. It is the only hotel on the Plaza and is the best overall value in the city in my opinion. We were impressed with the superb rooms that were well decorated and in excellent condition. The diamond finish interior stucco and the thoughtful southwestern decorations were the right environment for the traveller who wants to experience Taos decor. The free internet service, and a common room located on the balcony above the lobby was very nice and thoughtful for the family. Given that parking and hot drinks from the coffee bar downstairs are complimentary, it is a good value.

Room Tip: Go with a suite.
