Mabel Dodge Luhan House
Ranked #12 of 23 Taos B&B and Inns
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 7 May 2006

This is not your average hotel or B&B. About 5-10 minutes' walk from the center of Taos, the Mabel Dodge Luhan House is rustic and very evocative of its own fascinating history. It was wonderful for a few nights' stay; more than that and the quirks might become tiresome.

I stayed in the solarium, an entirely glass-walled room on the third, top floor of the house. To reach it, you take a low-ceilinged stairway (watch your head!) to the second floor, followed by a very steep, narrow stairway. Hauling luggage up was an adventure. I shared the D.H. Lawrence bathroom, with windows painted by the author, which is down the steep, narrow stairway...not so fun in the middle of the night. There are no window shades in the solarium, so you're up at dawn to watch a stunning sunrise over the mountains - the house backs on undeveloped Pueblo territory, so there is nothing to impede the view. We heard roosters crowing and coyotes howling to greet the dawn. The lack of shades made the room too warm to stay in during the day, though. Other rooms we saw in the main house, including Tony's and Mabel's on the second floor, were appointed more luxuriously, with easier bathroom access.

Breakfast was a tasty buffet, usually an egg dish, baked goods, oatmeal and fresh fruit, accompanied by conversation with the artsy fellow guests. The grounds included a swing hung over a stream and a patio with picnic tables and fireplaces.

It's certainly well worth staying here once, and I would stay again, more likely in a ground- or second-floor room.

Yet another memorable stay at Mabel's house! You must stay in the solarium. Went to bed gazing at the stars through the windows (of which there are many! In fact the whole room is windows) and woke up to an amazing winter snow storm around 1:00 a.m.! It was like being in a snow globe! Then an hour later, it was a clear, starry night again! Amazing! ALL of the staff are absolutely wonderful. The breakfast buffet is something to write a book about! This is our second stay and we will be back again and again and again.....! Also stayed in the Ansel Adams room which is very cozy and spacious with room enough for three people.

The Mabel Dodge Luhan House is a camp for adults. The setting is interesting as is the house. The rooms and grounds are quite rustic, accomodations simple. Our party did have luggage as this was but one stop on an extended trip. Getting the luggage to the room was a trial over the rough grounds, wheels need a smooth surface. There is no assistance offered by the staff to help with luggage. Be prepared for uneven terrain in getting around the property and for varying levels in the main house. The unmarked two-inch drop between the living room and the office cost me a broken bone. On the positive side, the breakfast was wonderful each morning.

Spent a week here in August with a photography class. As luck would have it I got Tony's room, which has a very large covered sun porch and the D.H. Lawrence bathroom with its wood floors, painted windows and claw-foot tub. Basic amenities in the room -- no phone, tiny closet. Only complaint is that the door to the room does not lock, which would have concerned me if I had not been traveling with a group that had largely taken over the lodge. The food was wonderful -- healthy, filling, delicious -- as others have noted. The staff was accommodating, warm and fun to talk to -- very interesting people. The grounds are beautiful, comfortable and a bit magical in that special New Mexico fashion, as is the lodge itself. I will definitely be returning.

The Mabel Dodge Luhan House was everything I dreamed about for my first trip to New Mexico. Stayed in Spud Johnson's room with a great view of the mountain and the O'Keefe cross. Cozy fire and the best breakfast of my entire trip. I was very happy there.

Mable Dodge Luhan and husband Antonio (a native Taos Pueblo Indian) built this house, starting in 1918. It became a center for artists, writers, visionaries. I became interested while staying there for an artists' workshop and followed up this interest reading some of the many books written about and by Mable Dodge Luahn. Her presence in Taos was important to its development as a center for artists and writers. The house is a comfortable, adobe series of buildings. The breakfasts are outstanding, accomodations comfortable - a great value. cfbennett@insightbb.com
