“Funky, historic... but, tired”
Reviewed 1 October 2013

First, I have to say that I absolutely LOVE this place! So much history in the original buildings; you can just feel the past from the 20's / 30's when you arrive. I can get over the outdated bathroom fixtures, minimal (and, I mean: minimal) amenities when an incredible old New Mexico wood burning fireplace is a standard part of the rooms here. It is such a classic, and a place frozen in time.

So, if you're a bit snooty about having only the best, keep heading down the road. But, if you love experiencing the past in the here and now, this is the place for you! (Oh, and me...)

My only complaint? The lady that checked us in. Talk about indifference, bordering on absolutely rude! Older gal, sneering over her reading glasses. Greets you with "What do you need?" Not, "Welcome. How may I help you?". I returned to the desk only 15 minutes after check in to ask a question. She had no idea that she had just taken care of me moments before (so much for eye contact). Then, when my query had been answered, as I was saying 'thank you', she had already turned her back on me, saying to the person she was visiting with in the office, "So, like I was saying...". Aw, gee. So sorry that I interrupted the conversation! I just think I'll slink off into the restaurant and order a drink...

PS: the night security guy who delivered extra pillow and blanket AND showed us how to build a fire in these older adobe fireplaces was THE BEST! Personable, respectful, and a lot of fun to have conversation with.

Will we be back? You bet! No bitter, dismissive desk clerk can keep us away.

Dear buffalo57,
Thank you for taking the time to review the Sagebrush Inn. The property had an ownership change in late 2013 and will be getting the update it so desperately needs in 2014. It's like you stated people either really love the historic nature of the property or just can't see the charm. We will be making it an updated better "self" this year. I hope you will be coming back later in 2014 to see our changes or follow us on Facebook or our website Sagebrushinn.com.

This hotel was rated a 3 star by hotwire; should have probably been a 2.5 star. Hotel was fine, it just seemed worn out and way past its prime. It did have a little bar and decent sitting area. The breakfast was included and was very good. All in all, the place was ok for the money.

The beautiful old grand dame of a hotel was built in the 1930s, very unique. The room furnishings were a little dated, but super comfortable and well-appointed. For the rate, we felt like this was a great value. The property was quiet and easy to find, just on the outside edge of Taos. The bed was comfy and the room quiet; the bathroom was spacious with lots of Saltillo tile. Things we loved about this property: gorgeous spacious shady courtyard, bar, hot tub and breakfast.

The courtyard had a few chairs. So after a long drive, when we arrived, we got a couple drinks from the bar, put our dogs on leashes and hung out in the courtyard. We love sitting on our back porch at home, so this was a lovely treat to be able to enjoy it at a hotel. There was also another nearby large field to exercise the dogs.

The bar was a bonus! What we did not realize until we had stayed in Taos a couple of days, was that MOST of the restaurants do not have a liquor license, and usually just serve beer, wine and agave margaritas. The hotel not only had a full bar, but offered a live musical entertainment (Friday night).

The hot tub was enclosed in it own room with large glass windows. My husband said the temperature was perfect, and everything was clean and maintained.

Lastly, most hotels that include breakfast offer a breakfast bar with a few selections. We were so impressed with our breakfast. We were seated by a hostess at a table with a white tablecloth and flowers. A waitress took our order, from a list of 5 different breakfast options. We were served on real plates with real flatware, with little doilies underneath our cream pitcher. What a touch of class! And the service was excellent; our cup of coffee was never empty!

We would definitely stay here again!

We were at the Sagebrush Inn for eight days and enjoyed our entire stay. We would only stay here on a return visit. The full breakfast every morning was great, especially with the added touch of red or green chile on the side for a true New Mexico experience. We were most impressed with the staff at the desk, in the breakfast room and the housekeeping staff. They were all friendly, professional, hard working, responsive and dedicated to customer service. Our stay was a charming, memorable experience.

This hotel has some nice southwestern details but needs to be updated. The rooms are fairly dark and our bathroom floor needed to be swept. The air is forced air and not controllable by a specific temperature. The staff was friendly but if you need the front desk or anything from housekeeping, be prepared to wait. The pace definitely moves a bit slower here. A free breakfast comes with your stay and that was a good value.

We stayed here for 2nights after being at Ojo Caliente for a day, Made reservations that day and had no problem getting a room at a good rate, Got there very late 9ish and check in was a breeze. Our room was fine, nice soft towels and a balcony, did not have a fireplace but it was not cold enough to enjoy anyway.
Breakfast was great, really enjoyed the food and the service, just left a tip for our server.
Enjoyed having drinks at the bar once we plopped the bags in the room. Our Bartender Mocha was very friendly and helpful..she was closing but did not rush us. the second night the bar tender was also nice but closed the bar very early...Well it was a sunday so understand.
Loved the old feel of this hotel. will stay again.

Don't stay unless you like a mattress that sinks 8" when you lay down. The room was filthy too. We checked into one of their "executive suites" which smelled musty and had a bedspread with tufts of filling coming out through the cigarette burn holes. We called the desk and they moved us to a "newer" room. Ugggg. We sat in in the room for a few hours and realized that we didn't even want to get into the bed. I stepped on something disgusting on the floor and we were out of there. I am not a germaphobe but I do expect a carpet that you can see beyond all the dirt that is ground in.They had the nerve to try to charge us for one night. This was at 5:30 a few hours after we checked in. BTW don't believe the "high speed" internet claim. It would limp along for a few minutes then crash. They had to keep resetting the router for some reason.
