“Filthy dirty - booked thru Hotwire - Rates highly inflated”
Reviewed 15 April 2013

We booked thru Hotwire therefore, there are no refunds. Nevertheless, we left after 15 minutes and lost our money, but it was so filthy dirty we could not stay. This room hadn't been thoroughly cleaned in over a year. There was an electrical heating unit running around the perimeter of the room that was covered in dirt. Behind the beds it was also caked with dirt, hair and God knows what else. The carpets were dirty, stains and things had been spilled (milk?) and there was a crust on the carpet between the beds. Both comforters were faded and had holes, and were also dirty. We booked a non smoking room, and had to sign something saying we'd be charged $250.00 if there was any smoking in the room. Yet both blankets, really old and faded, had multiple cigarette burns on them. Mattress springs worn out. The sheets & towels, however, we're clean. I can understand the owners are having financial problems and cannot afford to replace things, but there is no excuse for a dirty room. We paid $78.69 on Hotwire for a room that should rent for $40.00. We left and went to Comfort Suites -- spotlessly clean, a king & queen & sofa, table and kitchenette for $ 79.00. Do not even think about staying at this seedy motel.

Room Tip: Tip: choose a room at a different place

Okay, so what's not to love? The rooms are clean, homey, and decorated southwest-style. The folks who run the place are both kind and informative. This hotel has all the amenities of a much more expensive place, at a very affordable rate. Hot tub, laundry facility, free wi-fi - and it's quiet and quaint, too. It's certainly not what one would expect from a hotel located right across the main drag from Walmart.

Room Tip: The rooms in the back half of the property may be slightly quieter - but road noise is negligible fr...

I keep coming back to this place because it's clean, reasonable, cozy, not crowded and the outdoor hot tub works. I generally don't frequent Taos all that much and I've been in more quaint, charming, historical places that are not worth the price. A couple of bed and breakfast places can get my attention, but this place is good for the overnight or a week’s stay. Lobby employee is efficient and quick. The Sun God is right across the street from Wal-Mart. That might turn some off, but I like the one stop shopping and hop back to the hot tub.

Room Tip: In the back next to the hot tub

Want to feel like you are important? The staff at this lodge knocks guest service out of the ballpark!! Super quiet..very clean rooms and the feel of the southwest in each and every room. Not a hotel for the traveler that needs the "cookie cutter" feel...but if you want a little local flavor this is the place.

We stayed in December for a ski trip ... the staff is wonderful, the location is great and offers a free shuttle to Taos Ski Valley. That said, the rooms are old and dumpy. The power went out several times during our stay and the rooms are on radiator heat, so temperature fluctuated. Was it worth the stay for the price? Probably, but these are very basic accomodations,

We stayed here in Dec. and enjoyed the hotel very much. The owners and staff were friendly, and although the hotel was built in 1947, it has been very nicely re-done with local color and style. We had a 2-room suite with a fireplace; very cozy and comfortable. This is not a 5-star luxury resort but doesn't try to be. It's simply a clean, quiet affordable place close to downtown. The outdoor jacuzzi was wonderful; even in the snow. The only negative might be the old-style wooden walkways upstairs, which can be a bit noisy if you're on on the ground floor. Upstairs neighbors can be noisy as well, so request an upper floor for a more quiet stay. Other than that, it was great, and we would stay here again any time--and probably will!

Room Tip: Gat a suite on the second floor--room 142 is great for a family.

We called only hours before our arrival and the staff scrambled to get us adjoining rooms in the face of a boiler failure that made some of the 50 or so rooms in the motel unavailable. They succeeded in arranging for a deluxe queen room and a room with two queens and a kitchenette in one of the buildings furthest from the highway.
We rate this place above average because of the thought and care that went into the design and decor. The rooms are Taos to a "T." Nichos with hand-crafted art, subtle lighting, hand-made furniture, hand-laid tile, and southwestern prints from the likes of the lateTaoseño R C Gorman. We found the price reasonable for the quality of the space and the location, minutes from the town plaza.
There are some tradeoff for this chance to live like a native. The rooms were thin on towels, tissues (absent), and other supplies. Mattress toppers would have helped bed comfort. The kitchenette offered one fork, two spoons, four plates, and no dish soap or other cleaning supplies. (We used picnic plastics from our cache.) The wooden steps were icy in places.
No breakfast is served (in fact the office had yet to open when we left at 9 a.m.), but with excellent options like Michael's only minutes away this was not really a problem. The courtyard was snowy and the hot tub unused during our stay, but both amenities would appeal to summer visitors and skiers, respective of the season.
Bring a few extra supplies and enjoy the ambiance!

Room Tip: Not all the 100 numbered rooms are on the first floor. Ask if this is a problem.
