My family and I stayed here for a week in February and used the property as home base for daily ski trips in the mountains up north. PROS: The place is beautiful and the rooms are tastefully done. The decor is awesome and the gas fireplace was thoroughly enjoyed in the dead of winter. Housekeeping is very accommodating with coffee, linens, etc. CONS: The front desk personnel were stoic, unfriendly and unwelcoming. The location is a bit out of the way from downtown area...walkable but a bit of a hike. We changed to the Taos Inn on our most recent trip and although it is a downgrade, it is way, way funner.

Yes, I am reading the recent reviews and am not surprised. I have stayed there twice. The first time was before Marriot's name started appearing on their website--the stay was amazing. Service and food was excellent, attention to detail was spot on, and the overall feel of the place made one want to return. Last time I stayed Marriot's name was omnipresent and the service was missing along with the attention to detail. This is a shame because El Monte is a special place that deserves handlers that live up to the aesthetic vision of the place. Somebody had it right at one point and whomever is presently calling the shots needs to figure out what went wrong. Ladies and gentleman, it's time to right the ship.

Sorry you were unhappy with the service. Our standards have always been high and will continue to remain there. We continue to work on training of new staff to reach and maintain these standards. Please feel free to contact us directly with specific issues we an address. El Monte Sagrado is still independently owned an operated by the Kessler Collection but it is member of Marriott's Autograph Collection brand and is not owned by Marriott.

We stayed for 3 nights in early July 2014. Grounds and pool area were nice and it is close to town. Those are the good things. The hidden fees, the noisy rooms, and indifferent staff are the not so good things about the place. This was our last stop on a long vacation to New Mexico, stayed out other "lower" grade Marriott's during the stay that had better service and way better experiences.

We hate that you left here less than completely satisfied with our resort. There is no excuse for service below our standards and we will refocus our training efforts to resolve this. Any fees should be disclosed when you make your reservations and if they were not, we need to know so we can address that issue. Please allow us to redeem ourselves on your next trip to Taos.

We stayed at El Monte Sagrado this past weekend with high expectations from it's 4 star rating, description and pictures. The room was clean, unique and lovely (Taos Mountain) and the grounds are absolutely beautiful (best part of the experience). The pool and hot tub were also wonderful. The down side is the Restaurant and all the extra fees, which seems to be consistent with a lot of other reviews. The service at the Restaurant was very poor and the waitress was so rude that we ended up ordering dinner in the bar. The food was average at best and high dollar for a bar. Breakfast was even worse, very pricy and food not good at all. My husband paid with his credit card and left a 20% cash tip and noticed that he was charged a 20% gratuity charge on top of this. We also were charged $21 dollars for self parking which is an unnecessary fee. As mentioned in other reviews, water is $5 a bottle in the rooms. Beautiful property but would probably not stay there again because of all the extra petty fees.

Room Tip: Make sure you get the room you request. We originally requested a King room and were given a queen...

I couldn't decide whether to rate this hotel average or very good. The grounds are unique, serene and beautiful. We enjoyed the setting of the hotel. We booked a Mountain View room that was nicely appointed and clean. It looks just as the photos depict. The 'bathroom' can be completely open to the room (except for the toilet) or shut off by curtains. In a strange place at night we like to have some kind of lighting to guide us to the bathroom, but like to sleep in a dark room. The best we could do was to pull all the curtains and leave the makeup light burning. It was still very bright. The second night we kept our phones handy to use as flashlights. The room had a gas fireplace, as well as a balcony. Very nice. However I got the impression that once one built the beautiful hotel, he or she lost interest in the project! One of the most pleasant and appreciated parts of our stay was our interactions with a very professional valet named Marcos.. He simply could not do enough to make our stay enjoyable. The biggest downside to the stay was the restaurant. The food was simply not good. In fact it was awful! There's no happy hour in the bar -- really no reason to try to eat or drink there. The hotel is .4 of a mile from the historic pueblo. A pleasant, doable walk. We had breakfast at Michael's one morning. It was such a treat-- perhaps the best meal of our 8 day trip. It's a very humble place, buzzing with locals. Try it! To get there make a right at the major stoplight between the hotel and the pueblo. Walk about 4 or maybe 5 blocks. It's on your left. We had drinks at the Taos Inn. Great bar. And they do have a happy hour. One more tip: Be sure to drive the 20 mins or so to see the Gorge Bridge. Well worth it!

Room Tip: The Mountain View Rooms are lovely. Bring your own night light!!

We stayed just one night at El Monte Sagrado in July 2014, and had an excellent experience!

The grounds are beautiful, a really serene setting. My husband and I stayed in one of the casitas, Tibet, and slept with a window open to listen to the waterfall just outside. The décor was exotic and charming, luxurious without feeling formulaic. We had dinner and breakfast at the hotel's restaurant, which was fantastic! Really delicious food and great service.

All the staff were helpful and friendly and welcoming. We weren't sure we'd be able to make the check-out time of 11am, and they were able to work with us on that. We will definitely return!

I'm a Platinum Premier Marriot member. My wife and I arrive late in the evening and were hungry and tired. First, I was using Marriot rewards points to book the room. The gentleman at the front desk seemed disturbed I was using rewards points. He informed us that we were upgraded to a suite because he didn't have a room that we wanted. This was about 9pm and we wanted something to eat. We stood at the hostess desk for about 15 minutes before anyone came. The hostess seated us. There was only two tables occupied and they were finished eating. The restaurant was due to close at 10 pm. The waiter ignored us until we got up and went to the bar. The bartender was very nice and allowed us to order from the restaurant menu. I complained to the hostess and she apologized but made an excuse that they were swamped earlier. She made the bartender comp our drinks. He was not happy! After eating we went to our suite and found it 90 degrees inside. We turned the air conditioner on but it never cooled off. We didn't bother to complain. For a resort, the only bright part was the valets. They were very friendly and willing to help. I have never been so disappointed in a Marriot affiliated hotel. It is not up to the standards. I will never book this hotel again.
