We had seen the Earthships described in depth on TV, so we chose to drive through rather than take the tour. Actually, we approached from the north so we came in the back way and exited through the main gate. Still, plenty to see and contemplate. Residents here must embrace the Earthship design completely, but we saw small things that could be created for any home, like the colorful bottle walls.

We were so inspired to see these buildings. Once we actually got there it was even better. It made my husband and I want to go home and start building things on our property! Definitely check it out. I believe there was a 5$ entry donation, which was worth it to go explore. Don't go too late in the day...I recall them closing kind of early and we were a bit rushed. Totally inspiring.

The Earthships are each custom built and reflect the owner's vision of a sustainable home. Very cool to tour and made me optimistic about the future of sustainable buildings.

This was a surprise. Our unplanned trip to Taos led us into the northern outskirts of Taos, or basically the middle of nowhere desert, but the barren landscape was interrupted by a strange, out-of-this-world community. From afar, I couldn’t decide if the homes looked like undersea mermaid dwellings or structures from another planet.

When we found the visitor’s center on the south part of the community ($7 admission to tour the interior and free outdoor self-guided tour), we stopped to find out just what this was all about. Basically, the occupants here are striving to be Earth-friendly with self-sustaining homes practicing all manner of clean energy generation and re-use.

On their website, you can rent some of the homes here for vacation stays, and surprisingly the prices aren’t bad. Fascinating place to stop by if you happen this way!

It seems crazy when you read about it - build with old soda bottles and cans and mud? When you see a building that looks like a palace, however, your mind will open up. There's a good, short video to introduce you to the concept of building a sustainable house, and lots of info throughout that is very convincing. We left wanting to buy land and do this! Our local building codes are years behind our desires, but we just might get there. We would have loved the opportunity to visit a functioning home (not just the visitor center), and maybe there are open houses sometimes. Definitely worth a stop, and only 1.5 miles from the bridge you'll be visiting, anyway.
