Kachina Lodge Resort and Meeting Center
Ranked #11 of 15 Hotels in Taos

This hotel was built in 1960 so is a bit tired around the edges but it has a lovely SW vibe from the architecture and furnishings and makes a refreshing change from the usual chains we stay in on our travels. Our room was the cheapest in Taos but we were very happy with our room and hot cooked breakfast with a lovely cup of coffee. The bed was very comfortable, there were lots of fluffy towels and the room was very clean. No coffee making facilities in the room.

Room Tip: Room near the main lobby

This motel is on the old side and could certainly use a good deep cleaning/update inside and out, but for the price it is more than fine for an overnight (or two)stay. We were there for an overnight. The bedding was clean and comfortable, it was quiet and woman at check in was friendly. They offer free full breakfast in their cafe which is nice but vegetarians beware!: the red chile has meat in it. Don't know about the green as they were out of it - a cardinal sin for a New Mexican eatery!

Room Tip: As all the rooms are set back, I would imagine they are all pretty quiet.

We stayed here two nights during a three day ski trip at Taos and found that it was a great budget option for travelers. Yes, the bathroom needs updating but it, like the rest of the room was very clean. The carpets and bedding looked rather new and the beds were very comfortable. The breakfast was one of the best free hotel breakfasts I've had as they cooked omelets to order. We would definitely stay here again. Also, the lobby and coffee shop areas are beautiful step back in time.

We spent three nights here and enjoyed the ambiance of this hotel. The grounds were lovely; the architecture and furnishings reflected the southwest mode. The lodge was a healthy walk away from the square, which gave you access to restaurants and shopping without having to worry about limited, expensive parking. The room was small but light, airy and tidy. The maids did a nice job cleaning so our room was always very tidy when we returned to our room at the end of the day. It would have been convenient to have a fridge, micro and coffee pot in the room. Coffee was provided all day in the lobby. A hot breakfast was also provided. I would gladly return to this lodge when I visit Taos again. Also, it had a shuttle service to the ski area for a nominal fee.

Room Tip: Try to stay in a building that is close to the main lobby.

We paid about $140/night after the inclusion of the $20 pet fee. In other words, pets are welcome, but not THAT welcome. There was a throbbing electrical hum that went on all night and kept us awake. When we complained, the response was, "Oh that....yeah....that happens sometimes. It's the electrical box." The room was dumpy and the mattress was saggy. Maybe we would have had a better room if it hadn't been ski season and we hadn't had our dog. Shrink-wrapped plastic "glasses." Neck-killing pillows (packed with foam cubes). Maybe the problem was that we got one of the last rooms and by the time we were staring at the ceiling listening to the hum, all other rooms were taken. The "full" breakfast was close to inedible. Pleasant, overworked staff.

They are lucky you do not see the room first. The lobby is well maintained and updated. The rooms are very outdated and not well kept. What a shock to walk in to the room and not see a fridge, microwave or coffee maker. The carpet needs to be replaced, walls painted or better yet just gut the room and start over. The breakfast served was lacking. The simple things like bagels, yogurt, bread for toast, cereal, hard boiled eggs and fruit were not even offered. This hotel is at such a great location, to bad they are not taking advantage that they could have no
vacancy every night.

The Kachina Lodge is an older motel, approaching run down. The room was clean but very dated, even the bedding was dated. We loved that there was real live antibacterial liquid soap for the sink and a dispenser for shampoo, conditioner, and shower gel in the shower. However, the shower gel was empty, the toilet paper was nearly gone, with no spare, and we only had two towels in the room...one hand towel and one bath towel; though we were brought some towels and toilet paper upon request. The radiant heater didn't work, leaving it a cool 55 degrees in the morning. Overall we were disappointed and felt this hotel did not live up to the Best Western name nor the price we paid. We will not be back.
