“Wonderful family place”
Reviewed 25 April 2014 via mobile

What a wonderful "off the beaten track" gem. Great for kids. Gentle on the earth. Totally different experience for us. Food delicious. Reasonable rates and extras. Loved the luxurious family tents. Best bed! Slept so well. Loved the remoteness.

Dear Glynda K,

Thank you for your delightful review. We are so happy to see that you and your family enjoyed your time with us.

Rocktail Beach Camp is the ideal destination for families with children of any age. A range of activities, freedom of space, warm and hospitable staff (including babysitters), a relaxed camp environment and dedicated children’s playroom mean that our guests are able either to take time to pursue their own activities or to leave their children in the care of our team while enjoying some
down time.
Kids’ guided activities include:
• Intertidal discovery of the coastal rock pools
• Forest walks in search of birds, small mammals and tasty fruit
• Shell collecting, fish netting, swimming, and dune and body boarding
• Snorkelling with fish and octopus in shallow waters
• Seasonal beach walks in search of turtle hatchlings

Thank you again for your kind words
The Rocktail Team

We had a great time. We stayed for 6 nights to relax and chill. At the end of those days I felt like I had been on vacation for a month, what a tremendously soothing and decelerating place to stay at. The accommodation was great and very much focused at the sea. All land activities are really just there to provide an opportunity to do something else if you don't want to go snorkelling or scuba diving. But why would you do that if you can walk to the beach in 15 minutes and go snorkelling right of the beach or at Lalanek which is just a 5 to 10 minute drive. The diving school right next to the facility provides scuba certification and the opportunity to dive (with or without a certified instructor) with some very amicable people.

The rooms (tents) are right in the woods and as a results there are many reptiles and insects around. Take your bug spray along as this is a malaria area (wouldn't bother with the malaria tablets though; more side effects than a chance of getting ill).

The new management, just there 2 weeks when we arrived, are getting into things and they have the potential to develop into a great new team as they spend more time in the facility and get. More familiar with day to day operations and the large team of staff. Everyone was super kind as we have come to expect in SA.

Birding is limited to finding the Rosy throated Longclaw and Senegal Lapwing. In camp the trees are too dense for most all birds with the exception of 3 types of bull bulls (dark capped, yellow bellied, and somber).

Room Tip: Room 14 to 17 as well as 3 are family rooms. We stayed in 3 which is slightly higher up and has a v...

Dear AvH123,

Thank you for your wonderful review, we are glad that you enjoyed your time in camp with us.

Rocktail Beach Camp falls within a malaria area. Although there are no towns or villages close by to make it a highrisk area, we do recommend that you take precautions to ensure that you do not get malaria. The best way to prevent malaria is to ensure that you are not bitten by mosquitoes. As 90% of mosquito bites occur after dark, when the female anopheles mosquito is most active, we recommend that when you leave your tent and at all times, you keep the doors closed to prevent unwanted mosquitoes and insects, and other “creepy crawlies” from entering the tent. It is also a good idea to switch off all interior lights when going through to dinner. In addition, apply an effective insect repellent at night; wear long-sleeve shirts and trousers at night. Continue to take your malaria tablets after leaving the malaria area for as long as your doctor has recommended. Malaria prophylaxes can be dehydrating and to counteract this and any other side effects we recommend that you eat before taking your tablets and drink suitable amounts of water over the course of the day .

Thank you again for your kind words.

We came to rock tail as the second part to our honeymoon - we arrived and and we greeted by the staff - lovely touch - then we went to be talked through what went on - it was pretty quiet there as it was June but we didn't mind
The staff didn't know it was our honeymoon but when they found out they upgraded us to the honeymoon suite - great touch
Room was great - beautiful view of the forest and the sea and it was very clean
The food was tasty - really like the BBQ night by the pool - beef was yummy
The staff at the hotel were fun, knowledgeable and extremely helpful
So the dive centre ...
We hadn't ever been diving ever before so one day we went snorkelling and on a boat trip - saw some amazing fish and spinning dolphins ! Wow
The next day we went scuba diving and heard a whale and saw just amazing beautiful fish and creatures.
The staff at the dive centre were great - they we knowledgable, caring and very good with me and my husband as we were very nervous. Thank you guys!

If we came back to South Africa again - would defiantly come back!

One thing I would say is that our doctor in the UK said we didn't need malaria tablets but rocktail is in a malaria area, so best to get them!!

Dear Sophieknoxy,

Thank you for the wonderful review, we are so glad we were able to make your honeymoon such a memorable one.

Our Dive centre is certainly a great added activity for guests while in our camp. Situated in a Marine Reserve, which until Wilderness Safaris secured permission to dive here, had never been dived before. We offer small, controlled, exclusive diving – We only operate 2 boats (7 metre zodiacs/semi rigids) with a maximum of 10 divers per boat. We are the only dive centre to launch and operate here, so when we dive, we are truly the only divers on the reefs making this a rare and unique experience. We have a selection of 16 magnificent dive sites ranging from beginner to advanced capabilities.

We are glad we were able to share this special offering with you and your husband, we hope you are able to return to us soon.
The Rocktail Team.

We spent 3 nights at Rocktail celebrating a friends 50th birthday. I sent on ahead dietary requirements and restrictions for my meals. At each meal, there was a special gluten free roll, or wheat free pasta, special desserts, fish without breadcrumbs - the kitchen staff were so accommodating and kind and the food was delicious. Rooms are gorgeous but too hot in summer - too much forest and no breeze unlike the higher rooms.

Room Tip: choose a room with a view which will also get a breeze

Thank you Kaiser08SaltRock_KZN,

We at Rocktail and Wilderness Safaris pride ourselves in fulfilling our guests every need. That is why at first it may seem slightly tedious when your travel agent asks you multiple questions and requests additional information from you, this is all so that we are better able to meet your needs, such as the food and dietary needs.

We have passed your note on to our kitchen staff who are very humbled by your kind words.

Thank you

Rocktail Beach Camp is really a great place to stay. Everybody is super nice and helpful. The rooms are tent-like, nice decoration, all of them with a private deck with forest or ocean view. Big bathrooms, you can take a shower looking at the ocean. Nice pool and place to relax and have a look at nice books. The activities are interesting (snorkelling, turtle tracking, diving) and the beach is beautiful and unspoiled. You can walk - a very nice walk- or drive. Our last night we had dinner under the stars! Fantastic! Excellent experience. Wildernes Safaris does a great remarkable job

The rooms and location were great but when we arrived the place was overrun by unruly children who ran past diners' tables in the evening.

Ambience at the central dining area was lacking. Food very sub-standard for South Africa. Staff friendly enough but more a basic camp for families as opposed to the luxury standard we were lead to believe it was.

A low point on another-wise fabulous holiday.

Also pretty annoyed by the customer service from the dive centre. We were totally mis-sold a trip but at least they came to some agreement on price afterwards. Staff need some training and we felt health and safety at sea was somewhat lacking. We were very glad to get back to dry land.

We have returned home after 3 spectacular days spent at this haven. Every aspect was excellent, from the welcome which created the very pleasant and relaxed ambience for our entire stay. The food was simple and fresh,it all tasted lovely, all the staff are friendly with big welcoming smiles and happy to assist in any way. All our outings were well-guided. We saw turtles laying eggs and walking back into the ocean, wonderful birdlife, our daughter learnt to dive and is now wanting to persue it, my husband snorkelled and swam with dolphins or we lay on a lounger at the pool.

Our room was so lovely too, well done Trevor and his team for all their hard work and passion.

We loved the fact that all the water was drinkable and will use our water bottles with great memories!

Room Tip: We had the honeymoon suite which is a good walk with a brilliant view
