Hats off to &Beyond for creating the Phinda reserve! The concept is working...slowly but surely animal populations are increasing and poaching is slowing, the standard of living is improving in nearby villages, and lucky folks from all over the world are getting a rare glimpse of Eden. Every creature comfort is provided in 6 private lodges and personal preferences and needs are met cheerfully by staff from local communities. There is incredible diversity and variety in ecosystems and wildlife, knowledgeably and passionately presented by expert guides/rangers/trackers (Martin & Muzi were incredible!). Locally sourced cuisine was imaginative, delicious and abundant. Words are inadequate...you just MUST GO!

Room Tip: All are private, quiet, and have oversized K beds and lavish baths/showers. Huge decks with plunge p...

We spent 3 nights here and had the most exciting games drives! Martin, our guide and ranger was so knowledgeable and willing to go to all lengths for us to see beautiful animals.
The food was fantastic and the massage outside a special treat. They had a surprise outside dinner one night in the bush. anything we wanted for breakfast and lunch who can eat so much?
Ask for lodge number 5 and Martin

Room Tip: Select room 5 or 6 for great viewing

We stayed for 2 nights in room 4. The setting is idyllic, overlooking an open plain full of animals and completely hidden from the eyes of other humans, and with a private pool. The staff are very friendly, take excellent care of you, and are extremely knowledgeable about the wildlife. Truly a first class experience.

Room Tip: Room 4 seems to be one of the best.

We stayed for 3 nights. The overall experience was outstanding. The food is excellent and the dinner in the bush on the one night was seriously awesome. My wife celebrated her birthday and they baked her a cake, and on our return to the lodge there was a candle-lit bubble bath waiting for her. Such is the attention to detail. Game viewing was excellent with the big 5 seen by the 2nd day. Lots of close up cheetah. Saw leopard twice. Plus a whole lot more. Sam the guide was very good and delivered on all our requests. We were lucky to have room 6. It is open to the vlei so many animals come down to graze and drink - an elephant came twice to drink from our private pool. There really is nothing negative to report.

Room Tip: Room 6 and 4 are recommended

We just returned from Phinda for a 5 day safari with our family and it was one of our best trips ever. The Vlei Lodge rooms are absolute luxury with our private patios, plunge pools and breathtaking views of the Vlei with the animals coming right up to drink in the pool.

Our guides Ross and Bernard were fantastic, ensuring that we learned about the animals, the eco-systems and really responsive to our kids questions (16 and 12 year old son and daughter).

Douglas was a warm host, Happiness cooked delicious meals every day, accommodating a vegetarian in our family (she should write a cook book) and Precious, Irene and Jabu made us feel at home. I am already thinking about the next time we can return to Africa.

We had an amazing 4 days at Phinda. Everything was professional and personal. Our ranger Ross and tracker Bernard were excellent and our host at the lodge Doug found nothing to be too much trouble. He also put on a great romantic night for my wife an I as we were on honeymoon.ON another night a dinner in the forest was arranged for all guest, eating out under the stars - fantastic

It was my first game reservce experience and i know i will do many more. We saw animals in thier own surrounds and it was all up close and personal. The food was fantastic and i even grabbed a recipe whilst there from Happiness the chef - amazing cook with her team in the kitchen...A trip and experience i will never forget.

Room Tip: room 6 as animals come to the plunge pool to drink on occasion, wart hogs living under deck

From the moment you arrive, you are treated like royalty!!!
Doug and all of the staff are just amazing - I could list so many names ... Sam, Irene, James, Thembe, Happiness (the wonderful chef) ... the list just goes on and on - 5 star service and so friendly as well!!!!!
Game drives were amazing - saw so much: lions and cubs including a huge lioness (240kg!), cheetah, rhino (with babies), elephants, hippo, giraffe, etc. etc.
The rooms are fabulous with wondrous deck and personal plunge pool - Nyala (a type of antelope) drinking from the pool, baboons running through the open plains, impala bringing their young right to the deck at night - just stunning:)
The food is to die for - you may need to go on a diet afterwards ... just so much in the way of incredible options that it was hard not to overindulge - wonderful!
The canoe trip on the river was a highlight - peaceful at dusk - thank James:)
Cannot recommend this place highly enough .... go, enjoy, be spoiled to the nth degree!
