Auldstone House
Reviewed 23 October 2012

Visiting the Auldstone House with the Wild about Whisky bar is our favourite breakaway from the city live... It's always a pleasure, friendly staff, amazing scenery and comfortable units for living...

Always a pleasure!! We go back time and time again...

We stayed in suite 1 at Auldstone House for 3 nights and had the best, most romantic weekend! We were greeted with a warm welcome and our room was great and so cosy, the fireplace is a treat! It's walking distance to everything in town, and conveniently right above Wild About Whiskey...perfect location! Thank you Dullstroom Reservations!

We stayed at Auldstone over a long weekend. The self catering unit was equipped with everything we needed. They even filled the ice cube trays and firewood for the fireplace. A very pleasant stay, nicely decorated place. I would recommend Auldstone to anyone...all in all, a very pleasant stay.

We went to Dullstroom for the weekend and decided to stay at Auldstone House because of its location and the whisky bar. Admittedly, Dullstroom is very small but we enjoyed the location on the main road as this meant we could enjoy a walk up and down the main road looking at the cute shops or at worst a 3 minute drive out to dinner. The whisky bar was a great attraction and their collection of over 800 whiskys is the 2nd largest in the world. Tastings are reasonably priced and Eve, Steve and Dave are very knowledgeable hosts. On a rainy afternoon it was great to just roll upstairs to our room after a few whiskys.

We stayed in room 2 which was large and clean/simply decorated. The fireplace was a hit and we lit a fire on both nights.

The only downside is the main road is a through-fare for trucks so can be a bit noisy. Although this would be said for any place to stay on the main road and I only noticed it after 7.30am and it didn't keep me from falling asleep.

I would stay again mostly due to the great hospitality at the whisky bar and the friendly/knowledgeable hosts.

it may have been us or the bed but we both woke up with chronic back and neck pain. Granted the room was very very cold (no heating in the room) but when we woke up we were sore with aches and pains which i assume is from the mattress and pillows. Location is ok but it is on the edge of the small strip. All in all the hotel is not bad but i probably wouldnt stay again.

My husband and i went to Dullstroom over the weekend so he could do mountain bike training. I was therefore looking for somewhere to relax and read while he was out.

Unfortunately while its mentioned on their website that Auldstone house is on the main road, what you have to realise is that the main road is a truck thoroughfare - it only quietens down at night and on Sunday.

Also, while sitting there on Saturday morning, i received a marketing text message from Auldstone House advertising their whiskey tasting nights. I didn't request marketing messages, or give permission for them to use my mobile number for that purpose. When i mentioned this in a survey i was asked by Auldstone to fill in, i received a prompt reply from Dullstroom Reservations telling me that "More often than not we have guests thanking us for introducing them to such a unique experience, most of our guests are really pleasant." Excuse me!? No, "thank you, noted, we have removed your number from our database". Instead i was told that "most of our guests are really pleasant".

I was also told "you're the first to complain. You can't please all of the people all of the time". If this is what Dullstroom Reservations considers a professional and polite response to legitimate complaints from their guests, they can count on me never returning.

We also saw other places near by that were far more picturesque and relaxing - keep searching.

Dullstroom is a quaint little fishing village, the perfect stop-over between the Kruger Park and Johannesburg. I only stayed one night as I had a flight to catch, but if I'd had the time would have loved to stay longer.

I booked through Dullstroom Reservations, who are extremely helpful and efficient. I told them I wanted somewhere cosy with a fireplace, as it was winter, and they recommended this to me. It was exactly what I wanted. Crisp white linen, spotlessly clean, a fireplace along with wood and charcoal, satellite TV, big bed with electric blankets, bathroom with shower and bath. All for an affordable rate.

As the previous review said, there is no restaurant so you have to drive/walk in to town. The best restaurant there is Mrs Simpsons...but book in advance! And it is closed on a Tuesday.
