“Great animals, great location and lovely people”
Reviewed 24 November 2011

This was my second visit to Ulusaba Game Reserve and it proved again to be a fabulous trip.

Primarily I go on safari for the animals and we saw them in abundance. Large herds of Elephant and Cape Buffalo, White Rhino, Leopards, Lions, Hippos, Zebra, Giraffe, Hyena, Jackal, Impala, Kudu, Waterbuck and great bird spotting, the list goes on.

The Ranger and Tracker were experts in their field and this became important as we had 7 in our truck. Which is too many. The management at Ulusaba were not willing to alter this even though we were promised a maximum of 6 and in my previous trip every game drive was for 4 or 6 people. This was very disappointing as nobody could do 'anything' but actually nobody was willing to do anything. The Ranger dealt with the situation brilliantly and managed to keep our truck of three groups and two languages happy and he found the most breath taking array of animals.
So don't expect private drives. But do expect great game and to be going home with great photographs and memories.

The accomodation is spectacular, great design and location. Rock Lodge has great views across the bush. The rooms are a good size, big bathrooms and balconies. The cleanliness is excellent.

Safari Lodge is in the bush and all the rooms have access to the wandering game. We saw elephants, hippos, antelope and sadly baboons all from our balcony.

The standard of food is excellent with great chefs and exciting menus. It is served in great rooms or settings and delivered in abundance.

It is a superb place to go on safari. The staff are friendly and helpful and seem to really like working there. My only concern was the number of guests in the truck and the lack of management interest in this problem. But Ulusaba deserves it's 5 stars.

Brilliant. Beautiful accommodation, fabulous food, staff that can't do enough for you. Don't hesitate, just go. Management is a husband and wife team, one runs it with his heart and soul, his wife cooks the most wonderful food. Decor in the lodge is in keeping with its setting but very trendy. Game staff great fun, extremely knowledgable.

The safari experience here is amazing. Rangers and trackers are all very highly skilled so we saw incredible animals on every drive. The accomodation, food and other facilities are also excellent. We stayed at Safari Lodge for 2 nights then transferred to Rock Lodge for 2 nights and the whole experience was truely wonderful. All the staff will introduce themselves and remember your name and the hospitality is first class from the charter plane transfer from Johannesburg airport, champagne on arrival to the dinner service, free in room mini bar and sun cream by the pool, we couldnt have asked for more.

Rock Lodge probably edged it for me because I loved our room and the view but my husband preferred being closer to the animals in Safari Lodge.

We have been planning African safari for 2 years. Researched lodges and options.. So glad we chose Ulusaba. Right from the beginning everyone was so helpful. Thanks to Gill for the booking and advice. We stayed 2 nights in Rock Lodge and 2 night at Safari Lodge and am glad we did. Each was unique.
Rock Lodge has amore luxurious feel.. Rooms are large, views are amazing!
Safari Lodge let's you feel like you are in the middle of the action! Elephants strolling by, baboons climbing and impala grazing in front of your eyes.
But, aside from the beautiful rooms, amazing food and wine... It is the people who draw you in and make you feel so at home and like family.
Our ranger Trevor and tracker Sam made our trip. Their knowledge and enthusiasm was infectious.
Only complaint for me was the cost of spa treatments...I totally understand that we are out in the bush, but I thought it was cost prohibited compared to other places we have been. That being said, still could fill our time without using the spa. Did enjoy the yoga though...thanks
Mel!
If you are reading this review..I say GO! You won't regret it.

Room Tip: All the rooms are wonderful... But would advise you to split your time between lodges.

We ended our South African holiday with a four night stay at Ulusaba and it was a great end to an excellent family holiday.

We selected Ulusaba based on the reviews on trip advisor plus it was one of the few "luxury" safari lodges that catered for kids. Based on the Ulusaba web site and the reviews on this site we had expected luxury but although very nice indeed, I would not describe Ulusaba as luxury.

The location is amazing, the views breathtaking and the food good (you seem to eat constantly! The highlight is of course the game viewing and this was first class. The big five were all there (most with kids in tow...WOW!) and we got up close and personal with all of them. The tracker and driver were excellent and found us pretty much everything we wanted to see.

We stayed in the two bedroom rock suite, which was comfortable, clean, spacious and well equipped. The kids room was at the back with no view and only one bed so probably this suite should only be booked for families with young kids that don't mind being in the same bed. We were advised that the main bedroom could be set up with two beds but I cant imagine many parents giving up the master room for their kids. It was interesting for us to note that the one bedroom suite next door to ours was also occupied by a family with two kids, something to think about when booking as it had a plunge pool and better views.

The lodge is nice but in our opinion needs some work, the pool area as an example was disappointing. The pool itself was so cloudy we could not see the bottom. I advised the manager and the next day someone worked on it but all that happened was the water cleared up to reveal all sorts of dirt on the bottom of the pool. The pool loungers are also old, stained and fraying and the pool towels ancient. Not a good look for a "luxury" lodge.

The main lounge and dining area is nice and the bar well stocked and welcoming. The communal dining area is spectacular but of course communal that means who you end up sitting next to for dinner is a lottery, one I did not win on one of the nights! I had two first class back massages in the spa and the kids had the opportunity to go fishing and bake some cookies. Given the blurb on the web site about the cubs club I would have expected a bit more for the kids but they had a good time seeing the animals so were not too worried.

If, like us, you expect the usual Richard Branson luxury then perhaps this place is not for you, but if you want great game viewing, a comfortable bed, good food and wine and a spectacular view then its a great choice.

Possibly the most incredible hotel experience ever. This is Richard Bransons game reserve and getting here is as good as it gets.

From Kruger international airport you are picked up by your own personal private pilot who flies you on a 4 man plane to the reserves private airstrip. You're greeted with champagne and fruit by your guide for your stay and then you jeep ride it to your accommodation and who knows what you'll bump into during the spin!

All meals and drinks are inlcuded in your rate and this includes the very very best of wines and champagnes where you have free reign in the wine cellar. There are no cash tills as everything is included (except spa treatments). The meals are fantastic and you sit out under the stars enjoying good food and wine with new friends.

The Guides are fantastic and will bring you on thrilling bush walks and night drives for close encounters with leopards, elephants, cheetah, rhino etc., The staff are incredible and the whole place is so unpretentious even though you'll possibly be rubbing shoulders with royalty and movie stars.

This is as close to heaven on earth as you can get. It's expensive but I hope some day I'll be able to come back.

What a unique experience. Sir Richard Branson didn't miss a thing at Rock Lodge. It was such a warm and elegant lodge built right into a rock mountain. The accomodations are top notch and the service from everyone was remarkable. The rangers and guides were amazing with their knowledge and skills to track the animals and get you super close for wonderful viewing and pictures. One of the major benefits of a private reserve is they have the ability to drive off the roads(which is were the animals usually are!). They have knowledge of the various plants and trees as well as star constellations to view in the evening. This was the best vacation experience of our lives! Will post photos soon!

Room Tip: Rooms vary greatly in price due to their size. Our opinion is the smaller rooms were the best value...
