We'll seldom enter a restaurant with no clients as we take it as an indicator of the quality. Fortunately we did not stick to our rule! What a delightful culinary experience we had. Michelle had us feeling welcome in no time and it was soon evident that she has a passion for what she is doing.
The tomato, basil and olive bruchetta was delicious. The meat platter for 2 was enough for 3 with meatballs, maroccan chicken, lamb, veggies, tzatziki, homemade bread, etc. And then to top it all the delicious rosewater flavoured ice-cream with seeds.
This was more than lunch on our way to Cape Town. It was a gastronomic experience.
Now we'll have to travel the R62 every time we need to got to Cape Town!

Mez has been a regular for us over the last few years and it has been consistently good. Great food made with love and local ingredients, the lamb is ever popular and never disappoints. This time no exception, we were 6 in our party and we all had wonderful food - I highly recommend it. Michelle puts so much into the whole experience, thank you

A surprising variety with some genuine originals, such as the chef's invention of "karoo sushi" -smoked Springbok Carpaccio wrapped in a layer of Stywe Pap and Seaweed, served with Pickled Ginger and Soya Sauce. The marrow bones were roasted and crusted in black pepper - the best I have had in all my years of seeking out this very South African delicacy. But the highlight of my meal was "Soutribbetjie" (salt-cured Lamb Ribs) - even Karoo home cooks will have to admit that it is the genuine article. The wine list is extensive, and is divided between local (Klein-Karoo) wines and wines from other regions of South Africa.

Mez was recommended to us as "the best in town". Given the modest proportions of Barrydale that left a bit to interpretation. We need not have worried. The food at Mez was incredible, by any standard.

We had the Mez appetizer which is essentially a take on traditional Middle Eastern pre-dinner fare. Quite nice if a bit small.

Entrees were Greek lamb and Moroccan chicken. The Greek lamb was very tender and tasty. But the Moroccan chicken was amazing. Fantasically spiced and perfectly cooked. Yum.

For dessert we had Tiramisu and Rose water ice cream. The Tiramisu was rich and flavorful with nice texture. More unusual was the rose water ice cream. Being more accustomed to smelling rose water than tasting it I was pleasantly surprised. The rose water was frozen with sesame seeds and crumbled over the top. It was crazy good.

We rolled out having had an amazing meal lovingly prepared. Total cost $36.

If you are in Barrydale - go to Mez. You will be delighted.

PS - Mez is unlicensed. If you want wine, beer or spirits you bring your own. Enjoy.

Mez is a gorgeously appointed and cosy little restaurant in the heart of the village of Barrydale. The owner Michelle Berry is usually very busy in the kitchen preparing the amazing food with her hardworking sous chefs, but somehow manages to engage with her clientele too.

Michelle is clearly passionate about her cooking and always does her best to live up to her own very high standards.
The ostrich and sweet muscadel dish was always my favourite with the Greek lamb, a mouthwatering delicacy flavoured with a rosemary and lemon sauce a close second. If you're a fan of ice cream ask if she has any homemade Turkish delight ice cream for dessert, it is divine!

Michelle has paid great attention to detail with everything from the lighting on the ceiling, painted furniture, fresh flowers and candles on the tables, and relaxing music from the Mediterranean region combining to create a moody dining experience that you won't forget in a hurry. If you are searching for a restaurant where you can have a romantic dinner for two, look no further! The ambience really is first class.

If the evening is warm ask to be seated outside where you can be surrounded by the sights and fragrances of the garden.

Whether you are staying for a few nights or just passing through town do yourself a favour and dine at this fine establishment. Mez has never left me feeling disappointed.

Just love it!
