De Kelders Private Villa
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 19 January 2014

We stayed 3 nights at De Kelders Private Villa and it was a perfect pit stop on our way to the Garden Route. Neil, Jess and team have a rare talent of providing warm yet discreet hospitality to their guests. Despite there being other guests, we always felt like we had the place to ourselves. The house is creatively styled with many of Neil’s personal touches. I enjoyed browsing through his vast collection of magazines and coffee table books. Though it looks like a model home, but I was never made to feel uncomfortable about propping my legs on the sofa or spilling a few crumbs here and there. The real highlight of the place is the food. We had 3 superb dinners at the villa which I will never forget. There is something so nice about eating at “home”, especially after constantly eating out at restaurants throughout our trip. I would also like to add that De Kelders, and equally De Kelders Private Villa, isn’t suited for all travellers. If you’re looking for a hotel with a full suite of amenities, or a touristy town full of activity and nightlife, this place isn’t for you. However, if you’re open to simply relax, enjoy Neil’s hospitality and take advantage of the beautiful beaches, nature and marine life only a short drive away, you will certainly appreciate the unique value of De Kelders Private Villa. Neil and Jess are also more than happy to provide suggestions of what to do during the day. I have many fond memories of my stay here – this is a special place!

The house is beautiful. Really inspirational design. Jess was great. The villa was, however, far from private. There was another couple that rented a third bedroom and they were lovely. We were more than happy to share the house with them but the owner of the house, Neil, was around all the time and he was a horrible presence. He was hostile and agressive to deal with- he advertised amentities on booking.com and then refuse us the use of the amenities. He imposed time restrictions for the use of the outdoor patio. We were instructed not to change our baby on the bed but to change him on the vanity which was high, narrow and extremely dangerous. We were not allowed access to the entire kitchen area- we were not even allowed to use the dustbin. Far too many retsrictions. We walked on eggshells and were made to feel like we imposed on his domain. Not a great feeling when paying a high rate for luxury accommodation. The house is also not on the beach- far from it. And one does not have the feel of being at the beachside. There is also nothing to do in the vicinity. Neil recommended a restaurant for new years and all we got was fried samoosas, springrolls and sausage and cheese concoctions on toothpicks. Not our idea of a new year's dinner! An experience entirely lacking in warmth, comfort and hospitality. Will not return or recommend.

Dear Simone

We are a highly rated villa and do not offer self-catering facilities. This was stated to you prior to your arrival. We cook dinners for our guests. Our guests love our food, the design of the villa and the privacy that we offer to the guests that stay in our 3 rooms.

We have numerous glowing reviews on tripadvisor from wonderful guests that love the villa, the staff and the special service that we offer. Your review clearly states that you did not understand the house and your personal attack saddens me.

You made a reservation thru booking.com. Upon reservation I was told that you were bringing a baby with you, I stated that we not allow children in the villa and made an exception for you.

You wanted the third bedroom for the 2 nights of your stay and offered me a discounted rate that I refused. After a flurry of demanding emails, I decided to cancel your reservation with booking.com. I have never had to do this in the 25 years that I have been in the hospitality industry.

You phoned and asked that we re-instate your reservation. I was hesitant, but did so with kindness and guidance about how the house should be used. Explaining again that it was a guesthouse and not a self catering establishment and that we do not offer baby care facilities.

We did offer to cook you dinner on both the nights that you were here. You refused this service. We did offer to make your reservations at nearby restaurants for New Years Eve, you did not respond to my mail.

In the week prior to your arrival I found you a restaurant on the sea front that offered a meal within your budget. I arranged for the best table in the house and for a baby-sitting service at the said restaurant.

You do not mention that we packed you jams and gifts when you departed, neither that we welcomed you with bunches of flowers and home baked treats. You do not mention that I cleaned the kitchen after I kindly allowed you to have a BBQ on the terrace.

We all learn from clients and I have learned a great deal from you.

I wish you kindness, love, respect and honor for the rest of your life.

For our honeymoon we travelled along the Garden Route all the way to Cape Town. We stayed in lots of different places during the trip, but de Kelders Private Villa was our absolute favorite! The beautiful, tasteful interior, the privacy of the house and the hospitality of the whole team were just great. Neil surprised us with a reservation for a whale watching tour as well as organising a very special massage therapist. Together with the great food and the beautiful landscape we had the best time! Hopefully we can visit you soon again!

We spent 3 days of our life in De Kelders Private Villa and it was amazing!!!
The privacy, the well designed interior, the beautiful terrace, the very friendly team, the freshly picked flowers, the homemade food and of course Neil himself made it the best stop of our journey.

De Kelders and its surrounding is perfect to do whalewatching, horseriding and a lot of other activities.

We felt completely shepherded by Neil and the whole team and we want to say a big THANK YOU for that. We really loved it and we will come back for sure.

Greetings to South Africa :-)

Room Tip: Room 1 has a direct access to the poolside and a beautiful bathroom.

Jessica, Neil and team were perfect hosts to my wife and I. We enjoyed two gourmet dinners on the patio, personally served by Jessica, with local Lomond wine. Breakfasts including selections from Neil's special cheese collection and home baked breads were delicious. The house is decorated by Neil with an eclectic mix of furniture, art and objects all making for a space with positive energy.

I'm scoring this wonderful oasis a 5, only because the Trip Advisor scale doesn't provide for a 6.

This little jewel is something truly exceptional. I booked because the photos looked great, which they do, but the truth is they don't come close to conveying what this precious place is all about. The house is, of course, absolutely stunning, because Neil has impeccable taste with which he's melded together the varied and beautiful contents of this house in a magical arrangement that will have you wishing you could bottle up whatever is that gift he's got.

But there's far more to the pure pleasure of this experience than that which meets the eye. Neil's lived and breathed the art of hospitality his whole life, and a visit to this Private Villa allows you to drink at that fountain for a while. And you can tell straight away that the whole team believes in the magic of what they're making - and best of all they quite clearly loved us loving the experience too.

Make sure you eat there when you stay. Again you'll be amazed. In fact we were constantly amazed and delighted at a whole lot of things for three full days. This place is truly special, but that's not by chance. The magic exists because of the people in it; working very hard, with great pride, at things they're very very good at doing.

We loved our time here - only one night but it was lovely. Beautiful spot, very contemporary and attractive furnishings, big space indoors and outside the patio is so tranquil. Gardens all around, lovely grounds, wonderful homemade breakfast and much more. We loved it all. I loved his 2 pet cats who were amazing.
