We read reviews here and decided to go with Ivanhoe over the other whale experiences by boat.

We we're not disappointed!

Ivanhoe did everything they could to make a great experience. From really quick email responses all hours of the night (I had a thread of around 5 email responses around 11pm South African time) To arrival, explanation and the actual tour. Everything was well explained, and we were well taken care of.

We lucked out as there were only two groups (total) on the boat that day, we were 4 little kids plus my wife and I. The other group was a retired couple and their private tour guide. 9 total guests on the boat, plus two Ivanhoe staff. We couldn't have asked for a better situation, nigh unto a private tour!

We were able to see Penguins, Cape Fur Seals, and of course both southern right whales and humpback whales.

However the whales we found on our trip seems to not be interested in us or being on show, so they left. The license that the whale tour boats have limits them from following the whales. So we spent 10 minutes with each whale/group of whales and then moved on. I think we spotted 6 or 7 whales on our two hour trip.

That's the thing about wild animals, no guarantee of a good show, but I'd much rather support tours of wild animals that respect the animals and their environment versus see them at the zoo or an aquarium which are always too small for the animals they have on display.

In short: Go Ivanhoe, a great company and a great experience!

I wanted to offer additional services to our guests at 185 Beach Road Villa and boutique Apartments in nearby Gordon's Bay and decided to first personally 'check out' the facilities of Ivanhoe. I was most impressed by the service, professionalism and was assured of the safety of passengers. Being early in the season I thought we would perhaps see a whale or two. Well, I was sure in for a surprise! We probably saw about 20 whales in different groups, really close up. Even though we were close they seemed not to mind us and they just went about their business while giving us an extraordinary experience. The Ivanhoe team gave us informative information which was certainly interesting. I now feel perfectly confident to offer this service to our guests! Well done and thank you!

The dream came true to see the whales, the weather was a big problem but the Ivanhoe team team were so helpful. They rescheduled the trip several times due to weather, Southern right whales and humpback whales, what a great day.

We chose Ivanhoe because of their smaller group sizes. We have been on many whale watches and our priority was a small group tour that didn’t crowd the boat. Michele was great with answering our questions when we first contacted Ivanhoe. She kept us updated with weather conditions and was helpful with rescheduling our tour due to bad weather.

Our tour had a small group of people and the boat was very comfortable for everyone. The sea was fairly calm so it was easy to hear the whales spouting. Their exhalation is really amazing when they are close to the boat. We saw several mother/calf pairs including a calf that breached several times.

Ivanhoe offered us exactly what we were hoping for - an intimate small group experience with close encounters of the Southern Right Whales.

We had a beautifull experience with this safari. Luckily the sea was calm with light swell. A very capable crew tells the guests all about the whales and approaches them with respect. We saw almost 10 whales on our two hour plus trip and got a group of dolphins as nice extra. Woww effect when you hear a whale breathing out so close. Tip for a nice place to stay is 'on the rocks' b&b just around the corner with a breath taking sea view and friendly hosts.
