“Botanical treasure”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 April 2014

This place is lovely to see the natural botanical beauty of this part of the world. You can venture on horseback with a lovely guide, Sam, or in a 4x4, and I highly recommend Jo. She is a delight, and very passionate. She made the stay there for us. A lovely woman, and a character! The accommodation is a little tired but charming in its way. The food was ok despite the claims it is wonderful. The staff are not sincere, and rather pushy, although Yolande was wonderful. She stood out amongst them, and too bad all were not like here. A nice change from the animal safari. The grounds are lovely.

Dear Las-monteal- Canada

Thank you for your comments. We are thrileld to hear that you enjoyed the reserve and the natural wonders fo the area. I'll be sure to pass on your comments to Sam, Jo and Yolande who will be delighted to hear that you enjoyed their company. I appreciate, too, your comments on the food and the room. We are busy with a soft refurbishment of Garden Lodge and I'm sure the areas of concern in your suite will be rectified during this process.

Kind Regards

Sean

We stayed at the Forest Lodge as part of the SecrectEats experience for one night.
What a wonderful experience!!! The view, the food and the staff was the best ever. Will I come back, yes!!!

The rooms does need a bit of TLC. The wood got damaged due to the sun and the grouting between the tiles needs some maintenance.

Dear Secreteats

I'm so glad to hear that you enjoyed magical evening with the rest of your Secreteats party. It was truly a magical evening. Thank you for your comments on the rooms. You'll be glad to know that we are currently sprucing up all our cottages as part of our soft refurbishment. All floors are being re-sanded and sealed and the showers are being re-tiled too. I hope we'll see you back very soon.

We stayed at the Forest Lodge for 1 night, and we would have loved to postpone our flight back home as soon we entered the Nature Reserve. Service was amazing from the minute we arrived at the parking lot until we left again. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included and very delicious. We stayed at no. 24, a very spacious cottage with living-room, bedroom, two bathrooms and a wonderful terrace. The view over Walkers Bay from our terrace as well as from all the rooms is breathtaking. We enjoyed our stay immensely, and we hope to be back for whale season.

Dear ClaudiaF

You definitely have to come back! One night is just to short to appreciate everything on offer at Grootbos. Thank you though for including us in your itinerary. We'll have room 24 waiting for you on your next stay (and hopefully some whales too!).

The proprietors of Grootbos plow the profits into preserving the local fynbos biome and providing training to local young people in a variety of jobs ranging from naturalist to waiter. The rooms in the hotel are built to enhance a feeling of being in a cottage separate from any other building. The views of the ocean are panoramic. The hotel facilities are top flight. It is fun to deal with the wait staff trainees, they are anxious to please, if not always fully aware of the menu. The restaurant menu was hit or miss, sometimes excellent, sometimes barely edible. There is little to do on-site at the hotel, but various guided walks and ocean adventures are offered. The walks are free, the events involving vehicles or boats have a fee. The common areas invite one to read a book while looking out over the fynbos preserve. Grootbos is perfect if you are looking for a luxury, nature retreat.

Dear Southwind3

I'm so glad to hear that you appreciated the efforts we put into giving back to the local communities through the Grootbos Foundation. It's such a vital part of our business and we are very proud our achievements. Many of the students from the on-site colleges come to work at Grootbos after their graduation and in order to facilitate their personal growth, we do expose them to various areas around the lodges including our dining service. Thank you for your patience and understanding when dealing with these students. It goes a long way to boost their confidence.

I'm glad to hear that you decided to skip the activities on site. Sometimes taking a walk through the Milkwood Forest, a treatment at the spa or even a horseride on the reserve is far less important than enjoing a good book on your deck overlooking the bay.

Best Regards

Sean

We were at the Forest Lodge for 3 nights. It topped our expectations in different kind. First of all the view from the main building and the spacious rooms over Walkers Bay is just breath-taking. You can sit in the bathtub, having a drink whist watching the beautiful landscape. The rooms in the lodge are more like villas in which you have free wifi, reasonable priced drinks, refreshments, snacks and all kind of amenities you would expect. The restaurant is a real gourmet place. There is always a choice of menus but also a la carte dishes are available. We actually had our best beef fillet ever there. Last but not least the Guides were top professionals providing us with most interesting background information but they were also very funny and we laugh a lot.

Thank you for visting us! I'm so pleased to here that you enjoyed your stay. I agree- the bathtubs are the best place to watch the sun setting over Walker Bay. Add a glass of sparkling wine and you're in heaven! I'm delighted to here that you had so much frun on your excursions with our guides. These moments make the memories that you'll treasure when thinking back to your time in South Africa, I hope we'll see you again.

My husband and I had a lovely stay at this magical resort. Our suite was bigger than the ground floor of our house in London. We loved the bath overlooking the bush and the huge veranda. I lost Martin in the bed and we loved having a fire in the living room. The staff are welcoming and knowledgeable. The food was good and the service diligent and pleasant. The star attraction though is the reserve itself which I had the pleasure of exploring on horse back with the excellent staff from the stables. It is spectacular country side and that says a lot from an Irish woman from Wicklow, the garden of Ireland. I also fulfilled a life long dream to cage dive with sharks which was incredibly exciting. On our final day we took a boat trip to see the sharks, whales and seals of Gaansbai which confirmed this as one of the most beautiful and exciting places I have ever visited. We will be back.

Dear Niamh G

Thank you for your super review! It was our absolute pleasure to host you and your husband. The baths are one of our best features, whether you are sipping spakling wine in it as the sun sets on a glorious summers eve or you fill it with bubbles and watch the wild weather battering the Bay outside on colder days- it really can be a sublime experience. I'm delighted to hear that you had such memorable experiences on the boats and on horseback. I'll be sure to give them your feedback.

Although it has taken me a while to write this, I can still remember the feeling of calm and relaxation that came over us on arrival at Grootbos. As a party of 9 with various ages we could have presented a challenge but our welcome meeting determined that our stay for the next 48 hours was going to be 'Perfect' for all. It was! The wine cellar and dining provided the entertainment for the big kids, the horse riding, tours and farm for all of the others. We very much look forward to having the opportunity to return and would not hesitate recommending this to anyone. We loved it! If I had to be fussy, it does not have a gym, but then that means you just have to enjoy the surroundings...

Dear NikkiBasham

As you will know, if your kids are happy, you are happy! I'm so glad they took advantage of the range of kids activities. The young girls generally veer towards the stables, some spending the whole day there with our stable guides, assisting them with the daily duties. It's a young girls dream!

I hope you'll return again soon, next time hopefully you won't have to leave so early in the morning. There's always time for a post breakfast horseride!
