We had 3 nights in a suite in the Forest Lodge at Grootbos in early June. The suite was very spacious with a large bedroom, a large living area, a huge main bathroom and a smaller second bathroom. All very comfortable. The heated flooring and the fireplace were welcome features (especially when the weather turned cold, wet and very windy).
The main building, housing the restaurant, bar, gift shop and lounge areas, was also large and comfortable, furnished in a low-key modern style and it afforded wonderful views out over the fynbos and looking towards the coastline.
The quality of the food in the restaurant was excellent. While the wine list prices may be expensive by South African standards, it did not seem so by international (i.e. Australian) standards.
The staff we encountered (in reception, the restaurant and the guides) were without exception happy, courteous, helpful and knowledgeable. The botanical knowledge of some of the guides was extraordinary. It was also worthwhile to learn of the training and employment opportunities offered to the young people in the local area, and to see their own on-site nursery involved in the propagation of native plants.
We availed ourselves of many of the activities offered by the lodge including the milkwood forest walk, the fynbos drive and the beach cave visit. These are of relatively short duration and are worthwhile. Unfortunately the strong on-shore winds caused cancellation of all boating activities in early June, so it was not possible to go out looking for whales and other marine creatures.
As a stopover on a driving holiday, 2 full days spent here would probably be enough to take in most of the local attractions. I would be happy to stay here again and return at a later time of year when more of the fynbos is in bloom and when the boats are able to go out for whale watching.
