Total luxury close to Cape Town. We had 2 nights in a suite in the main forest lodge - mid June - Winter. We have spend many a weekend away from Cape Town and this stands out amongst great competition. The morning activity drive through the fynbos was wonderful. Views outstanding and food / service to match. Spoil yourself. Not cheap but worth it.

Room Tip: All good; great views especially from the suites

Dear Scottrekker

This winter has truly been spectacular! The floral display on the reserve is currently at it's peak so you really did choose a perfect time for a visit. We sincerely hope to see you back again soon.

We had 3 nights in a suite in the Forest Lodge at Grootbos in early June. The suite was very spacious with a large bedroom, a large living area, a huge main bathroom and a smaller second bathroom. All very comfortable. The heated flooring and the fireplace were welcome features (especially when the weather turned cold, wet and very windy).
The main building, housing the restaurant, bar, gift shop and lounge areas, was also large and comfortable, furnished in a low-key modern style and it afforded wonderful views out over the fynbos and looking towards the coastline.
The quality of the food in the restaurant was excellent. While the wine list prices may be expensive by South African standards, it did not seem so by international (i.e. Australian) standards.
The staff we encountered (in reception, the restaurant and the guides) were without exception happy, courteous, helpful and knowledgeable. The botanical knowledge of some of the guides was extraordinary. It was also worthwhile to learn of the training and employment opportunities offered to the young people in the local area, and to see their own on-site nursery involved in the propagation of native plants.
We availed ourselves of many of the activities offered by the lodge including the milkwood forest walk, the fynbos drive and the beach cave visit. These are of relatively short duration and are worthwhile. Unfortunately the strong on-shore winds caused cancellation of all boating activities in early June, so it was not possible to go out looking for whales and other marine creatures.
As a stopover on a driving holiday, 2 full days spent here would probably be enough to take in most of the local attractions. I would be happy to stay here again and return at a later time of year when more of the fynbos is in bloom and when the boats are able to go out for whale watching.

Dear Graham

I appreciate your very detailed and honest review. You've certainly managed to encapsulate all the elements of Grootbos and I'm very happy that you got to experience so much of what we have on offer. We would love you to return someday to partake in the whale watching and floral excursions.

Grootbos Forest Lodge has a great number of things in its favor: amazing fynbos, friendly and competent staff and proximity to Gansbaai's whale watching and shark diving opportunities. It is a pity that it does not meet expectations. Saying this, we enjoyed our stay but will not return.

We were welcolmed at our vehicle on arrival and escorted to lunch while the luggage was whisked away. (There is no undercover parking.) The friendly staff immediately made us feel at home and we sat down to an appetizing lunch with a beautiful view. This was spoiled by the jaw dropping prices of the wine list: e.g. a local Syrah (available on the estate 20 min away) was priced at 300% markup! I know that hotels and restaurants have to stock wine etc and that this involves a certain amount of cost, BUT 300%?

After lunch we were escorted to our suite. The walk to the suite is through a beautiful small forest on a cobbled pathway. The suite itself is a comfortable size but the finishes are below expectation. The underfloor heating in the bedroom and bathroom were faulty and one light switch did not work.

The staff really went to great lengths to explain all the activitties and helped us to enjoy our stay.

My big problem with Grootbos is that it really is not like the videos on the website. It is still a great destination but I think very overpriced for what it offers - if you take away the whales and sharks you only have the views and the fynbos and an expensive but average lodge.

Room Tip: At the Forest lodge try to get rooms 21 - 28 in the forest. Some rooms are really not forest suites.

Dear The2Gourmets

Thank you for your comments. We are obviously diappointed to hear that some of your expectations were not met during your stay with us. We have rectified the faulty underfloor heating and light switch that you have brought to our attention. I would appreciate any further comments or critism on the finsihes that you felt were below your expectation. Please feel free to contact me directly at seani@grootbos.co.za.

While it is standard practice to mark up wine for consumption in any 5 star hotel, it is not our goal to inhibit the sale of the wine through the pricing thereof. We appreciate your comments on this and will review our pricing structure and make necessary adjustments where we feel wines are over-priced.

Grootbos was absolutely wonderful from the moment we entered the lobby until we sadly had to leave. Everyone made us feel right at home and anticipated our every need. We did the Fynbos tour, shark diving and planted a milkwood tree in the Fynbos forest. The food was delicious and variety was adequate. The rooms were spectacular, spacious, with fires lit for us each evening, canopy bed and spacious bathroom with soaker tub built for 2. Very romantic. Cannot say enough about the staff, accomodations, services and the food.

We were blown away by Grootbos. Every aspect of the Forest Lodge was simply outstanding, from the warm staff, to the unbelievably spacious and comfortable chalets, the fantastic meals (honestly, the food here rates among the best we've ever had), and the enjoyable activities. We went horseback riding twice with Sam, who was a delight to get to know. Next time we'll have to stay longer to further improve our riding. The views toward the ocean and the situation of the lodge amid the fynbos are stunning.

This is someplace where we would happily come back to for a couple of days on our next trip to South Africa.

Dear jiaotze

Thank you for your review. We are thrilled that you enjoyed your stay. Riding on the reserve at the moment is just beautiful. We've had a few good rain showers so the reserve is looking magnificent. We can't wait to get your out again to experience the wonder of the area on horseback again.

Grootbos is jaw droppingly beautiful. Getting to the lodge you drive along the fabulous South African coast line. You then turn into a fynbos forrest and drive up a hill where you emerge into a small parking lot. Walking through the parking lot you find a modern, sleek entry way that opens into a dining room with sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean. When I walked in the front doors I stopped for a minute. It's one of the more beautiful views I have seen in my life.

The rooms are similarly elegant and all have ocean views. The rooms are set on the side of a hill with the decks and bedroom windows facing the ocean with no buildings between you and the water. The other rooms are to the side of your cottage, so you will never see or hear the other guests. The experience is peaceful and private.

The food and service are top notch. I was also pleased with their selection of farm fresh produce and meat. You leave every meal just the right amount of full and feeling like you tasted a bunch of unique foods. You never feel stuffed and you never feel bogged down by heavy or unhealthy food. This makes all the outdoor experiences even more enjoyable.

Activities are the highlight of Grootbos. There is something for everybody. We went shark diving, ATV riding, and hiking all in two days. You can also ride horses, whale watching tours, wine tours, and take driving tours. This is a great destination for the luxury, adventure, and relaxation traveler. I went here with my family. We all have different tastes, but every one of us felt like there was at least one activity that fit our interests. This is a great place for groups and families for that reason.

Our guide, Clayton, was fantastic too. He was funny, witty, and engaging. He added to our holiday in a very positive way. The rest of the staff was similarly friendly and open. I had a number of great conversations there.

Overall, fantastic place and unique experience.

Room Tip: All the rooms are fantastic. You can't go wrong.

We stayed in the Garden Lodge (family friendly) and had a beautiful (very large) cottage overlooking gardens all the way to the ocean. The staff at Grootsbos took every opportunity to ensure that we enjoyed every minute of our stay. Kevin, Lindy, Natasha, Yolande and Clayton (also many many more) planned special events for us and gave such personal service. We felt like we were guests of special friends. The sundowners oceanside were awesome! Every meal was a delicious work of art! Thank you all for an unforgetable experience!
