We visited Bartholomeus Klip for a couple of nights in April and it has to be one of the best places I have ever stayed! We particularly liked all the small touches such as the fresh herbs left on the pillows, the small decanters of sherry/port left on the dressing table and the little silver water jugs placed around the tables on the veranda.

We went out on the morning & evening game drives and finished up one magical evening parked up on the plains, a trestle table out drinking
sparking wine, surrounded by wildebeest/springbok/zebra and watching the sun set over the mountains that lie at the back of the property.

The food is superb, rooms cosy and staff friendly & attentive. This a place to really relax, whether you take a boat out on the lake, walk about the reserve or simply sit back in the lush gardens. We especially liked the fact that you have to drive down a dirt track for 8-9 kms before you reach the property really makes it feel like you are getting away from everything!

Our three day stay here was a simply superb end to our South African holiday. We had booked the "wild olive" house as the main hotel does not accept children. This is a really nice house with its own pool and verenda set just to one side of the main property. Beautifully furnished in a relaxed 'country living' style there were many nice touches such as locally made soaps, intersting books and a log fire [we were there in August which is early spring in that part of world]. Although Olive House is well equipped for self catering, part of the reason for staying at Bartholomeus Klip is the good food and we had arranged for all meals to be provided.

This turned out to be a brilliant option with excellent food being ferried to and fro the house by friendly staff at regular intervals. It was all home made and very, very, tempting indeed. In addition the house was stocked with home made biscuits, shortcake, fresh bread and milk, juices, coffee etc. The veranda was furnished with whicker chairs etc. and the peace of sitting looking at the views and taking in the surroundings was sheer bliss. As if all this was not enough there were also bikes, canoes [there is a damn the other side of the hotel] etc available and game drives thrown in. We saw wildebeests, zebras, bonteboks etc, hundreds of birds and flowers all in a georgeous african landscape. Our twelve year old son thought it was simply great. Only a little over and hour from cape town and stunningly cheap by UK standards this place is unreservedly recommended.

If you get a chance to chill out away from the usual tourist route consider this wonderful retreat.

A small hotel, no "country house" set in a private Game reserve (antelope of multiple kind, zebra, tortoises, ostriches, buffalo) in a beautiful setting, with only a few rooms, where the staff treat you like both Kings and friends.

You can be as active or as lazy as you like. Game drives (not the Big 5, but fascinating nevertheless) twice daily, walk, cycle, swim, fish, canoe ... or a big fat nothing of lying on a lounger in their immaculate gardens with a quick dip in their lovely pool every now and then.

Attentive yet not intrusive service. Food was great with non resident locals turning up in the evening for a "treat". Breakfast a highlight with massive spread; high tea and pre dinner drinks and nibbles included. Oh and a glass of sherry placed in your room pre dinner and port there after.

We had the Suite for 1 of our 2 nights and it was well worth the small extra price.
