“Paying for proximity to Carlsbad Caverns and not much else”
Reviewed 14 May 2014

The best I can say for this place is that sheets were clean and the shower water was hot. Not much ambiance -- the main decorative feature of the lobby was a well-used fly strip. You are basically paying somewhat dearly for the privilege of being close to Carlsbad Caverns and Guadalupe Mountains NP, and staying at the Rodeway is worth the privilege.

This is your basic, clean, roomy Rodeway Inn. No frills. Price is inflated due to regional oil boom ($90-95/night). As of this date it is the only motel/hotel open in town. Within 1/4 mile of entrance to Carlsbad Carern. There is no reason not to stay here. The next chain motel is 15+ miles away and $50 more per night.

We stayed here for the reason most tourists stay here - proximity to the Caverns.

Our room was enormous. The beds in the room were great. The provided toiletries were standard Rodeway toiletries (ie. ultra economy). The air conditioning was superb. The room was very clean.

The room included the best mini fridge I have ever had in a hotel - stainless steel, with a separate freezer compartment with it's own door! It was a perfectly shrunken version of a full size refrigerator. Which was great, I had freezer packs to freeze for my cooler, and the separate freezer compartment did the job perfectly.

It's true there is no provided sit-down breakfast, but since we wanted to get to the Caverns early, I did not mind this. I liked being able to grab some cartoned juice, fruit and cello-wrapped muffins, to consume in the car as we drove to the Caverns. It worked out very well.

There isn't much to do in Whites City ... it is not a city, not even a town. In reality, Whites City is comprised of this hotel, two closed hotels, a gas station/quickie mart, one restaurant, and a gift shop. We knew this in advance, and brought food with us. The location was super peaceful, which was not a bad thing at all to experience for a night on our 1000+ mile road trip.

The hotel staff was friendly, efficient, a pleasure to interact with. You pay for location, in this case I felt it was money well-spent. The cost did push us to stay only one night ... we would have stayed 2 nights, if the price per night was lower.

Note 1, We drove through the town of Carlsbad after concluding our visit to the Caverns, and we felt very happy we did not stay in Carlsbad. There is an oil boom going on, and the whole town of Carlsbad seems to smell vaguely of crude oil (the stuff is trucked through or very near town essentially constantly). And the traffic lights seem deliberately non-synchonized.

Note 2, We approached the Caverns area from the west - El Paso. I recommend fueling up and taking a rest room break in El Paso. After you depart El Paso, you drive for 100+ miles without encountering a single place to stop (except perhaps a roadside boulder ...).

After checking out prices in Carlsbad we decided to stay here in Whites City. The people in the office were very friendly and in the morning they had good coffee, juice and packaged muffins that my daughter and husband thought were very good. The room was nice and big. It included and microwave and refrigerator. The wall paper was all bubbled on the wall otherwise the room was in good repair. My biggest problem with the hotel was the beds were so hard that none of us got a good nights. sleep.

This hotel is outside the entrance to Carlsbad Caverns. All other hotels one might stay in for the Caverns involve a good half hour ride to the Caverns in the morning. . We checked in and when we were about to enter our room, we heard a dog yapping in the next room. We then heard a cow mooing nearby. This place IS remote so perhaps one should accept animals nearby. Anyway we went to change our room and luckily, since it was not high season, they had another available. But the desk guy made the wrong key twice and we had to return twice. This is really a motel, with outside stairs and no elevator. The room was large and had most amenities (no conditioner, just shampoo), but it was so shabby: sheets seemed used 1000 times, faded ugly old bedspreads, torn fabric on box springs hanging on the floor, and the window curtain had a ripped off hem. They had a fairly decent continental breakfast in the lobby, which you take to your room. The rate is pretty cheap but you get what you pay for. The place has seen better days. I repeat-you stay here because you get an early start to the Caverns. In the morning we were glad.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back may have farm animals nearby. Near the street might be hectic in the summer when t...

I was a little worried after reading some of the Trip Advisor reviews, but this Rodeway Inn was perfect for our needs. We were close to Carlsbad Caverns and the price was right. We were checked in by an older gentleman, given what turned out to be an accessible room on the first floor, and it was great! Super quiet, super clean, lots of hot water and towels. Not luxury by any stretch, but there were plenty of pillows and the mattress appeared to be a brand new, pillow top mattress. We also had a small table with 2 chairs, and a microwave, coffee maker and a refrigerator with freezer. We knew that breakfast was muffins and juice, but when we went to check out, we saw they also had fruit (apples, oranges, bananas). We were very pleased with our stay and would stay here, again, in a heartbeat! I wish we'd stepped outside in the late evening to look at the sky, bet we'd have seen tons and tons of stars, because there's not a lot (else) in this area.

I did a lot of research for hotels near Carlsbad Caverns before I left for my vacation, and the one thing I discovered from TA reviews was that the hotels in the city of Carlsbad were quite pricey. The one and only hotel closest to the caverns is the Rodeway Inn in Whites City. This is not a deluxe property, and if you have stayed at Rodeways in other places, you can expect that this place is much like the others. It is not new and shows a little bit of wear. However, the room size (if you stay on the second floor) is great and the staff (Coretta) was pleasant and very helpful. The pool was not yet open for summer use (we were there at the end of March). Breakfast is muffins, juice and coffee, and there is not much else in Whites City if you want something more. However, there is a restaurant in the visitor center at Carlsbad Caverns if you really are hungry. We left the Rodeway about 10 minutes to 8 and arrived to the visitor center a little after opening. Perfect timing - we pretty much had the caverns to ourselves. I would definitely stay at this motel again if I ever get the opportunity to return.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the second floor.
