I have never been a fan of camping but I must say that I became used to this form of glamping within a couple of hours of arriving at camp.
Having read some of the reviews for this place, it would definitely be unfair to compare this with other & Beyond lodges in Africa and South Asia. We must understand that when we are camped in the middle of a national park, there are certain limitations that they will be unable to get around.
The tent had a decent bed, a fully functional toilet, a makeshift shower with suspended bucket set-up and a simple cleaning area.
Make sure you zip up the tent as soon as come and go and spray the "room" with insect disinfectant unless you would like those creepy crawlies everywhere! Keep in mind that snakes also roam the area!!
Thank you to Blue and his staff for making us feel safe and content with residing inside a national park! By seeing our clothes on the clothesline and preparing everything on an open fire pit, we knew that we had to forgo Western comforts for the next three days. At first, I thought it would be a real problem but we got into our routine as soon as we finished our first lunch at the campsite.
A huge thanks to Max (ranger) as well for making the most of our game drives! He actually managed to show us all of the animals found in the park and to a degree that far surpassed what we found at Sabi Sand Game Reserve in South Africa! Besides his wonderful tracking skills, he was also a very sincere and considerate individual and treated my family with respect and dignity.
Furthermore, unlike other & Beyond locations, food options are very limited but the staff prepares very simple dishes that anyone would enjoy no matter your dietary restrictions or concerns. On our last day at the camp, the cook prepared us a full English breakfast with all of the trimmings. Because they were so observant during our entire stay, they noticed that my mom did not touch the lamb stew and steak options during dinners on two separate nights, so they grilled some chicken for her to replace the sausage for her English breakfast platter. Although everything is quite limited at camp, the staff did not cut corners or use substandard products to diminish the overall camping experience.
I'm not sure if camping at a national park will make another appearance in my future, but I can happily report that & Beyond Chobe Under Canvas has made me a fan of camping, something that would have been considered a tall order a couple of months ago!
