“You will love this place if you love elephants!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 June 2014

My husband and I went to Ngoma for our honeymoon, and it was the last place we visited on our trip.

Our travel agent sent us to Ngoma Lodge in Botswana because elephants are my favorite animal, and Botswana is known for having an abundance of them. Sure enough, there was (literally) tons of them, everywhere we went. So many elephants to see, it was great!

The staff was very friendly and accommodating.

The room was very nice, cozy, and had a great view, however don't expect to see anything at night, as the lighting everywhere is very dim. The room was always clean and comfortable. One minor note is that as of this writing, the lodge doesn't have a telephone system, so there's no way to call the main lodge or other rooms. Since it is dangerous to walk alone at night (There is no electrical fence surrounding the camp), the only way to get a hold of anyone in an emergency is via the air horn canister included in each room.

The food was was pretty good; it didn't blow us away, but we really had no complaints, and we were always full.

The game drives were fun. However the first full day was very long. Starting around 8am and ending at 6pm. We drove in a canvas topped land rover for two hours in the cold to go on a river safari. The river safari was really cool, and we got to see the game from a different perspective; like seeing elephants swimming in the water. It just took way too long to get there. The staff said they are working on changing the location of their boat dock, and trying to get a more direct access to the park, but since the camp is only 3 years old, these things take a lot of time and paperwork to get moving.

After the river safari, which ended around noon, we started our game drive back through the park to the camp. We stopped around 2:30pm for lunch and then continued on our safari after that. We saw lots of animals including: lions, hippos, cape buffalo, giraffes, lots of different kinds of birds, and, of course, elephants.

The staff made our honeymoon extra special. When we got back to our room after our game drive, we were greeted by flower petals on our bed and a trail of flowers that led to the bath tub which was already drawn up for us along with a bottle of champagne and grass rings that were made by one of the local villagers.

We definitely recommend staying here, however if you come in the winter be sure to dress appropriately for the long drives in and out of the park.

Ngoma is one hour drive away west from Kasane. It's superbly situated overlooking the Chobe river and on the other side of the river is Namibia.
After you're welcomed by the most friendly and helpful staff, you enter the open reception area. And that moment you'll never forget in your life! Jaw dropping!! That means the lodge AND the view over the river!! I mean REALLY!
Your room is a little house with a thatched roof. Large and beautifully decorated. And again the view!!
About the food I can tell ypu one thing: I wanted to take the cook back home with me!
About our driver KJ: really friendly, calm, very high level of knowledge, and I'm thankful to him for the rest of my life because with his personality and his knowledge he managed to help me get over a bad elephant experience 8 years ago. Now I'm (almost ;-)) totally relaxed near elehpants.
About John and Babs, the managers: at one (only one!!) point I was dissapointed because a visit to the nearby village and school was re-scheduled to the afternoon because the others (you have to share your driver with other guests) did not really feel like going there and wanted a long drive instead. But in the afternoon the kids have no school. Babs and John did the utmost to make up for that. On my return to the room I was surprised to find a bottle of champagne and two glasses!
And last but not least the safari experience. Otherwise like in South- Africa there are no fences here and driver/trackers don't carry rifles. So that is much more the real safari thing! We also did a cruise on the Chobe river. A MUST DO! You'll get very close to hippos, swimming and bathing elephant, crocodiles, lizzards. An amazing feeling!

Room Tip: We had room 2 and had a beautiful view on the waterhole.

From the warm welcome by both hosts Babs and John and their wonderful staff, to my delightful guide Bevan, to the gorgeous views from the spectacular rooms, nothing was wanting at Ngoma. My journey from the airport at Kasane gave me my first experience of the multitude of animals at Chobe National Park with an elephant greeting me from the roadside, and a sighting of a gorgeous sable.

Ngoma Lodge offers spectacular views along with great food, great staff and great guides. I appreciated the care shown to me as a solo traveller that I never sat alone for a meal.

My guide Bevan was fantastic - his knowledge was vast and his ability to spot animals from such distances or so camouflaged amazed me. His love for the Baobab tree is something I will remember.

Dining at Ngoma was beyond my expectations, very high quality and just lovely. Lots of options at all meals, good quality spirits and wines.

I was staying in room 8 which is furthest from the main lodge. As a solo traveller, I probably would have preferred being closer, but given that we had lovely guards to escort us to and from our rooms once night fell, there really was no problem. The rooms are very well appointed with comfortable beds, and big beautiful windows looking down over the plain in front of the lodge to the Chobe River.

The full day trip of game drive, lunch and river cruise was my highlight. We got so close to elephants on the river that I almost got scared but at the same time was so exciting. Watching the old bull elephants in the reed beds on the island was also a highlight. We also were very lucky to see a pack of wild dogs, something that hadn't been seen for quite a long time.

Thank you Babs, John, Bevan, Chaz, Eva, Dignity, Hope and everyone else. I loved my stay and would come back in a heartbeat.

This was the 2nd of 4 Lodges/Camps on this trip. If you love elephants, then this is the perfect lodge for you! We did see quite an assortment of animals, but the elephant encounters were the most memorable. Our Managers/Hosts were Babs & John, and our stellar guide was KG (worth 5+ stars in my book!). The staff was wonderful, and the chef (Samson) was a genius in the kitchen…if Samson makes Butternut Squash Cappuccino soup while you are there….thank your lucky stars, and enjoy!! The river-facing suites are quite large, and all have an outdoor shower and a plunge pool overlooking the river, and the rainforest shower in the indoor bath feels heavenly after a long day outside! Available activities include day & night game drives, and river safaris, which makes for a nice mix of game/bird viewing opportunities. My only suggestion for Ngoma would be to include a couple of beers in the in-room refrigerator, though I did love the tea kettle and selection of hot teas! Insider tip….if you are traveling alone, ask for a suite close to the lodge…it will make you feel a bit more connected and safe at night.

We spent 4 incredible nights at Ngoma in early March. From the first welcome to the time of departure we were treated with much care and attention. The hospitality of Babs & John (and their staff) is something you rarely find these days. The finest hosts indeed. You cannot truly appreciate the beauty of the lodge until you see it for yourself. Pictures do not do it justice. No detail is overlooked in the large suites that are very comfortable and quite luxurious. Meals were some of the best we had during our 25 days in South Africa, Botswana and Zimbabwe. Our guide for the 4 days was Bevan. He was superb in making us comfortable and was great at tracking. He took us on a day long trip out to the Savuti where we had the wonderful experience of enjoying lunch beside a watering hole with zebras, warthogs and elephants all nearby. It was a trip of a lifetime!
Thanks to all at Ngoma Lodge for giving us such wonderful memories to treasure.
Mark & Cindy Wiggins

Room Tip: There are no bad rooms or locations. All are stunning and private.

Hard to find, but once you're there it's a little piece of heaven on earth. John and Barbara, the hosts, are wonderful, friendly, knowledgeable and professional. It's almost like being with old friends. The lodge is superb, the food excellent, the ambiance unrivaled. If you want to be spoiled and see the best of the Chobe reserve, this is the place to visit

We had a wonderful experience at Ngoma Safari Lodge with our needs anticipated and met at every turn from meals, beverages and safaris to beautifully washed and pressed laundry. The managers John and Babs made every effort to ensure that our stay was safe, pleasant and memorable. We went for amazing safaris each day at the Chobe National Park and saw a wide array of animals, birds and reptiles. In addition, the view from our suite was breath-taking and unforgettable.

Room Tip: We had suite no.1 which was more private and 3 suites away from the main lodge.
