“Magical!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 August 2012

Chobe Chilwero is WONDERFUL!!!! 5 Star Service! Gorgeous accomadations! Excellent staff! From the moment we were greeted at the door by our wonderful hostess named Brenda, we felt like we had just landed in paradise! Everyone was soooo friendly! They were so genuine in their efforts to please us and make sure that every request was accommodated. The safari's that we experienced on the river were by far the most spectacular of all our trip. Herds of elephants crossing the river with the babies being pushed along by their mothers is an indescribable experience that if possible you must witness in this lifetime! We Loved every second of our stay here and would HIGHLY recommend this lodge as a MUST visit destination. It was so fun!!! And, beautiful!!! And we absolutely LOVED the staff at Chobe Chilwero. We took our kids 13 and 16 and they both said it was the best vacation we have ever taken!!! The rooms are beautifully decorated and extremely well appointed with exceptional amenities! 5 STAR!!!

Room Tip: Every room is BEAUTIFUL!!! You cannot go wrong!

We just spent 2 nights at Chobe Chilwero as part of a 2 week Africa vacation. The service and accommodations were outstanding. They have thought of everything, even greeting you after each game drive with cold or warm washcloths for your face, depending on the weather. The food is 5 star and you can eat 4 times a day if you wish. There is a focus on privacy and you can be there and never interact with other guests if you choose. The game guide we had was terrific and extremely knowledgeable.the only down side was that Chobe is a national park, so there are a lot of game vehicles with overnighters and day trippers. If you want an high end safari experience, including a river safari, this is it!

Room Tip: All rooms are equally good inside. I'd choose either the 2nd or 3rd one from the lodge.

At the prices charged I was expecting first rate rooms/chalets and good service. While the rooms were exceptionally nice and spacious the quality of the cuisine was far below the standard I expect in similarly priced establishments in Botswana and Southern Africa generally and the service in dinning room was indifferent at best and at times a bordered on being surly. I would be hesitant about staying there again given choices available in the area.

Room Tip: All the chalets seemed to have good views and are very spacious and well furnished.

I would like to thank you for taking the time to write to us with your comments. We are very pleased to learn that you very much enjoyed the rooms at Sanctuary Chobe Chilwero and are sorry to hear that the cuisine and the restaurant service was below your expectations.

Please rest assured that this is certainly not indicative of the level of experience that we aim to provide and Sanctuary Chobe Chilwero usually receives very positive feedback from our guests, as can be seen by the comments on TripAdvisor.

We would be grateful if you could let us know which aspects of your dining experience didn’t please you so that we can work on improving it. We shared your feedback regarding the restaurant staff with the Management team. At the beginning of the year, we conducted extensive staff training in all our lodges and this exercise will be repeated to ensure the highest service levels are achieved.

Once again, thank you for your valuable feedback.

We spent two wonderful nights at Chobe Chilwero. We were welcomed with a cool towel and a delicious refreshing Lemon Ginger Drink (yes, they will share the recipe) and this was just the beginning of the warm friendly service. The main lodge is comfortable and elegant, the rooms were spacious and well equipped. Some rooms are a bit of a walk from the main lodge, you must be escorted when it is the dark for safety, so you don't want to forget anything. Our rooms were very private and had a nice out door sitting area. The food is very good, and the kitchen was happy to accommodate special requests/diets. The desserts were especially good (so forget those diets!) One evening there was a demonstration of local traditional dance, this added nice variety to the evenings. But of course the real reason to visit Chobe Chilwero is the game drives/boat outings, this is in the heart of the Land of Giants! The Land Cruisers are comfortable,as was the boat, and the guides are knowledgeable. Our guide was great at spotting birds, of which we saw and abundance. We took advantage of the river outings and the variety of birds were saw was a treat! We saw lots of wildlife along the river bank, another treat. Lots of Hippos and a few Crocodiles in the river. Great place!

Room Tip: If walking is an issue, you might request a room close to the Main lodge.

I would like to start by explaining that Chilwero is more of a lodge compared with the Sanctuary Botswana small camps. We therefore expected a higher standard of accommodation but realised that this could come with a trade off against a more charming and personal atmosphere. It was always going to difficult for Chilwero to match our very special experiences at Stanley’s and Chief’s.

The welcome was OK but not as friendly and our few questions could not be answered. Rooms were clean and spacious (there are slight differences in room and patio layout but these are marginal) but some aspects of maintenance needs to be improved (e.g. toilet door in room tended to stick; bed valances were loose; the only ladies toilet in the public area was out of order).

The choice and quality of food was OK but (sorry I realise that we are repeating) not to the standard we had experienced in Stanley’s and Chief’s (the make your own pizza lunch might be fun for some but this is not what draws us back to Africa). The public areas and service would benefit from some more charm and warmth. Your wake calls are by phone and there are no tea/coffee facilitates in the room but you can ask for a tray to be delivered.

Some excellent game viewing with Mushe as our guide. Despite the embargo on off road driving within the Chobe National Park, we saw lots of buffalo, antelope, elephant, zebra, giraffes plus a pride of lion still guarding their recent ‘kill’. We would recommend that you do take the river safari at least once to see hippos out of the water plus crocodiles, elephants and lots of bird life.

This lodge surprised me.

The accommodation was much better than what I'd expected. (I don't think the marketing does this place justice). Our room was of Aman quality, 6 star indeed. The service was even better.

We saw everything we wanted to on the drives and the cruise. Elephants, hippos, lions, giraffes, crocs, buffalos, lions ...

The food was great too.

I really recommend this place. It's just an hour and a half from Victoria Falls (Zimbabawe) which makes it very accessible too.
