Muchenje Safari Lodge
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 20 April 2014

Robert and Joy are the enthusiastic hosts at Muchenje, and have a well-run establishment. The rooms are chalets with air conditioning with a beautiful view overlooking the Chobe River. Guides are very knowledgeable. Don't miss the full day trip including boat ride. Food excellent and plentiful. Fun sharing meals with guides and staff. Had a great side trip to visit the local school and town with one guide who had grown up there. Well worth the trip. We were able to see many elephants, giraffe, water buffalo, zebra, and lion among others.

We stayed at Muchenje for our honeymoon at the end of March for four nights. This was our first visit to Africa and our first safari - so while we don't have anything else to compare to - we thoroughly enjoyed our time at Muchenje!

All of our transfers were organised perfectly and we had no trouble making our way there from Livingstone airport, Zambia. We were greeted by Sue and other friendly staff members who immediately made us feel like we were at home. The room was clean although slightly more "rustic" than we were anticipating - but we had beautiful views, the fan provided enough circulation to stay cool in the evenings, and the mosquito nets protected us from all of the insects.

The safaris were even better than we could have imagined. We didn't think we would see too much as it was the end of the rainy season but we saw so many animals and the most beautiful birds. The guides are extremely knowledgable and there was no question they didn't have the answer to. They are so passionate about what they do and it made us as guests even more excited. We loved the safaris so much that we didn't participate in any other activities or use the other amenities of the lodge - but we wanted to get the most out of the safari experience.

The meals were simple home cooking but they were always delicious and the service of the staff was excellent. My husband has a peanut allergy and they were very accommodating and put us at ease that everything was okay for him to eat. It was the perfect food after a long day on the jeep. It was also really nice getting to sit with the safari guides and other staff and learn about the area and the culture.

The second night we came back to our room to find a bottle of sparkling wine and a congratulations note. It was a very sweet gesture that we really appreciated.

Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. If you are expecting fine dining or "5-star" treatment then this may not be the place for you - but if you would like a more authentic, rustic feel for your safari while still being well taken care of then this is definitely the place for you. Hoping to be back in the future!

We thoroughly enjoyed our two night stay and wish we had extended to three nights. We arrived to a breathtaking vista and a wonderful warm welcome from Joy. The property is well and lovingly maintained, with attention to detail and quality which really enhanced our holiday experience. The beds are really comfortable. The staff all seem happy to be a part of Muchenje and we enjoyed getting to know them better at mealtimes and after dinner. Nothing was too much trouble to make our stay enjoyable, including preparing gluten free food and laundry.

The chefs delivered excellent tasty food efficiently served, and the chat around the fire pit after dinner is a genial way to round off a full day.

We had some wonderful sightings, the river cruise was a highlight with swimming elephants and wallowing hippos. Lying is bed listening to lions roaring outsider the camp was exciting and a good reminder to keep windows closed!

Our only regret was that we didn't have longer to enjoy the lodge itself, relaxing by the pool, the viewing terraces and the deck outside our room.

Our commendations to the owners - and Robert and Joy as highly professional property managers - on creating a generous and welcoming experience for Muchenje guests!

Staying at Muchenje is one of the really great travel experiences. The lodge itself is excellent in the rooms, the friendliness and expertise of all the staff, and the setting on a scarp high above the river - and elephants and lions are nearby and known to have taken water at the lodge pool. The guides are fabulous - we were there 4 days and saw lions on 3 occasions which is a really good testament to the trackers. Rob and Joy run a terrific team and show, the Chobe Park is a fantastic experience, and we will be back

My room looked out over a cliff unto the flood plan below. One could easily spend an afternoon just enjoying the view from the room or the lodge. But Muchenje has a lot more to offer. I particularly appreciated the fact that they ran all-day outings, beginning with a drive, then going out on a boat for the afternoon (including picnic lunch) and then ending with another long drive. Viewing wildlife on the boat provided a different perspective and also often allowed the guides to get closer to the game (since they had to stay on the trails within Chobe).

Beyond the game viewing, Muchenje had a friendly, family-like staff, excellent food and a relaxing main lodge. My only complaint: I had hoped to get a shirt to advertise it to others (but the gift shop was closed for renovations). I would highly recommend it to anyone considering a trip to Chobe.

We fell in love with the Muchenje Safari Lodge. The facility is amazing, in an amazing location, with an amazing view -- you get the idea. 11 cottages overlook the flood plane and when it is really dry animals flock to Muchenje's own watering hole. A beautiful pool and multiple viewing decks are a great place to sit although we were there in March and the bug population can be overwhelming. Great meals are included and the senior staff dine with you so you have a chance to get to know them - a very colorful group in every way!

Raves for Muchenje! We had a wonderful time there and saw an amazing amount of wildlife. The manager, Robert, knows what he is doing as every bit of service was gracious, warm, and comfortable. Our guide Synack was lots of fun and had a great way about him. The rooms and meals were fabulous and the location is excellent. We want to go back!

Room Tip: We were in #1 - the furthest away from the lodge. 2 baths and a great view from the tub and deck.
