Deception Valley Camp Kalahari Botswana
While planning our trip to Botswana, many advised against the Kalahari as it was purported to be rough and might be difficult to handle. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth and to our delight Deception Valley Camp Kalahari turned out to be the high point in our 23-day southern African sojourn. It was undeniably hot (read very hot!), but the gracious hospitality extended to us by our hosts was unique and immeasurably memorable.
Africa is an ancient and rich land and the opportunity to see even a part of it lovingly tended to and nurtured for the last 15 odd years by a family that cares makes for a very special experience indeed. Having pursued a business career successfully, the owners (Gerrard and his partner Brahm), decided to venture into the Namibian bush and started a process of ‘natural preservation and regeneration’ of the land, its flora and fauna. Later, they were joined by Gerrard’s son Yacob who brought to the table an education in environmental studies and being sensitive to the land of his upbringing is now fully immersed in running an excellent camp. The level of comfort and care lavished on you will never let you realize they are managing scarce resources --- with no electricity, water supply and the nearest town, Maun, being at least 5-6 hours away. What they have achieved is a testimony to their love for the land and the wildlife. The accommodation is very comfortable: beautifully appointed individual huts with a sitting room, verandah and all other luxuries you would associate with a ‘corporate’ jungle camp. The food too was par excellence.
Our drives after sunset, the ability to go off road were particularly exciting as was the ‘walk in the bush’ led by two members of the Deception Valley team, native Naaru tribesman, who explained the ancient art of bushcraft. Besides the rare and magnificent oryx, this is also the only place to see the black-maned Kalahari lion.
On our journey through Botswana this was where we got a feel of the ‘real Africa’ with its vast open spaces and the aura of an ancient land and we highly recommend a visit to the wonderful Deception Valley Camp.

This was our last stop in Botswana on a 12 day tour. We had 3 excellent days made so by the place and the welcoming people. Rooms food and game viewing and tracking are excellent.
Game in quality not quantity but harsh environment made this all the more relevant.
Great bushman experience and overall excellent staff quality and service.

My wife and I stayed 3 nights and had a wonderful time. The family owned and operated lodge and safari guiding provided a unique experience that the other lodges we stayed at in Botswana could not provide. When your hosts are the same people that poured their sweat and money into building the lodge it adds a new level of enjoyment to the experience. The game drives with Jacobus were very enjoyable and the bushmen bush walk with Clissi (sp?) was a unique experience that allowed us to learn something about how the bushmen used to live (only a short 20-30 yrs ago). Jacobus and Clissi were also skilled at tracking lions providing us a great experience watching a pride come back together after a full day of (attempted) hunting. The watering hole out front of the lodge provided some interesting game viewing as well (giraffes drinking, ostrich staking its claim against kudu, wildabeast, and warthogs).

The new chef was fantastic, gourmet class. The service was amazing and the villas are very spacious and well appointed. We were the only ones at the lodge on the last night and a 2 seater table was setup for us right beside the camp fire, a very nice touch.

My wife and I started our trip in Botswana in Deception Valley Lodge and the experience was EXCEPTIONAL !! Our host, Jaku, picked us up at the airstrip and three days of safari pampering started. Game drives were very interesting, thanks to a very knowledgeable Jaku and the fantastic tracker Tchota. They showed us the wonders of the Kalahari desert and all its beauties.
The food was our biggest surprise: the cook created and cooked wonderful dishes with local game and all sorts of fresh products: these were the best meals we had during our whole trip.
We had the chance of being the only guests during our stay, so we got extra spoiled by the whole staff.
All the rest of the food, amenities, rooms, ... were also perfect, so we really keep a wonderful memory of Deception Valley Lodge. Thank you Jaku and the whole team !
We will go back and stay longer if possible.

We began our African adventure here and were so glad. It was the perfect introduction. The accommodatin is spacious and comfortable, the food wonderful and the hospitality superb. There is a real personal approach to the experience here brought about by the family atmosphere and the open friendly manner of the owners and their staff. The game viewing was enhanced by the depth of knowledge about the animals and the extra length Jacob and his team went to to give us a close up and personal observation. Having the tracker on board was a bonus. He was so interesting to watch and to learn from.

We learnt a lot about the life of the Kalahari bushmen from the cultural afternoon and walk through the bush.

Room Tip: All rooms are good. Each is situated to provide privacy without compromising the views and feeling like you are staying in your own personal Kalahari cabin.
