“Exceeded Expectations”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 June 2014

I have previously stayed in 8 AndBeyond Safari lodges. This was the second tented lodge I visited on this Safari, the first was the Nxebega camp. While I enjoyed Nxebega, the staff, Ak and Bt were a great Driver/ tracker Team, and accommodations were good. Xaranna Camp was on a much higher Level. It was a more Delta experience, requiring us to take a short boat ride to get to our game ride vehicle. The Tent was mor than twice the size of Nxebega with walled off showers, toilets, and dressing areas. The amenities were exceptional and well thought out. It took me five minutes to find and turn off all the light switches on the first night.
The predrive morning breakfast at 6:30 am was more better at Xaranna, ie a choice of 4-5 fruits instead of 1 at Nxebega. One major problem was the poor Wifi at both camps. It works at the speed of a dial up connection. I think they get their signal through their sattelite phone connection.
My Driver Ben and Tracker alicious did a great job and were very knowledgeable.
Co managers Aaron ans Nxebega could not have been nicer. Would gladly return.
Room One was incredible, great view and proximity to main lodge.

Room Tip: Room 1. Very voles to main lodge and great view of delta

A very special place and the staff were all lovely and helpfull. The guides were very interesting and knowledgeable making the wildlife experience fabulous for us. Thank you Xaranna staff. The Okavango Delta is not to be missed when visiting Africa.

The Okavango Delta is amazing - so huge and unusual. Xaranna tented camp is a 5 star location that sits right on a main waterway - hippos will travel by in the evenings. You'll land at Pom Pom airstrip and the camp is about a 20-25 minute ride away through water - depending on the water depth you will go via boat or vehicle. The camp is stunningly beautiful and will provide for every need you could possibly imagine. The staff were unbelievably nice and attentive. The rooms were huge with a large bathroom by any standards, including a ball and claw tub, large double vanity, and a huge shower, with a closet to hang clothes or shelves for your bags/clothes. They do provide bug repellent so you don't need to bring any unless you just want to. Electricity is 220v and is shut off for about 4-5 hours in the middle of the night (I'm guessing midnight to 4 or 5am). Our room had an airconditioner above the bed to cool things down if necessary - we only used it 1 evening for just an hour or two.

The safari experiences will consist of vehicles, boats, and mokoro (traditional looking canoes). Because the water levels is changing consistantly due to the rains in Angola, there are temporary swaps, permanent swamps, islands, and such that make up the region. Because of the water the game is a little more spread out so you will hunt a little more to find animals than you would in the Mara in Kenya, but it is well worth it to visit b/c it is so different in the Delta. If you are considering and andBeyond camp, do it - you will not regret it, however you will be spoiled for life and never want to use another company as they will take great care of you and were the nicest and most hospitable staff I've ever encountered.

Also, wifi is available in the 'lobby' and dining areas. It is weakest in the middle of the day and stronger in the evenings. I was able to upload pictures to email or post online for friends/family to see.

Room Tip: I don't think there is a bad room choice. All face the water and you will hear hippos roaring/g...

After not having a great experience at Xudum, I have to say I wasn't looking forward to Xaranna, but we really didn't have anything to worry about it was fabulous. Tess the Manager welcomed us and she new all about my dietary requirements, our room was lovely, the food and service was fantastic, you also get a lovely pot of tea and coffee as your wake up call which we thought was a beautiful touch.
This was a (luxury) tented camp so when you go to bed at night, the monkeys try to get in and the hippos feel like they are right outside your tent, so for the 4 nights we stayed I didn't sleep that well, but it was great fun and life is an adventure.

our Ranger Mott and Tracker Twixley were very funny and we met a lovely Lady called Caroline (the Rhino Researcher) based part time at the camp.
I would advise that you do the morning game drive by vehicle and then the afternoon one by boat as it's beautiful watching the sun set over the water.

The only negative for us was that there wasn't many animals , we are used to being on safari in South Africa and seeing lots but if Botswana is on your tick list then this is the place for you.

We had a fantastic time at Xarana. We had excellent service in particular from the manager Tess, the assistant manager Aaron, and the guide Gift who all went out of their way to make my 50th birthday and my husbands 55th birthday truly memorable (with many special treats all day on both of our birthday days from this team and their staff at Xarana). Xarana had by far the most personalised service at a lodge that we had ever experienced. Wonderful lodge!

Sigh…this was the 4th of 4 Lodges/Camps on this trip, and we were so disappointed in this camp. Except for Gift & Action (our Guide & Tracker) who we absolutely LOVED and the Butlers Kenneth & Allen, Xaranna was just not up to usual &Beyond standards of service, food and accommodations. I think it was largely due to poor management…during our 3-night stay, we saw the Manager (Aaron) for maybe 15 minutes, total. And as opposed to Nxabega, where staff was constantly available, this camp was a wasteland…we often had to hunt down staff for a drink or other request. And it was just a series of small annoyances that added up…they never had napkins at breakfast or tea…they wouldn’t have toast ready for breakfast, so by the time they made it when you ordered it (20 minutes) it was already time to leave for your morning drive…they never iced down the cooler in the room, and rarely refreshed it with water bottles…the flashlight batteries in one of our rooms was dead, and was never replaced during our 3 night stay, even with multiple requests…the food wasn’t up to the standards of other &Beyond properties…and for the bar area in the lodge, they had about 10 bottles of liquor, but no ice, glasses, or mixers, and the refrigerator didn’t work, so no cold beers in the common area. This wouldn’t have been so bad if they had someone on hand to take drink orders, but that was rarely the case. The worst part was the horrible condition and lack of maintenance on their vehicles. One vehicle they knew had a bad starter, yet they kept using it….quite disconcerting when you are 10 feet from a lion, the sun is going down, no rifle, and the vehicle won’t start. Gulp! We also had a flat tire one day (which is to be expected on drives), but the next day, when we had to take the same vehicle, they didn’t have a new spare tire! I will say, the suites were amazingly big (larger than my 1 BR condo in Chicago), with a fabulous view of the Delta, but they were getting a bit worn, and items were broken or missing from each. We actually did a quick visit to their sister property (Xudum Okavango Delta Lodge) which was only a 10 or 15 minute boat ride from Xaranna, and it was in much better condition, and the staff seemed much more attentive. I would highly recommend Xudum over Xaranna if you are staying in this area. Special shout-out and thanks to Gift & Action…they truly made our stay special….each day was something new and exciting, and Action was an astounding tracker…we even got to see the elusive African Wild Dogs (aka Painted Dogs) hunting!! Wow!!
