“An Amazing Experience in Botzwana!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 January 2013 via mobile

I loved my stay at Delta Camp. The welcome at the airstrip, the rides in the mokoro, the tree house, the walking safaries, Moremi National , our expert guide and hosts, the delicious food, the starry night sky, the elephants around the camp, the sunrises and the sunsets...Everything during my time there was extraordinary !
The place is incredibly beautiful and untouched. I really felt I was in Africa...I fell in love with the Okavango Delta... I really recommend everyone to visit Botzwana, a country with the nicest people and full of unforgettable experiences...I will come back some day!

We undertook a very last minute trip to the delta in November 2012. Delta Air flew us from Maun to the airstrip at Oddballs Camp and upon landing were received by 3 of the Delta Camp staff. We were then taken to Delta Camp by mokoro. We spent two nights at the camp in exceptional lodging. The staff catered for our every need and the food was fantastic. We specifically wanted guided walks and mokoro trips as our priority - the staff made sure we got what we wanted. The treehouse cabin is a must for any couple - located high up in a tree with its own deck overlooking the Moremi River. Overall a memorable experience!

Room Tip: Treehouse cabin for couples

Delta Camp is an unforgettable way to go on safari. There are no motor boats, no game vehicles. Just authentic dug out mokoros, that slide silently between the reeds of the Okavango Delta (others use fibreglass). And walking quietly on foot, single file, wading barefoot through shallow water at times, examining spoor and scat, listening intently for cracking branches or the alarm cries of francolin or baboons, then tiptoeing around the big five, downwind, respectfully, quietly. Without firearms. So real, up-close and personal, it makes all other motorised safari experiences feel as crass, detached as taking a sightseeing bus.
You land on a remote sand airstrip (often a walking path for elephants as we discovered) right where Oddballs camp is located. But then it's another hour by mokoro to Delta, a camp of seven open reed-walled huts - with canvas drop-cloths for night - facing a hippo pool, or the island, and just a river crossing to Chief's Island and the Morembi Game Reserve. The communal lounge/dining area facing the water is where you gather for great food and free-flowing drinks at dawn, breakfast, lunch and dusk, shared with birds, tree squirrels and vervet monkeys, and passing elephants, who make it clear they have right of way. Food is excellent and original (I'm going to chase the recipe for apple soup) but avoids the exotic game (eg eland, kudu, crocodile) meats served elsewhere at game lodges in Africa. Accommodation is rustic, but private, clean and beautiful. Throughout the night, we heard leopards roaring, hippos and elephants munching right outside, a resident fruit bat flying in and out (but it is no concern, as you are under generous mosquito netting), but slept incredibly well. Not for the faint-hearted (leeches, pythons, bats, leopard kills, yes it's true) but cannot recommend this more highly for anyone wanting an up-close and personal, swiss family robinson style eco adventure.

Room Tip: The Tree House is an amazing room to choose (especially for couples, way up in a tree, it's tota...

We ended our Okavango experience with four nights here in September '10. We could not have been happier. We had two bull elephants jousting with 20 metres of our waterside suite, excellent food and wine, great staff and the wonderful experience of mokoro trips to islands with long walks, game viewing up close and watching elephants swim the river. One night a leopard visited the kitchen while we slept.

Have stayed here twice and of the five different camps I've visited, this is my favorite. It has the most knowledgeable and friendliest staff, coolest accomodation and absolutely wonderful views from the bar/restaurant. Especially if you're a birder, this is a must. The staff knows were Pel's Fishing Owls are, Slaty Egrets fly Past and you don't need to leave the bar to get Chirping Cisticola and Black Coucal. Also plenty of reptiles, if you consider that a plus. :)

Room Tip: Ask for the "tree house" or "baboon castle".

This was our first stop on our safari trip. It was absolutely beautiful. The dug-out micuro trips are extremely relaxing, and authentic (some lodges use plexiglass), the guides super enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and fun. The guides (as a family of 4, we had 2 guides) had time to give detailed answers to all of our questions and tell stories about all the animals. The food was delicious (including the vegetarian options), and the accomodations extrodinary. We saw herds of zebra, impala, baboons. Tons of elephants all around, and some hippos. There were also red lechee, a giraffe, kudu, hyenas, and more. The camp was perfect and we had a great time.

A word of note, because you are traveling by micuro and by foot, you do not cover as much ground as say, a jeep safari, and therefore may not see as many animals or get as close to them as in a jeep at other delta camps or in a boat at the chobe. Because this was our first camp, every sighting was a thrill and we learned a lot about each animal we saw, including tracks and droppings. Had we came to Delta Camp toward our end of our trip, I think we would have been jaded and not found the place as exciting.

Make Delta Camp your first stop on your safari, and you will not regret it.

Room Tip: The treehouse, was beautiful, whimsical, functional, (and cold when windy). Other chalet was just a...

Arrived at Delta camp via a little cessna from Maun on the sand/mud strip runway and transfered to camp via mokoro canoe gliding along the crystal clear waters of the delta, dodging hippos along the way, a slightly daunting experience to say the least! However you get used to it. The main lodge is in a stunning setting, one of the first to be built in the delta but still looks as good as new. The chalet rooms are various designs of tree house built into the surrounding area all with unique and stunning views, elephants often wander through which provides wonderful photo opportunities, as long you stay out of their way! Game walks on the surrounding islands are very interesting although in summer (Dec - Mar) a lot of the animals are dispersed as there is so much water around. However you are guaranteed to see elephants and hippos all year round and bird watching is spectacular. The food was amazing and of the highest standard. But it was the staff that really made the stay special, I can't recommend this lodge enough and really didn't want to leave after only 3 nights!
