“Magical Place”
Reviewed 26 November 2013 via mobile

Not much to add to other reviewers comments. We absolutely loved this place. Apart from the beautiful accommodation, facilities and food, it is the people who make Xigera the magic place that it is. The guides are immensely knowledgeable and passionate about their work and Botswana. They were the most friendly and professional of the 4 lodges we visited in Botswana and South Africa. The lodge staff were efficient and so lovely. Great leadership from Neil.
Special mention to Goms who's knowledge and passion for the wildlife and birds made our stay so very memorable.
Highly highly recommend.

Our family of five adults arrived at Xigera from the excitement of Lagoon camp. Three of us had stayed in Xigera several years before and were delighted to be back. Neil and his team are thoroughly professional, engaging, friendly without being overbearing. Everyone is full of good humour. Our guide, Henny, could not have been better. A star! The tents and common areas are comfortable, well set out and equipped. We wanted for nothing and could not ask for more.

We chose Xigera to experience its atmosphere and its pristine surroundings. It really is an astonishingly beautiful location with fast flowing water channels and languid pools. But this year by late August the waters had already receded to such an extent that some important channels were closed to power boats and some special areas were inaccessible. That said, we were frequently very close to hippos and elephants, not to mention crocs and water snakes. The birdlife above all is spectacular and the hours drifted away as we glided amongst them on makoras or motor boats. Our boat trip to idyllic Xigera Lagoon brought us to our first sighting of a group of the nearly endangered African Skimmers. This was pic-nic time for us as we watched these remarkable birds and their companions - egrets, herons, storks, ibis, cranes - feeding on and around the sandbank. It doesn't get any better than this.

Whilst we may have come to Xigera for the water and the birds, the experience of our game drive will never be forgotten. We had our most fascinating and intimate elephant encounter ever. Over an hour or two we watched two groups of elephants feeding on real fan palm fruits. We watched the largest female strike one tree and then another, shaking each in turn till the fruit came raining down. She meticulously gathered each before popping it into her mouth as we might a peanut. The youngsters were pushed away. Eventually, in one case, the only fruits uneaten had rolled to the very edge of our vehicle. The gentle giant lumbered over till she was within touching distance entirely focussed on leaving not one behind. Thank you Henny, thank you Xigera.

Overall the camp gets good review due tothe game viewing, excellent staff, and nice location.
Camp Manager is very good, food is excellent. Location is key to game viewing.
Room was very nice except the shower drain does not drain very fast and water goes outside the shower drain area onto wooden floor. We pointed this out to staff and learned our traveling couple had same problem.
Other issue is an elephant knocked over a tree and broke down part of the elevated walkway.
People want to be close to animals but sometimes this can be a problem or potential problem.
How do you stop an elephant ? In any case camp was lucky no one was injured.
Despite these two issue we would recommend the camp.

My husband and I have been living and safari-ing in East and Southern Africa for the past five years and we've tried the most posh to the most basic and found pros and cons of each. We are happiest when we go somewhere in the middle and find a place where we can blend into the surroundings without worrying about being eaten by them. Xigera was one of those places. In addition to that, we found it lovely to explore the smaller side of safari; birds, plants, insects which are just as or more magical than the usual big game.

The tents had everything you need, the views were lovely, we had a visit from an elephant who felt very close and comfortable with us which was sweet and exciting no matter how many times you see this. The motor boat rides and mokoro (canoe) trips were just gorgeous and we felt quite spoiled but in a non-pretentious, you're on vacation just enjoy yourself kind of way. Drinks were spectacular, food was quite good, company of the other guests was very nice (even for introverts as we are sitting at a group table). It's a water safari place much more than land safari although we had a very exciting encounter with a leopard I'll never forget. Our guides Vic and Dips were so passionate about their work and knowledgeable beyond belief and it really is one of the most important elements of safari to have people really share that passion and details about your surroundings with you.

Thanks to the entire crew at Xigera for your hospitality. Hope to make it back in the not-too-distant future!

I was so surprised by all the bird varieties in Botswana and the Savuti Camp was an ideal base. Through the navigations of our guides along the channel waterways, we encountered so many types of birds, herons, storks, kingfishers, eagles, and of course we saw a lot of the channel-dwelling hippos. Getting around on the boats is such a pleasant way to sightsee. The staff service was top notch as well.

I had the pleasure of spending 4 nights at the beautiful Xigera after 6 weeks working in South Africa. I arrived feeling very tired and left feeling completely refreshed. I couldn't have chosen a better place for my R&R. The staff were just wonderful, so happy friendly helpful and accommodating. Nothing was too much trouble. The tent was beautiful, the location of the camp breath taking and the food was some of the best I have ever had in Africa, and I have been to Africa 7 times and stayed in some of the "best" camps on the Continent. As I expected there was not a huge amount of game but I wasn't there for that, I was there to soak up the beauty, peace and tranquility of the Delta and Xigera delivered in spades. I would definitely return.

Flying in to Xigera's tiny "airport," our small plane had to make two passes to avoid hitting the Saddle-billed Storks flying beside us. For a birder like me, it was quite a thrill. And everything else was superb as well. This lovely camp is elevated above the stomping grounds of hippos, warthogs, kudus, and elephants. From the deck of our tent, we had a view across permanent water to islands, which were the homes of red lechwe, elephants, slaty egrets, wattled cranes, and fish eagles. Our rising-star ranger, Henny, was unbelieveably knowledgable, kind, and funny. He moved us about in a motor launch, mokoros, and a landrover, which meant that we got to see not only the water life but also animals and birds on land. The best of both worlds.

With only about 20 guests staying on the entire island, it was easy to forget the hustle and bustle of the outside world. The dining area and lounge were very well set up. The staff were warm and helpful. True to his title, the manager managed to get the mokoro polers to carve us some small mokoros that hold tea lights and make for wonderful table decorations. Food was very good, and we enjoyed meeting the other guests. Unlike a few of the fifteen other lodges we have visited in Namibia and South Africa, there was a casual atmosphere -- no snobbiness and no dressing up for dinner! Just warmth and friendliness in the wilderness.
