“Amazing Wedding Venue”
Reviewed 6 June 2012

As soon as we saw Hartwell House we fell in love with it and knew that we had to have our wedding (in April 2012) there. Not only is Hartwell House set in the most stunning, peaceful setting, but the house itself is beautiful, amazing to look at and very well kept. Not at all shabby. The staff are all incredibly friendly and seemed really happy to be there. They made my now husband and I feel like we belonged. They made us feel relaxed and nothing was too much trouble for them.

All of the rooms are beautifully decorated and are very homely. After an evening of sampling the most delicious wedding food we went into the library where the fire was lit. We kicked off our shoes and were served coffee and sweets to finish the evening off. It was really relaxing, almost like we were in our own sitting room at home, apart from much, much larger!!

The bedrooms are all individually designed and are well kept. The beds are comfortable and the bathrooms big enough for an army! The views are spectacular. The dining room is light and friendly and the food is incredible and they also catered for those with allergies.

Mirella, the amazing wedding planner, is so friendly and was easy to chat to about all of our ideas. She was able to provide us with all of the information we needed and was so helpful answering all of our questions. Mirella arranged all of our meetings with the Marquee company (Hartwell House use them when you have exclusive use) and she gave me some good ideas that helped to make our day even more special. We had 6 months of planning our 'Big Day' and the whole experience was a happy, exciting and not at all a stressful one.

We did not have our wedding ceremony at Hartwell House as we wanted to be married in our local church, but as soon as we arrived we had a glass of champagne handed to us, canapés were handed around and our guests were very well looked after - checking in discretely and with ease. Special thanks to Maggie, Chris, James and Mike for their attention to detail and for making us feel at home throughout our few days there.

Our wedding reception ran smoothly without any hiccups and our guests were blown away at how beautiful Hartwell House was. They all loved their rooms and enjoyed the cooked breakfasts the next morning. We have had so many letters from friends since the wedding saying how much they enjoyed staying there, how lovely all of the staff were, how delicious the food was and how they will be returning soon.

We would recommend Hartwell House to anyone at all, especially those who want a relaxing or romantic weekend away, a private party, a wedding ceremony and/or reception, naming ceremony, somewhere to get away from it all or just for a delicious afternoon tea, lunch or dinner.

My second stay at this hotel started off fabulously, my husband had chosen a beautiful four poster room and I was looking forward to our escape from reality. The tasting dinner was very good and, although our waitress lacked charm, we were allowed to eat our food without being constantly bothered which was lovely. The dining room is pretty unattractive but being a listed building they would struggle to improve it. The other rooms in the hotel are stunning. However at 5am I was woken by a dripping noise. It was pretty stormy outside so I presumed that rain was dripping on the single glazing, annoying but it's an old listed building. At 7am still disturbed by the constant dripping noise, I got up and found that the dripping was inside our room and rain was coming in from the ceiling onto the corner of window cushion. There was no way to catch the drips so I put a towel down to soften the noise and protect the cushion. Half an hour later, the water coming into the room had increased and the wallpaper was peeling. We kind of gave up getting any sleep at that stage, had breakfast in our room and left soon after. We obviously reported the dripping and reception made calls to get the maintenance team out but apologies for the lack of sleep and inconvenience seemed somewhat lacking. After spending over £650 for dinner, bed and breakfast, we have yet to receive an apology for this incident therefore we won't be returning.

Room Tip: Don't go when it's raining outside!

This was our first visit to this fine hotel but it will not be our last. First impressions are everything and as were shown around by the Hotel Director Mr. Thompson we started at the top. However all staff were friendly and informative. The hotel has so much history and is set in 94 acres of parkland so there is much to explore. We had a beautiful courtyard room which was more of a cottage then a hotel room- absolutely superb.
We ate lunch our first day and dinner our second day in the hotel restaurant and both were of high standard. We also utilised the spa which was well equippeedwith an indoor swimming pool, inside and outside hot tub, sauna and steam.
Just 2 things prevented an award of 5 stars
1. breakfast service on bank holiday monday was abaolutely chaotic. Compare the next day when it was peace and tranquility personified
2 in a hotel of this class you would expect the barman to be able to mix a cocktail- my wife's dry vodka martini was no more than sweet cinzano and was undrinkable

However these were minor blemishes in one of the most restful 2 days we have ever spent and no more than an hour's drive from London. We will certainly be back

A superb wedding anniversary lunch prompts me to write another paean of praise for this truly outstanding hotel with its delightful restaurant and superb staff. We (widow and widower) were married here five years ago and we have never forgotten how well-organised - yet subtly underplayed - everything was. Hence our frequent return visits, and never has it let us down.
Although it is, obviously, a corporately-owned establishment, the impression is of a family-owned and - run, hotel, probably because of the almost permanent presence of the same friendly, obliging, yet not obsequious staff. The food is first-class, a little bit "nouvelle" perhaps, yet we always find it more than enough and preferable to leaving feeling stuffed!
The spa does leave something to be desired, it is true - perhaps a little upgrading would not come amiss? - but overall, there is nowhere in the area we would prefer, whether for an indulgent overnight stay, or an outstanding meal. Hartwell is always consistent.

Room Tip: The one over the porch (the Queen's room? - I can't remember - is pretty special!

Large luxury rooms in an awesome, somewhat palatial setting. some mod cons are missing (no tea/coffee in your room - but just call up and have fresh coffee delivered instead; small cheap TV / DVD player in the room, etc) but you nevertheless feel very special in this place. It really feels and looks like an 18th century stately home. The spa and sauna facilities are welcome and we used them every day, but the gym is very small (one strange cross-trainer, one ergo, one bike, two treadmills) and doesn't do justice to this hotel. At busy periods, I can imagine that the gym would get full very quickly!! They do also have tennis courts but the weather was
awful when we were there so we steered clear.

The restaurant served up an amazing meal but it's not cheap (3 courses a la carte for two people was £100 - for food only). They also do great breakfasts which were included in our room tarriff. There is however a much more reasonable cafe at the spa just up the hill where we often ate after a relaxing gym-swim-jacuzzi-sauna session.

If you want to spoil yourself for a weekend, this is a wonderful place to do so. It is miles away from any chain "luxury" hotel. See some of the pictures to find out why.

Our first visit to Hartwell was for Sunday Lunch and everything from the welcome at reception through to the service in the restraurant was truely exception with friendly attentive staff throughout.

Lunch was excellent. The white onion soup was unsual and flavoursome, My main course of roast beef was cooked to perfection. My Wife's main course was a fillet of sole encased in a potatoe lattice crust and served on a spinach bed. Sounds bizarre, but was full of flavours and melted in the mouth.

Desserts of chocolate fondant were perfection.

Before lunch you we recommend that you have a drink which is served with canapes in the drawing room which in itself is stunning.

Over the years we have dined at the Ritz, Savoy and other well regarded restaurants and can honestly say Hartwell is the best.

Now we have discovered it we will be back.

We stayed at Hartwell last Friday night and I wanted to tell you how much we had enjoyed every aspect of our stay. In short, we had an exceptional time ... the glorious setting and architecture was further enhanced by gracious interiors and spacious rooms and historical reverberations. The food was a gourmet and a gourmand's idyll and the staff excelled with their friendly, informative and efficient service.

The predicted monsoon failed to materialise so we had the opportunity to enjoy the landscape, flora and fauna. Reluctantly, our stay was necessarily short but we shall be beating a path to your door again as soon as is permissible.

Finally, Byron, bon viveur and poet extraordinaire described this gem most aptly:
"Why wouldst thou leave calm Hartwell's green abode?"

Room Tip: We slept in the main house - great views, spacious rooms and if the weather's bad, no need for a...
