“Reliable quality & value”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 May 2014

We live only a few miles from the Clifden Arms and eat here regularly. The menus are interesting, the food well and freshly cooked, and the service cheerful.
Highly recommended.

“exceptional value, and imaginative, excellent food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 April 2014

The Clifden Arms still feels and looks like an old fashioned local, but it has a rather amazing, inventive menu. We had the whole range, from kids' chicken nuggets to lamb sweetbreads and scallops, and each type of meal was brilliantly done. The service was friendly and unpretentious, and each dish cooked perfectly. We came for Sunday lunch, with three adults and two children, and had a delicious, three course lunch that cost just over £80 in total. (In a smartly painted Cotswolds gastropub it would have cost twice that.) At the moment the mismatch between the slightly shabby interior and the smart menu is charming, and I hope it doesn't change too fast. Well done and thank you! Will definitely be back.

“Dinner with friends”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 February 2014

Four of us enjoyed the excellent food here last night. The ambience was warm and friendly, the scallops starter was amazing, the haddock and chips almost perfect the batter was good but slightly soggy towards the end. Others in our party had the sirloin steak and chicken, whilst the service was appropriate for a gastro pub a little more attention in terms of smiles and detail would make the whole experience just that little more special.

“Disappointing”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 February 2014

We had a warm welcome, water was provided free of charge when we sat down. Our scallop starter was pleasant but lacked seasoning. We ordered mains of roast fillet of beef and spiced duck . We were advised that the duck would be served pink but when it arrived it was seriously underdone and impossible to cut with a knife. The waitress happily took the dish back but then returned to remind us that we were advised that the dish was served pink. We had to reiterate that the duck was presented underdone (in fact bloody), not pink. The duck dish was returned and appeared to have been reheated in the microwave. The beef dish was tasty and we enjoyed our desserts. Service felt a little rushed and we detected a slightly frosty atmosphere after we had complained even though we weren't unpleasant about it.

“Step back in time...”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 January 2014

...but in a good way. We've eaten here many times. Sometimes a spur of the moment dinner for two, sometimes a family occasion. From the outside it's a picture book thatched roofed pub in the old style. Inside too there are few pretensions of grandeur. The surprising thing, perhaps, is that there is somebody very good in the kitchen. The menu is modern and well executed. It includes typical pub favourites like ham, egg and chips and home made burgers but also some unusual soups and starters including the chef's signature scallop dish everybody loves. The owners are young and feeling their way, the waiting staff are what one would expect in a pub dining room rather than an upmarket restaurant but that's OK because they are keen to please and they are learning. Don't expect smooth and sophisticated, just a warm welcome even if you've got kids or dogs. Book ahead if you can. Go soon and make the most of it before everyone else discovers it.
