“Perfect weekend getaway”
Reviewed 23 October 2011

We just returned from a weekend stay at the Chrystie House, and couldn't have asked for more elegant accommodations or a more gracious host! Mr. Lee is a gentle, charming soul who will make sure your stay the best it can possibly be. (I called him at 9:30pm en route from the Jack O Lantern Blaze, desperately looking for a place to eat dinner, and he gave a great recommendation without even missing a beat).

The house is stunning; beautiful natural light pours in through every window. The rooms are spotless and carefully appointed with thoughtful, classic furnishings that enhance the experience of staying in such a historic house without being heavy or fussy. Mr. Lee has put his heart and soul into this house, and it shows. Our only regret is that we couldn't stay longer!

For breakfast we dined on buttery croissants and pastries, along with fresh fruit and a mouthwatering spinach quiche. Mr. Lee also whipped up the best cup of coffee I've had in months! I appreciated the thoughtfulness of the dining layout - everyone eats in the same room, but each party has their own private table, so you can mingle or not mingle as much as you want.

If you have ever used Tripadvisor, or really if you've ever traveled at all, you know that there's always one person who isn't happy unless they can hyperfocus on something to be unhappy about. The stink bug reviewer is that person, and it's their loss. For the record, I didn't see a single bug, but it wouldn't have mattered if I did.

In short, if you're looking for a getaway with romance, history, comfort, great food and a great host, look no further. You won't be disappointed with the Chrystie House.

Beautiful house and accommodating host. Mr. Lee has done an outstanding job restoring the house. A great base for exploring the Hudson valley.

I just happened to read the stink bug review and felt the need to write one myself. We recently had the pleasure of staying in the Albert Chrystie Room for three nights. The room as well as the entire home was perfectly clean and charming - no bugs. Our breakfast each day was delicious. Mr. Lee, the inkeeper, is probably the most charming, intelligent, and interesting person you will ever get the chance to spend some time with, as well as a very talented artist. He has worked very hard to create and maintain a beautiful Inn. We would have no reservations about staying there again. We live in the country in an environment very similar to his. My wife keeps a very neat and clean house. In the fall, we have experienced periodic clusters of lady bugs, flies or other creatures trying to stay warm by gathering around windows on the south side of our house. There is nothing you can to to prevent this, it's nature. This just happened to be an instance of bad timing. Even Mr. Lee can't control nature.

This place was infested with stink bugs... I am aware that they have become a problem in our area... but get an exterminator!
What's worse is that the owner thought this was normal and acceptable. He even left a pamphlet about stink bugs on the night stand, and taught us how to catch them and dispose of them ourselves. Needless to say, we left. We weren't about to pay him $220. a night to exterminate his house which was crawling with bugs. disgusting!!

Room Tip: Entire place is infested with stink bugs.

ChrystieHouse, Owner at Chrystie House Bed and Breakfast, responded to this review, 4 November 2011
The stink bug problem has never been taken lightly by Chrystie House; since this
agricultural pest first appeared in the area three years ago, the contracted
exterminators have screened through the 4 acres of ground and garden, and found
almost no sign of infestation. However with many gardens, farms in the area, the
bugs showed up sometimes in the Autumn days when the temperatures go up or down
drastically. Through the routine visits, exterminators have sprayed synthetic
pyrethroid in the areas near the house. Even though the house had just gone
through three years of restoration, all the possible cracks and gabs had been
resealed. According to the articles released by Entomologists, which I
printed for my guests to read whenever the bugs showed up and got into the
house... the best way to remove the bugs is to use vacuum, or catch them by
hand... since all the pesticides are poisonous. In a house has 30 operable
traditional windows and three entry ways for the guests to use, I think it's
important to let people understand the issue and know how to handle the
bugs if they have seen one.
The guests came in the late afternoon at 10th, the warmest day in the October,
and stink bugs had showed up in large number in almost every households in the
neighborhood, I told them that the bugs were using west walls to sun-bath,
and would leave when sun went down and temperature drop; and I have to close the back door for a few got though the storm door. I also told them that since the heater in their room had been turned up, the bugs would try to go there; I will go into the room and take the bugs out when they leave for dinner. When they informed me that they are leaving, I told them that I understand that there are people sensitive to bugs and I will not process the charge.

We stayed here one weekend last summer and were charmed by both the property and the owner. The rooms and bathrooms are comfortable and beautiful, and assembled with extreme attention to detail. The porch is a perfect setting for a leisurely (and delicious) breakfast. The best part for us was the easy walk to the train station, Dia Beacon, and Beacon's main street. We'd definitely like to go back!

Chrystie House is the place to be for a perfectly relaxing retreat: peaceful, romantic, soothing, beautiful natural surroundings, meticulously reclaimed historic home, owned and run by the lovely Yuan whose demeanor makes you feel at home the minute he greets you at the front door.

This B&B, in a historic, colonial style, painstakingly restored house was a real treat. The home is beautifully furnished with museum quality furnishings, antiques, and new period furniture. The owner, is a talented artist, a knowledgable historian, and a great conversationalist. Our room was very spacious with a king bed, wood burning fireplace and huge bathroom with original tiles and rain shower head. From the huge windows, we overlooked the four landscaped acres of trees and gardens. Very quiet and peaceful sleeping! If you don't have a car, it's a quick taxi ride from the train station, and to the quaint main street of Beacon for shops, restaurants, etc. You could walk both as well. Great breakfast provided daily. If you're looking for a quiet, elegant retreat in a tranquil setting with an attentive innkeeper who makes you feel welcome and at home, this is your place!
