“Great Time Had by All”
Reviewed 23 June 2013

I saw a lousy review that called it a "terrible place for the price". I did not stay in one of the "stone cottages", I stayed at the hotel and my experience was the complete opposite. The view from the outdoor balcony off the lobby was great, the staff was attentive and friendly and the rooms were beautiful, clean and looked new. my only gripe was with the television remote which was tied to DishTV and was very difficult to navigate. I read a good book instead. I recommend this to any family visiting Bear Mountain Park.

Room Tip: Try to get rooms on the lake side if staying during times the trees have shed their leaves.

My sister and I booked a room at the overlook lodge to get away from the bussle of the city for 1 night. We got a room with a huge panoramic window with a breathtaking view of Hessian Lake. Our room was fairly large with 2 twin beds, a kitchenette area with microwave, fridge, coffee maker and a small sink, a old tube tv, an ottoman/chair, and a desk. The bathroom was also a nice size and we especially appreciate the "green" toiletries. The lodge was a bit dated and rustic but we thought it added to the charm of this place.
We asked for a room on the 2nd floor but was assigned one on the 1st floor. The girl checking us in asked if we would want a room switch but we decided it would be fine since the lodge was pretty empty and quiet. We also arrived at 230 (check in is at 3pm) but our room was all ready and our paperwork already set and ready.
The continental breakfast consisted of baked goods, coffee, cereal, and juice. Breakfast is served in the lobby and you can take your food and sit outside on the porch overlooking the lake.
There is no dining option at the lodge so it's best to bring food or eat your meal at the restaurant at the main inn, which is located about 5min drive or 25min walk.
We arrived and left via the coach bus which picks you up and drops you off in front of the Inn. The walk to the lodge was very picturesque and we were given great directions and a nice map at the inn. Overall, we had a wonderful time to just relax and unwind and we will definitely be coming back again real soon.

Room Tip: Ask for a room as far away from the lobby as possible if you're looking for a quiet stay. The d...

We reserved a room in a Stone Cottage, last minute and for Saturday night of Mothers’ Day weekend, so accommodations were limited and expensive. Rooms at the Stone Cottages are supposed to be rustic and they are pleasantly so, but the cottages are more suited to groups than individuals. I say this because the cottages have a nice porch that faces Hessian Lake, but if you stay in one of the two rooms that border on the porch (and thus have a view), noise and privacy may be a problem. Also, the common room with the fireplace, microwave, sink etc. seems fine for a group, but limiting for, say, six couples. We were fortunate that the weather was lousy and only one other room seemed to be occupied, so the potential issues were never a factor.

The room was oddly furnished with one chair and one small oval ottoman. Although there was a TV, the operating directions were so difficult to understand we didn’t bother. This was fine as we preferred to read anyway. Reading light was inadequate. We would have preferred a second chair to an ottoman. This ottoman did come in handy, however, because the door handle to the closet was broken and we couldn’t use the closet. Instead we placed our bag on the ottoman. There was also a drawer handle missing on the chest of drawers.

Some other oddities:

Although supposedly rustic, a major traffic circle was within sight and we heard road noise throughout the night.

We had no idea where to check in. We arrived from Seven Lakes Drive and happened upon parking for the main inn, where we inquired about the cottages. The attendant didn’t know for sure where we should go, but gave us a recommendation. I feel our email confirmation should have indicated where we check in. And the main parking area should have provided us with a map to get to the cottages.

It was VERY chilly when we arrived. There is no individual heat/air control in the room. We were thankful there was an extra blanket or we would have had to sleep in sweaters. But the next morning at check OUT, there was warm air flowing into the room!

It turns out that you need to check in at the “lodge” if you’re staying in one of the cottages. Check-in was peremptory. Glaringly missing was information about staying in the cottages. In the pouring rain, we unsuccessfully tried the “front door.” We had to figure out for ourselves that access is around the back. One key card opens the cottage door and one key card opens the room door. You have to take BOTH cards with you when you leave the cottage, but who knew! We were told nothing about making a fire, though there was a supply of wood near the fireplace. We were told nothing about heat.

The continental breakfast is primarily coffee and cold cereal. There were a couple of pieces of fruit and two small tired pastries in a basket. We had our coffee on the balcony and waited for the supplies to be refreshed but it never happened. And we did not arrive on the tail end of breakfast service.

I feel justified in saying that the personnel on duty at both our check-in and breakfast was lazy and unhelpful. Why doesn’t this place take service seriously? Do they not understand that service is part of the overall experience and determines whether or not customers return??

We love Bear Mountain but are disappointed with the prevailing attitude of insouciance.

Lost reservation, keys worked sometimes, got an attitude checking in, heat controled by Inn, only 1 small fridge and microwave per 6 rooms. Can see through side of room door. Free wifi, but only in the lobby. Rooms are quarter mile from lobby and have to drive there. If this was a cubscout camp and the price was around $25 and you want one step above a tent then this is would be the place for you. Paid $135 for a tent with walls basically. Unorganized, run down place.

Room Tip: Do not go to this place unledd you are "ruffing it".

Thank you for your feedback. Please accept our utmost apologies as we did not meet your expectations. Our Stone Cottages most certainly are rustic, and for those who are looking for an authentic park setting they are ideal - however, we completely understand that this was not the type of stay you were looking for. I would love the opportunity to speak with you in more detail in order to better acquaint myself with the terms of your reservation, and conversations with our reservations agents. Please contact me at your leisure.

On Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012, I stayed at the Bear Mountain Inn in Bear Mountain, NY. Rooms are available at the Bear Mountain Inn, Overlook Lodge and Stone Cottages. I stayed at the Overlook Lodge, which is about one-quarter mile from the main inn.
Note that room registration is at the lodge itself, not at the main inn. T o get to the lodge from the main inn, we had to go back out to the traffic circle and take the exit before the one for the inn. Also note that the road to lodge, which goes past the stone cottages, is long and very dark at night. Because the restaurant wasn't open at the time of our stay, we had to go out in the evening for dinner and found the exit road a little difficult to navigate in the dark.
As mentioned, check-in is in the lodge. The lobby, which has a fireplace, features floor-to-ceiling windows that look out on Hessian Lake and beyond the Hudson River. It has a rustic look, with wood tables and chairs and arm chairs with animal motifs. Check-in was quick. The lodge accepts AAA. Coffee and tea are available in the lobby all day.
My room, which was on the first floor, was a good size with a picture window that looked out on the lake. There was one end table next to the king-size bed with a lamp, phone and radio. Opposite the bed was a cabinet with a television and desk with a lamp and chair. A pole lamp and an arm chair with an ottoman was in the corner.
One nice touch was a nook in the wall to the right of the bed with a sink, microwave, refrigerator and coffee maker. The large sliding door closet contained an extra blanket and pillows, as well as an ironing board and iron. As with the lobby, the room decor had a rustic motif, with a leaf design on the lamp shade and a bear paw and branch with pine cones design in the headboard. In the bathroom the light fixture pictured a moose in the forest.
The bathroom was on the small side but had a good amount of counter space. And there were three sets of towels, compared with most places' two.
Although it was the end of November and the air was brisk, we enjoyed an afternoon stroll around the lake where we barely encountered another soul, so it was as if we had the lake to ourselves. We also enjoyed browsing in the gift shop at the main inn.
A continental breakfast is served in the lobby. You can sit on the couch in front of the fireplace or pull a chair up to the window and enjoy the view (there is a deck with outdoor seating for warmer months). In addition to coffee or tea, muffins and cereal were available. A digest of the day's New York Times is left under the door of your room and is also available in the lobby.
As noted above, the restaurant at the inn wasn't open, so we had to go out for dinner. The inn provided a list of restaurants in nearby towns, such as Stony Point, Highland and Peekskill.

My husband and I along with our daughter stood at the overlook lodge, January 20, 2013 We arrived at 1pm to check in but was told our room was not yet ready humm!! check in is at 11am, ok so we patiently waited in the lobby and went out to balcony for the view which was nice except all the trash i did observe while looking down beer bottle, potato chip bag etc. when our room was finally ready we went. room appeared very clean but the sofa chair was very broken and it was very apparent not something pleasant to see when you first walk into the room. During the night we were freezing even after adjusting temperature several times. The heat seem not to be working at all. The "continental breakfast" is basically cold cereal, muffins or instant oatmeal, and unwashed apples that where left with the stickers on. while getting ready for check out my daughter found a pair of feathered earrings on the side of bed, which where not mine but a previous guest, what worried me is that if sheets where changed there is no way that wont fall out so I wondered if sheets were actually changed. Was happy to check out. would not consider staying here again for a few more dollars you can stay at the holiday inn express less than ten minutes away which we actually always stay at when we travel out there, but we wanted to try something different so we booked at the overlook lodge, which turned out to be a disappointment.

We arrived and were a little confused on where to check in. The Overlook Lodge is right after you turn off the traffic circle. The staff was wonderfully helpful, not just at check in, but also when I had to make a change in the reservation in the weeks prior to our arrival.

The cottages are really neat buildings, a step back in time! They would be great for a group to stay at with the common great room shared by 6 room, for say a wedding, family reunion, or any of the sort. The view from the front porch overlooked Hessian Lake, not sure if that view is still there when the leaves are on the trees.

After we checked in and put our bags in the room, we wanted to get out and walk. Right there at from the cottage are a number of options for walking or hiking, from easy to rugged. We chose to walk around the lake, then walk around the grounds of the park. There is a ice skating rink, merry go round, the lodge, a zoo, a museum, boat rentals, and a picnic area. It began snowing and with in a half hour, there was close to an inch of snow and it continued till early the next morning, though with some rain, when it was close to midnight.

We were initially thinking we would go out to eat, but due to the snow and that we had food with us, we decided to eat in the cottage. We were the only people staying in the cottage and it was all ours. We built a big fire in the HUGE stone fireplace, there was firewood on the porch and in the fire place, not sure if that is always provided or if that was left by a prior guest. While we sat by the fire we played board games and talked. Pretty nice evening while the snow fell.

The only problem we had was the heat, could not find a thermostat in the room, only in the great room. We are used to cooler rooms when we sleep, so it was not a big deal, may be for others though.
