“Tough hike”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 March 2012

I have done a bunch of the "high peaks" in the ADK. Blue mountain is not considered one of them, but I have to say that the difficulty level of this one surpases most of the high peaks I have done.
The path is unusual, and is more like a dried up stream bed. Very rocky, and slippery in spots. It gives the trail charecter, and you definately wont be bored on your treck.
The view at the top was not too bad. Like someone else already mentioned, you can get a better or equal view from an easier hike. I wouldnt hike this mountain just for the view, thats certain, and the fire tower at the top is not the safest feeling structure in the world.
The hike is challenging, but fun, with an average view. Careful on your way back down, those smooth rock surfaces can be tricky!

“Good hike, expansive but average view”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 September 2010

If you like to sweat hiking, this mountain is for you. The view from the top of the fire tower is expansive. And this is all I can say. There is no special beauty. It is average view that you can get from the top of the much lower hill. (This is my opinion. May be because it was cloudy, gray day.) Anyway don’t go for the view, much easier walk (Castle Rock) in this area will reward you with beautiful views of Blue Mountain Lake and its ilands. Also try Chimney Mtn., around 12 miles from Indian Lake city. (I believe take road 4 south off road 28 past the city)
Back to Blue Mountain. The hike itself is wonderful. (Was at the end of August. No flies) Start early when it is not too hot. Trail begins in the forest with tall trees. Jump from one boulder to another or walk through the maze of tree roots. The farther you go the steeper ascend is. Close to the top notice that the trees shorten 2-3 times. Most of the second part of the trail is polished rock with moderate grade. When you notice small clearing on the left and can see partially abstracted by tries valley, you are almost there. May take a picture. (On the way back you may not want to stop.) You will need to go up the fire tower to get some view.
It took around 1hr. 40 min to get to the top with 7 year old. Way back was 30 min less.

Good book describing the Adirondack region trails and directions is:
“Longstreet Highroad Guide to the New York Adirondacks” by Phil Brown. The composition of the book is a little confusing (need to know the region names), but at he end of the trip got accustomed to it.
Also “Adirondack Great Walks & Day Hikes” is good help. You can download it from VisitAdirondacks.com website (http://visitadirondacks.com/brochure-request.html?) or get hard copy in the city's information centers.

“Great view for a little work”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 June 2003

Though I don't know what the total ascent is, it wasn't an easy hike (Cascade Mountain (4000+ ft) during the winter was easier, believe it or not).

View was as good as Cascade, and it was a very beautiful day. Black flies owned the summit, so don't plan on staying up there too long. I took photos from the fire tower, got some gatorade in my gut, and heading right back down. The bugs were really that bad. One lady on her way down mumbled something to the effect: "They're eating Deet for dinner up there." She wasn't lying. Probably a hike I'd like to do on a warm spring day (no bugs), as most of the trail is rock face and (I heard) clear during the late winter/spring.
