For our first family vacation to the Big Apple - 2 adult, 17 year old son and 15 year old daughter - weren't sure where to stay and the relative value of the property. So we picked a hotel at the end of the D line.
The hotel is very new - when I checked the hotel out the Google street view showed the hotel being built. It's very clean. The fixtures are modern and nice. The shower has a tall shower head (very important). The flat screen TV was big and okay. It was relatively quiet. Well, we didn't hear the neighborhood but there was one day with noisy guests.
Room size - um, let's say compact and efficient. Small refrigerator and a small closet. Okay sized bathroom. Not a lot of room for suitcases but we made it work. We didn't come to NYC to hang out in a hotel room.
Parking - there is free parking on the "lot" but it's for only 5 or 6 cars. The last night we were there we were able to park in the lot. There was plenty of free on street parking. Depending on what days you're there, the car may have to be moved because of the street sweepers.
Subway - we didn't take the bus. The D line stop was more than a 10 minute walk. It would take us at least an hour to get to Grand Central Station. There's another train stop closer, but that's the regional line and is supposed to be more expensive.
Breakfast - Eh. It was okay. Go find a local place for some bagels.
Neighborhood - It was fine. I'm from the suburbs in the midwest and it was not what I was used to. But that's why we travel, right? People who haven't been to New York in a while thought we were nuts to stay in the Bronx. It was fine. Everyone was very nice. And really good, cheap, pizza near by.
Fitness - I didn't work out. My kids weren't impressed. Only a couple of machines and it was very warm in there. The machines are apparently in very good shape. They were brand new.
Would I stay here again? That would depend on what I was doing. If the reason I was in town was close to this part of the Bronx, absolutely. To be a tourist in Manhattan or Brooklyn? No. Too much time on the subway.
