Awesome hotel! Very nice and very clean! Subway is right down the street, was traveling alone and never really felt unsafe in the neighborhood. Great Mexican food restaurant right next door! Fantastic deal! Would definitely stay here again!

Working hard to find a decent/good hotel in NY. Anything in Manhattan was looking as "do not touch" either quite expensive, and I did not see the reason (excepting the location, in few cases I understood even from my travel agent the quality is modest due to location) or other not "so appealing" choices. This is 1.5 minutes from subway station, it takes about 20 minutes to reach Grand Central Station (five walking minutes for Times Square). Brand new hotel, excellent value for price, friendly staff, perfect breakfast and all time coffee/tea. It will be my hotel for next NY trip.

As many other reviewers have noted, the Opera House Hotel is a fine hotel with large rooms and friendly and helpful staff in a sub-optimal location. I had a fine stay there.
I’ve visited NYC once or twice per year every year for the past 15. My recent (early November) visit was the first time I’ve stayed outside Manhattan. Here are my thoughts about the location of the OHH:

• Nothing in the immediate neighborhood would entice a visitor to this area.
• A previous reviewer characterized the area as “filthy” and an OHH rep demurred. On several days during my recent visit it was in fact filthy. Piles of litter were inexplicably scattered in the middle of the sidewalk. I’m not referring to the stacks of bagged trash waiting to be picked up that are so common in NYC. I’m referring to heaps that look like trash bags were emptied in the middle of the sidewalk. There might be 3-5 between the hotel and the 149th/3rd metro station. Have no idea what caused this.
• Yes, you can get from that station to Lincoln Center or the Metropolitan Museum in 20 minutes on a typical day. That does not include walking to the metro stop; waiting for the train; and walking from the train to your destination. Figure 45 minutes (each way) minimum. That makes a late-afternoon return to the hotel to rest and get ready for the evening something of an undertaking.
• Both the 2 and the 5 lines are generally packed at 149th/3rd. I stood the entire trip at least 2/3 of the time. One afternoon returning from the area of 86th and Lexington I had to wait for the 3rd train to be able to board.

So, in my view, the decision to stay at the OHH is a decision between value (excellent!) vs. convenience and access (poor). With prices 50%-60% below Manhattan (early November), there will undoubtedly be varying points of view about this trade-off. One thing I would not worry about, however, is the OHH raising prices significantly. To do so would eliminate an important competitive edge.

Excellent new boutique hotel that just opened in August. Very clean, large rooms and well decorated. Great range of channels and free wifi. The staff were fantastic and very helpful. Breakfast was as expected.

Make no mistake though, the Bronx is not the nicest place. I only came here due to business and would not walk really recommend walking around the area for sightseeing. If your taking taxis everywhere, then this place is more than fine. Fantastic value for the price and there really isn't anything else in the area that can even come close. I would happily stay there again.

Bronx may not be Times Square, but thanks for that. Not once in a whole week we felt offended, insecure or anything like it.

The staff at Opera House played a big role in that part. Friendly, service minded, positive...Really a pleasure everytime you left or came back. The hotel it self is exceptionally clean. Rooms very nice with good bath room and a fully equipped TV-package.

Breakfast at the mezzanine is really nice and simple. Coffee, juice, bagels, toast, yogurt, pastries...only thing missing was a variaty of fresh fruit, but you could go to a grocery 3 minutes away if you really craved it.

Public transport running 100 meters from the hotel with direct line to Central Manhattan. Would not think a second if I was thinking of going back. Exceptionally good value.
