The Kaaterskill has all the best parts of a bed & breakfast: beautiful scenery, peace and quiet, romance, without any of the worst parts like making small talk with the inn-keeper or seeing anyone else at all. You can easily go to the Kaaterskill and not see or speak to a stranger the whole time you're there! That said, if you ever need anything, the on-site manager will be there to assist you-you just have to call them up. Peace and privacy abound!

Room Tip: All the rooms are excellent and similar. The rooms on the second floor provide more privacy, as no o...

We came with four small kids and just had an amazing experience! The views were just breathtaking, the cute farm animals were so much fun to pet. The service was great. We also enjoyed the hot tubs! The hotel made our vacation since the area is pretty quiet during the winter time. Would definitely come back!

The setting of the Kaaterskill is quite remarkable: you see nothing from your room except farm animals, a pond, fields, woods and a gorgeous view of the Catskill Mountains. It is truly lovely. We stayed for 2 nights during foliage season and had a wonderful time just looking out the large slider windows, watching hawks flying, seeing the bunnies hopping around, the horses and donkeys walking in the pasture. We took the walk around the grounds - about 1 mile along the pastures and by a brook - very nice. The room was very large, with a fireplace, lounge chairs, couch, huge bathroom with wood paneling & high ceiling, jacuzzi & separate shower, CD & IPod players, flat screen TV, small fridge & microwave. We were on the 2nd floor which has a balcony for each room but the balcony furniture had been folded up. The Inn is about 10 minutes from downtown Catskill which has several restaurant choices.

Note that the Kaaterskill is a self-service inn. The caretaker happen to be there when we arrived so he showed us to our room but you otherwise check yourself in and you are on your own. There is no housekeeping, no breakfast. (The caretaker lives on site but isn't always there, but accessible by phone.) The room is stocked with a coffee pot & coffee (although we ran out, as the small container wasn't full when we arrived), tea, hot chocolate, granola bars & oatmeal. There is a microwave & small fridge so you can bring your own food and there are plates, silverware, cups, glasses for 2. If you like your bed made up, you do it yourself. The lack of service is not too big of a deal as long as you know up front. Also, a TA reviewer noted outrage that was no soap in the bathroom: he is correct in that there are no soap bars. The kitchenette & bathroom have soft soap pumps & body wash & shampoo. It seems a bit odd but if you need bar soap, bring your own. And, there was no ice to be found when we were there. We were the only guests both nights but foliage season doesn't seem to be off-season.

The set up at the Kaaterskill was different for us but not a big deal and the room and especially the setting make it a very special place.

Room Tip: Upper level rooms seem more private.

We did not want to go out!!!
The accommodations and the service was beyond fantastic. The place inspired not only peace but your senses. The art work, the details are exquisite. We literally did not want to go anywhere else. The class and elegance are impressive. Each room has character! a fireplace and candles adorned the ledge of the jacuzzi tub as well as the nightstand and table out on the balcony. Just the place to be !!! We will be back for my son's wedding and I am planning a very special weekend with very special friends. I

My husband and I got married upstate a week ago, and we decided to have our wedding party stay at the Kaaterskill. We were thrilled with the accommodations and the service.
The setting is beautiful, and very peaceful- out every window you have a view of the pond and hills in the distance. When you open your sliding door, you can hear ducks quacking by the pond and a rooster crowing in the distance- it's a total country experience. The rooms are fairly simple, but each one has a working fireplace, flat screen tv, kitchenette, and large jacuzzi tub. We loved going back each night to relax with a bottle of wine.

If you decide to rent out the entire inn, there is a large kitchen and tv room that you will gain access to upstairs. It has a very cool "old school" rustic lodge feel to it-- bear skins on the floor, a pool table, and lots of random knick knacks that give the place character. Our family often stayed up late playing pool and hanging out in that room together.

Management is very friendly and accommodating. They were quick to answer all of my inquiries when I made the booking, and worked closely with me all year to make sure my guests were all able to book their rooms appropriately. Two of my guests traveled with small children, and the staff kindly set up playpens in their rooms prior to them arriving. During our stay, management contacted me twice to make sure I was happy and to see if there was anything more we needed.

It is important to note that the Kaaterskill is not a bed & breakfast- they do not service meals at this inn. However, the kitchenette allows you to make/keep your own food in the room, and there is a cute farmer's market down the road. Also, the staff does not come in to do housekeeping during your stay unless you request it ahead of time or are staying for more than three nights. However, we didn't mind any of this. We liked the privacy, and appreciated that the inn isn't wasteful. Also, we knew that if we needed anything we could ask the staff members who were always nearby.

Overall, we were very satisfied with our stay at the Kaaterskill! We look forward to returning this winter.

Room Tip: Our favorite room is the Church!

I booked a suite at the Kaaterskill literally a little over a week before New Year's Eve weekend. I knew that my boyfriend and I wanted to go to the Catskills and our choices would be limited We were fortunate enough to grab the last available suite at The Kaaterskill.

This place was everything I thought it would be and more. As some of the previous reviews suggest, this Inn is basically a "self check-in". Kurt, one of the caretakers, did greet us upon arrival and led us up to our room but you may not necessarily experience that if they are not around. Read: If you need to be coddled in typical B&B style, this is not the place for you.

The Julia Hart-Beers room on the 2nd level at the end was great. Eclectically appointed with diffferent artistic themes apparent in the art and furniture, all designed to give it a whimsical and 'zen like' feeling. Every one of the 6 suites has a fireplace, etc. with ample seating throughout in addition to the queen size bed. Every room has a balcony with gorgeous views of the pond, farm and Catskill Mountains.

Besides the beauty of the room and the property itself, what impressed me were the little extras. There was a bottle of wine in the room wrapped with a welcome for the holidays, shampoo and toiletries, 2 bottles of water, ample towels and blankets, wood for the fireplace and lovely hard cover books to read at your leisure. Candles adorned the ledge of the jacuzzi tub as well as the nightstand and table out on the balcony. The only thing that was a tad strange was that there were clothes in some of the dresser drawers as well as jackets hanging in the closet area (perhaps they were for us to use in case we needed something?).

The common space downstairs is lovely and peaceful and a bowl of fresh fruit welcomes you each morning. Because the grounds were muddy, the Inn supplied several sized pairs of rubber boots for guests to use if they so desired. What a thoughtful idea! We enjoyed walking the trails and feeding the horses and goats and sheep (Apple, the pig, was off celebrating New Year's with the owners so unfortunately, we didn't get to meet him).

Restaurants and shopping are all within a 15 minute drive of The Kaaterskill in neighboring towns of Saugerties, Tannersville and Woodstock (skip Hunter proper unless you are visiting Hunter Mountain; otherwise, there is not much to choose from in this area).

I would highly recommend The Kaaterskill for anybody who is looking for a peaceful getaway close to NYC (an hour and a half from where we live in NJ).

Room Tip: Some of the rooms have double beds, some queen, some king. Make sure that you choose one based on y...

I read about The Kaaterskill in Travel and Leisure a few years ago and tore out the page for my "travel to someday"file. Finally went for an anniversary weekend in November and it was fantastic. Rustic, yet just luxe enough. A room with a wood burning fireplace at a cozy secluded inn that allows dogs is my dream. We read the reviews before we went so we were prepared with wine, beer, smoked salmon, lobster salad, cheese, crackers and a BIG steak for the grill. We did head into town the first day to check it out, but preferred to stay on the property and hike up the creek, fish in the pond. The owners were there, but left us alone. When we arrived someone did come out and greet us and showed us to the room, although we were prepared to figure it out on our own. Once I locked myself out of the room, but used the house phone in the main room and the caretaker came right over to let us in. Bottom line-this is like having your own little country cabin for the weekend without the hassle of a house payment and upkeep. Most cabins don't have such comfy beds or big jacuzzi tubs though so this was a treat. We will be back...often I hope.
