How many places can you stay where there's a piano playing as you enter the cozy front area, old fashion, white linen curtains nestle along the round windows, and dinner awaits you in the meet-everyone dinning room.
The Spencer is a hotel we can all cherish, as their are so few places that can match it.
Besides, Chautauqua is such a remarkable and wonderful place it be.

This place looks a lot nicer on the in outside than on the inside. Our room was filthy-- the kind of dirt that you can't clean: it is so ground in from years of neglect and surface cleaning. For the price it was extremely disappointing.

We are so sorry to see the most current posting (which appears to be from a visit last summer..)
Please scroll further down to the July 9th posting, which we think is a more accurate and timely reflection of our attention to detail and cleanliness. We are indeed making note of every customer concern and applying ourselves diligently to each and every one - just ask anyone who has joined us for dinner this week. Thank you for your attention to this posting and our hope you will call us to validate our improvement efforts.

We were coming to see a concert at the Institution we decided that we would like to get a massage that morning. I remembered seeing that the Spencer had a spa calling I spoke to Brian he fit us in and I mentioned how we wanted to stay there some time. This was during the season and all places book by the week, but Brian said he had an opening and we took it. It was on the fourth floor " The Sheakspear room" all rooms are themed well for a certain writer. we loved the 4th floor porch we sat on the porch and enjoyed the symphony at the pavilion across the street, it was a lovely evening . The hotel was spotless and no smell of "old" everything was wonderful including the Iced tea in the lobby and the complementary breakfast. All employees, manager, and owners treated us like we were old friends. We enjoyed how the owner told us about how he was from our area and how he got involved in the business and its history . And yes the massage was first rate Abbie was really a great professional . Oh yes my wife had to finish some work and they have high speed internet you will love its password. All in all we will look forward to returning, and with each summer evening longing to be on that 4th floor porch again.

Room Tip: The higher the the floor the better!!!!

My husband and I were married in Chautauqua last October. When planning our stay I booked several nights at the condo/hotel that we usually use at the Institution but they were totally booked for the night before and night of our wedding. I began searching the internet for a second place to stay and was really excited to find what looked like an upscale, romantic bed and breakfast. I thought that because the price was quite a bit more than our usual place that the Spencer would be a perfect treat for our two special nights. Unfortunately, I was wrong. Our room was quite small (not a big deal) but really uncomfortable because of windows that we could not open. It was not clean, the carpet was stained and the room was too warm and musty. The bathroom was tiny and the vent fell out of the wall onto the floor. Breakfast was a tepid, grey quiche of some kind. When I made the reservation the woman told me that she would give us the special honeymoon treatment with rose petals in our room etc. It never happened, but it may have been just as well. I was so dissapointed with our stay and felt so ripped off that I was happy to turn my attention to our family and friends and other plans rather than spend my time trying to negotiate with the hotel staff. I can't recommend the Spencer to anyone.

My teenage daughter and I needed a getaway weekend and this was just the place. We stayed during the off-season winter months and it was clean, quiet and relaxing. It is an older building (but very well done) so if you are a "chain hotel" sort of person then this might not be for you. However, if you are a bed and breakfast fan like myself (with a few extra amenities) who appreciates a warm atmosphere and times past then you will love this hotel!

We received hot stone massages right in the hotel spa and they were VERY well done. The owners and staff are helpful and friendly and went out of their way to make sure we enjoyed our stay. We wanted a certain room but we were torn because that particular one didn't have a whirlpool tub and they actually suggested we use the whirlpool in the empty room across the hall! You don't see that often! The room was smaller than we expected so I will probably spring for a larger one next time but there will definately be a next time!

I just wish we had more time here , I can't say enought about the staff, they will take care of all your needs, The room was good, the bathroom was clean, you have to wait a few minutes if you are in the shower on the fourth floor, fot the hot water to reach you, but you would in any hotel. We enjoyed our stay, and would go back again.

There are better alternatives in the area and the Institute is such a rip on pricing that this is only another example of the problem. Who would of thought a bunch of liberals would become capitalists overnight!! The spa is a joke....it doesn't warrant having the name attached to the hotel. Its noisy and you can hear the other rooms, so romance is tempered! Theme is loosely developed. I suggest elsewhere.

Our spa offers many options such as facials, manicures, pedicures, at least 3 different types of massages (individual or couples), a sauna, and calming music amongst other things. It is also an uncommon feature in many places around this area so comparitively we are actually quite ahead of the game. As to your thoughts that the "Theme is loosely developed", we have 24 different rooms and each and every single one of them is completely different. Each room is dedicated to a specific author and the decor (from the carpet and bed colors to the wall murals, bathrooms, closets, dressers and/or wardrobes, lamps, books and music compilations) is individually centered around that author. We also have short descriptions of each author outside of the rooms. Our apologies if you didn't feel it was specific enough
