“Great Hotel for the Chautauqua Experience !”
Reviewed 20 July 2013

We have been to Chautauqua before, but this is the first time we stayed at the Spencer. Chris, the General Manager and his staff, are really devoted to serving the customer. Chris is a problem solver. He works to accommodate individual needs and requirements. We understand that there are only two hotel style places that serve meals within the Chautauqua grounds. The Spencer is one of them. They do a very good job efficiently serving a very good breakfast and dinner so that you can be on time for the busy summer Chautauqua schedule. Their location is central and very convenient to everything. You can even sit on their deck and listen to the music from the AMP in the evening. The entire hotel is air conditioned (common areas and rooms) which is critical for the summer. The rooms are quiet and clean. We had three people in #407 with one and half baths. This worked very well. There was a bathtub with hand held shower which was initially a challenge, but improved as you developed the technique. However, some of the rooms have regular walk in showers if you are not comfortable with this. They have TVs so you can keep up on the news and the weather. We plan to return to the Spencer next year.

It is most gratifying when first time visitors to the Spencer and Chautauqua Institution have a truly enjoyable experience. We dedicated ourselves to making our guest stays as full and satisfying as possible and the reviewers kind comments are greatly appreciated.

The value for the hotel was great. The food was outstanding especially the chicken dishes. Had TVs in the rooms which was nice. Had a nice kitchen fully stocked for us to use with a microwave. Nice wine selection as well for dinner. Chris the hotel manager was extremely helpful and accommodating. It could not have been a better week.

This season we offered breakfasts every morning and dinners Monday through Friday. Our guests seem to appreciate the convenience of being able to start there day off right at the hotel and then have a pleasant repast at dinner after a full day of Chautauqua programming. We time the evening meal to enable guests to attend evening programs at the Amphitheater, the Bratton Theater and other events at the many venues afforded by Chautauqua. The guest comments are much appreciated..

As a life long Chautauquan, I normally stay at the family house which was overloaded this trip. Staying here was a great alternative. I was a late arrival which was easily accommodated. And as an early riser, I was very appreciative of the hot coffee which was ready by 6:30 am in the dining room.High level courtesy and professional staffing was enjoyed plus the dining was unexpectedly distinctively done.

The Brownings (406) suite is well appointed and near the leisurely 4th floor porch where I listened to the evening's concert while sipping a beverage. Be ready for the snug bathroom which is why the rating is a 4.

Chris, the general manager, was exceptional.

Coming from a long time Chautauquan, we are most pleased to read the reviewers comments. Chautauqua is a unique place and the Spencer is special kind of hotel where tradition, high quality service and modern convenience e.g. central air conditioning, internet access, cable television come together to make guest stays fulfilling. We look forward to welcoming the guest back soon.

What a delightful find! Chris, the General Manager, and his entire staff helped make my stay extra special and memorable. Their attention to details was very impressive. My room (The Brownings, #407) was quite lovely, most comfortable, and peacefully quiet. The location was perfect. The meals were delicious - meticulously prepared and served. I've already reserved my "retreat" at The Spencer Hotel for 2014.

We are delighted the guest found us to be an "oasis" for relaxing and enjoying the wonderful experience of being at Chautauqua Institution. Our proximity to the Amphiteater at Chautauqua make the Spencer and ideal location. The guest comments about our customer service are most appreciated. We look forward to welcoming them back next season. Also don't forget we are open throughout the year for a weekend getaway retreat.

We found this to be the perfect place to enjoy our stay at Chautauqua. Our room (406) was clean and comfortable with access to a long balcony with comfortable outdoor seating to watch the world go by! Every effort is made to ensure all our needs were met. We loved it so much that we have booked for next year. Chris, Helen and the young service people were terrific. Everyone is on a first name basis right away which made us feel ever so welome. We were especially impressed with the friendliness of all the guests which was created by the almosphere of the Spencer Hotel.
We are looking forward to our stay next year.

Room Tip: Top floor, all rooms. No noise from people on top of you.

After our 2 1/2 hour drive from Pittsburgh to The Chautauqua Institute, we were welcomed by Chris, The General Manager, who was sitting on the front porch waiting for us. Once our luggage was taken to our room, we were invited into the pretty Dining Room for coffee and a delicious oatmeal souffle. The food is organic and superb.

The interior of this 112 year old building is eclectic; featuring vintage furniture, original watercolors and a perfectly behaved little mascot named Hannah the dog. The building features many balconies. But, we seemed to like the front porch and it's 8 rocking chairs. we particularly liked the Dining Room for Backgammon. While playing, we were served a great bottle of Malbec and an aged cheese platter which was pre-arranged. The afternoon was most delightful followed by the most wonderful 1 1/2 hour massage each by Ducko, our professional masseuse. I felt like a wet noodle! Dedicated massage room is hand painted with soft music and candles.

Our room was a surprise. The walls featured a hand painted African theme with a hand painted tent over the bed. Very nicely done. There was also a kitchenette w/ small stove and refrigerator. We wake early and made 5:00 A.M. Coffee with the coffee filters which we brought from home and a pot of hot water. The two person spa is deep and has a hand held shower devise. Bring your own votive candles for a little atmosphere. We slept well in the queen size bed. Storage and seating were ample. Each room is dedicated to an author. Our author wrote "Out of Africa". Finished pine floors and throw rugs complete the decor.

While the weather was foggy, windy and cold the first day, we found The Spencer Hotel to be welcoming, warm and inspiring. The guests were mostly our age; late 40's-late 50's and very friendly. The second breakfast was an organic fruit cup and a freshly prepared cheese and veggie strata. Delicious. While there was a parlor, I found the Dining Room to be the most comfortable to play backgammon and needlepoint because the quality of light was good. Wi-Fi throughout as well. Chris, The General Manager was most helpful in guiding us to local attractions and making dinner arrangements. Helen, our Hostess was a quiet, lovely person.

This is a facility for artists and writers. Also a great spot for a romantic get away or folks that need some relaxation. I particularly enjoyed the creative atmosphere. A daily high tea with tea sandwiches, scones and sweets is planned for the future and could possibly be pre-arranged now. Conveniently located one short block from The Ampitheater, The Spencer Hotel proved to be the perfect spot for a well deserved rest and interesting conversations. Thank you for your wonderful hospitality........Minta Roberts Brown, Sewickley, Pa.

Room Tip: Pre-arrange for special services, such as; wine and cheese platters, high tea and massages. Our suit...

The gracious and most hospitable staff are there to greet you. They go far above any other hotel where we have been to make sure your stay is the best.

The Spencer is a beautiful, Victorian hotel where each room is creatively decorated to exhibit the setting of a classic, literary work which honors the genius of its' author.

The service is FANTASTIC, and very personable. The staff takes the time to know the individual's preference in accommodating
details.

As the excellent, and personable service places The Spencer over other hotels; the delicious and gourmet breakfasts orbits beyond the typical Bread and Breakfast accommodations.
